Cursing in chatrooms

Every single chatroom I went to had people cursing every few seconds. I switched to a random chatroom 4 times before I found one with only one person cursing and then a few hours later the spammers made it to that room too. It is a serious problem here. Is there anything that could be done, even just banning anybody who uses certain words automatically?

The chat’s dont have enough mods, i know for a fact that some rooms mods ignore completely, with one or two rare exceptions.

No, that’s not even remotely an option.

Kongretate’s rules on swearing are listed in the Behavior Guidelines and there are a few threads around here discussing the issue and filters.

so what can/is/should be done with these people?

Cursing isn’t a problem. It’s swearing AT people, or endless strings of vulgar jibberish that are problematic. You can certainly curse all over the place and still be and sound mature. Conversely, you can be terribly rude and disrespectful while using polite, formal speaking.

Kong might need a few more mods, but I think that’s up to the mods to decide if they have enough staff to do their job. During the afternoon and evening, I haven’t noticed any difficulties, but I suspect that the odd hours of the day and night are when the trolls come out to play.

The crowd is diverse. Like ‘real life’ (outside the internet anyway) you can’t always enforce an extremely strict language policy, but must find a median that will make the most people happy; unless you’re running a classy restaurant or something. The definition of cursing some have varies from others, so its hard to say what should be done about these people based on a vague report.

As an example we used to have a member here who thought the words ‘sex’ or ‘drugs’ were cursing and tried to get that to stop. She complained the cursing was out of control and wanted something to be done, when in reality she was just being unnecessarily strong about it.

In the cases where it is truly out of control though, if a mod sees it, they can use their judgment and take care of it. Otherwise, you can report the person as an abusive user with the name and time of the incident and the admins may look into it.

Right now the conversation in some of the less moderated chatrooms is at a level that would probably get you kicked out of a McDonald’s.

Thats a lie Chad, McDonalds doesn’t kick people out, they are WAY too classy for that.

chad you just said what arcane said.

To be fair, you can get into a McDonalds without parental permission when you are under 13.

FWIW there’s swearing and then there’s abuse. I don’t really care about swearing per se, but when literally 3/4 of the chat going on in a room is some immature idiot telling people to suck him off with little to no provocation and the resulting argument, something is terribly wrong. And yes I have reported people using that link and the result is that I get an email about it like six hours later and the same person is doing the same thing the very next day.

As to the 13 thing, I’ve seen people get kicked out of hole-in-the-wall casinos for far less than what goes on in kong chat every day.

You are right. However, I wasn’t talking about abuse. Abuse is a different matter and if you check the guidelines link I posted above, you’ll notice it makes a differentiation in that regard. Therefore, under those circumstances the person can be banned.

Swearing and abuse?

… Hmm The line between the two is blurry at times.

Its not that hard to determine most of the time. In fact, read the guidelines; it has a simple explanation.

The home of the moderators: “The Van” room.

Man I kinda wish people would stop calling the van ‘the home of the mods’ because people keep going there and the mods are either afk or just absent and then they get all disappointed.

It’s probably better just to friend a bunch of moderators (or look at http://www.kongregate.com/accounts/modfriend) and whisper whoever’s online if there’s a problem.

Swearing isn’t really a problem. You’re going to have to encounter it eventually.

Let me be clearer. My problem was not really with swearing, but with the whole chatbox filled with one or two word posts like “homo” “fag” “f--ing b-ch”

Which room? Any Mods acually go there?

Flag Post

Oooor you can just mute people who’re being annoying like that.

heres a major tip for you guys, leave feedback on the users, yes it takes almost forever but trust me it really helps.

Step 1: Spot a Kongregate troll or curser
Step 2: Click Feedback in the top right corner
Step 3: Click the down arrow and select Abusive User
Step 4: Write a complaint, make sure to mention the room, abusive users name, time and timezone you are in (so they can check their chat logs)
Step 5: Kong staff completes appropriate action

“Oooor you can just mute people who’re being annoying like that.”

Yeah because it’s so much fun to have half the room on mute and listen to the other half responding to their trolling…

Flag Post

You got that wrong.
1.)Spot a Kongregate Troll.
2.)click feedback in the top right corner
3.)?
4.)PROFIT!

That changes it a bit. If people are that bad, they probably should be muted. Also, follow the instructions given and report them. You may not think that reported them brings help, but you have to be willing to use what’s available. At some point, Kongregate cannot keep up on the problem either, so some of the responsibility is left in your hands at this point.

Also realize that some of the mods you whisper may receive an email on it even if they are not on the site at the time. Users like myself will get that fairly quickly and can sometimes respond. You wont get service in 5 seconds, but that’s the way it goes. Mods are not paid users who must drop their jobs and life immediately if someone who doesn’t want to use the mute requests help; but they are their to take care of things if they are available.

The site is also in beta, so some community features surrounding moderation are not in place yet. Hopefully whatever comes out in time will help the situation. With the internet though, it will never be ideal.
