ES-Razzi Tutorials: Using the Search Bar

This tutorial is a direct response to this post.

Apparently some people are having trouble using the updated search bar, so I will share some techniques you can use to improve your searches.

1) Thank you xxXPsychoFadeXxx posting this tip! Use the formats below to make your search results more specific.

User’s profile

What you type: {user’s name} profile on Kongregate

Game

What you type: Part of the game/the whole game name

Forum

What you type: {thread’s name} discussion on Kongregate.

2) If you are looking for a game, type the name or part of the name into the search bar. Wait 5 seconds. A drop down menu of games should be visible. Select the game you are looking for. It will take you directly to the game page when you click on an option.

EDIT: When you posted the link to this tutorial in the directory it messed up the whole look. This happened to me with the Multiplayer games thread. I think it has some thing to do with the new forum URL’s. But I would be wrong.

Nice tutorial, I think you should add these couple of tips that you can find on the page that appears when your search doesn’t yield any results:

Use “*” if you’re unsure about part of what you’re searching for, such as a suffix (i.e., “hovercraft*” will show any game that begins with “hovercraft,” even if it ends with something really weird, like a “y”).

Make sure your search isn’t overly strict. For example, multiple words in quotes will only show results with that exact phrase. Using AND between terms will require potential results to include both terms, and “-” will exclude anything immediately after the minus sign.

Is it really that necessary to put “Discussion on Kongregate” and “Profile on Kongregate”?

How about writing “Kongregate” You can’t fidn his profile unless you use the “profile on kongregate” tool.

This tutorial isn’t just for finding things. It is supposed to show you how to narrow your search results to be as specific and exact as possible.

I just tried the star thing, and it really wasnt effective. I could be doing it wrong, but I got a lot of misc. trash.

Let’s be serious, ruudiluca. This tutorial was created because some people were having difficulties with the search bar. At least understand that some people need help; you’re not helping anyone in that way.

I’m glad someone else realises the ridiculousness of this. It shouldn’t be possible for a search bar to be this difficult, but Kongregate have made one so bad we now have a series of video tutorials just for using it.

It’s actually users’ fault. If the new users actually spent a few minutes in finding out how the search bar works, and learn some tricks of their own, all these complicated tutorials wouldn’t exist.
