If you have an English layout. Other languages have them in other places where you need to use AltGr to reach them. Not sure where these are on mobile keyboards.

Hey, I’m going to respond to a couple of points here, and add some additional information to help give context.
Basically, we’re doing this to make it easier for **new people** to get involved in forums. You all have (correctly) said for years that our forums were hard to use and required a lot of inside knowledge, and wanted more accessible forum tools. I have always agreed that those were valuable and worthwhile goals.
I know that you-all are very familiar with the world of /1 and other similar forums, but the reality is that the majority of posts on Kongregate are made in the gaming forums. I’m not going to disclose the actual numbers, but here’s what the graph looks like:

Maybe some of those forum users will eventually wander over into some non-gaming forums, maybe not, but these improvements are going to be a real benefit to new people.
I realize that for folks who are hardcore forum users, you’re going to see some reductions in functionality. At the same time, there are going to be real benefits (like previews) that I believe will outweigh the losses (like superscript and subscript).
* * *
**Why this one?**
This option was chosen because it
- is easier to use than our current system
- can be integrated into complicated and unique ways that Kongregate uses forums, and
- would not turn all past forum posts into gibberish.
What with our guild forums API, and the various permissions involved in those and with forum modships, our forums are not nearly as simple as they appear on the surface. Also, it was very important to retain the legacy posts in legible form (aka, not reduced to gibberish). This really was the best viable option; “throw the whole thing out and rewrite it from scratch” is, sadly, not one of the options available to us.

Double-posting because I don’t want to distract from the serious discussion in the last post. Regarding the gif, I’ll point out (maybe you haven’t noticed) we don’t take a particularly formal tone in our forum posts. “Sweet baby Jesus” is a common expression of amazement, as if one has beheld **an unexpected miracle**. The expression was used reverently in Talladega Nights:

There’s also chocolate-peanut butter porter ( _shudder_ ) with that name.

While our usage was not particularly reverent, neither is it disrespectful— just silly.

Again, going to re-iterate that this particular issues doesn’t bother me. But, this really isn’t for you to decide. :/

Awesome post, Tricky. It’s cool seeing the stats, I hadn’t realised there was such a huge difference between the activity in gaming and non-gaming forums.

I kinda question this when you need to actually type more characters to do some really basic things, e.g. bolding and linking, but fine, I guess?
Also, nice to see stats.

Lest we forget, the chart in tricky’s post is _not_ layered (otherwise the “other forum” data slice would look purple, a mix of red and blue), so that diagram might confuse people into thinking game forums actually contain 2-3 times as many posts as other forums, while in reality they have comparable amounts of posts

Was it the quote “Sweet baby Jesus” that offended people though? I assumed it was pouring syrup on the religious figure that may have riled people up since it’s possibly a bit blasphemous to some people.

Not surprised tbh. The really popular multiplayer and idle games alone gains A LOOOOOT of people and knowing there is forum dedicated to the game they are playing they are going to post in it. The other forums (us) are there but we aren’t shown off to thousands of people easily. You don’t see a giant “JOIN THE OFF TOPIC FORUM NOW!” banner on the front page or anything.
Anyways tl;dr version of this thread is we asked for it, and enjoy your post preview button.

Is there going to be an option that lets us know who made any thread without clicking on it? That would be useful.

…It wasn’t mentioned, so… no. Also, it’s a completely unrelated feature.

It’s kind of funny that this is sparking such emotions. It has been a given since a few years that the kong forums are vastly inferior in terms of user functionality to just about any other on line forum out there, in fact, it’s inferior to most on line forum software from even a decade ago.
Yes, that’s right, forum software that was used a decade ago was superior in user functionality compared to what kong is offering right now, I’m not even comparing it to what those other packages have improved over the past 10 years, because if we did that, some poor guy at kong HQ might get embarrased and we wouldn’t want that. Most of the things they implemented a decade ago were ok-ish for the time, a decade later however…
Now, to tackle this, the powers that be have decided to ‘update’ it in such a way that user functionality is either kept the same or decreased some more (depending on which angle you’re looking from). So, simply don’t expect any useful changes, if that was going to happen it would have happened ages ago. Save yourself some grief. Complain all you like, just don’t expect any serious changes (token efforts not included). Take what’s being offered and learn to live with it and/or move on to other plains, because, you know, sometimes the grass actually is greener on the other side of the hill (depending on what kind of grass you’re looking for). ^^

That’s not what I was complaining about. I was complaining since pouring syrup all over a statue is rather offensive to religiously minded people.

And we're back!
As I assume you all noticed, the rake task took about twice as long as we expected. For some (yet unknown) reason, the process ran much more slowly on the main site than it did in our developmer environments; the engineering team will definitely be working on figuring out why that was.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the changes!

What is this font change and why wasn't it announced beforehand
Why is /36 broken (and /7099 and /7100 working)
Why doesn't the community page no longer have things neatly in place
Why does everything look so padded

There are bound to be some delays as things start back up again. /36 is working fine for me; I'm sure you'll see it again soon.

Adding to that, the thread index of /1/ and /2/ doesn't seem to work (still leading to forum downtime), but the threads inside them are accessible via "last post by" or the post pages of other users, and are working fine
