I’m wondering if server side processing will be available, or will the API just be a means of communicating between clients? If it is available, I guess we’d still need to use java or something similar to get that working specifically for our game. Do you have any info on how that will work yet? |
Server-side processing will be available for the premium games, yes. |
If we still need all the Java stuff i won’t be able to make a premium game. Although i doubt i could anyways. Java got all screwed up on my computer. Updating doesn’t help it either. :( |
You dont need Java running on your computer to make a premium games; unless you intend to develop the server logic for a multiplayer title you want to develop. Java runs on the server and is used to process the multiplayer communication. |
You can also do server-side coding in AS1, though most people seem to find that distasteful. |
cpasley: Do you send a confirmation email when you’ve gotten a pitch? |
It seems as if they have their premium games already announced… |
Paradigm, no we don’t, sorry. I’m also behind on reviewing submissions, but I’ll dive in there soon. Smigbob, the premium games are an ongoing thing. We’re going to continue to greenlight them. |
pasley, what exactly is the money the developers get used for? Is it for them to live off of or is it for them to use for learning and buying development products and such? |
We don’t specify what the money is used for. They budget it out and tell us how much they need to make the game. That may include living expenses (basically hiring yourself full-time) or more bare-bones stuff. It all depends on the game and the developer. |

Alright, Thanks. |
no offense, but ‘Kongai’ as a name sucks. |
I think for the game it suits it well, it kinda has that weird card game name, while it also retains a sense of what the game is about.. “let the mind games begin”.. Breakdown the name Kong ~ Obviously shows Kongregate ai ~ Well this could mean plenty of things.. lets assume the i stands for intelligence, hmm mind games intelligence they go hand in hand. Then the a could mean artificial which wouldn’t work since its all humans, so lets think actual or authentic Kongregate: Authentic Intelligence sounds pretty sweet eh? Kongai works for short. Thats for everyone that doesn’t like the name… sorry for spammin the Premium Games thread. |

This is sounding pretty nice….(well i mean Kongregate has been great so far :)…. except for the fact that i have been a member since the way beginning of Kongregate and i am still eagerly awaiting the Card Game :(…. i really hope that is done soon) I saw an article/Q&A in Gamasutra about the Premium Gaming Funding (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16215) And these games sound pretty good…. but what do you think is the estimated completion of these games? and all of the games will be open to all Kongregate members for free, right? Thanks for a great site so far ;) |
Thanks! All the games should launch in 2008, at different times. All the games will be free to play. |
i’m most looking forward to DinoWars… produced by a fun shop, has really great looking artwork (from what i’ve seen) … just looks to be fun… a dinosaur with an aircraft carrier strapped to it’s back, c’mon people that is awesome! hehe, when does it come out? any staffer want to slip an eta? no supervisors will notice… say it secret code or something… pleeeeeeze. p.s. to the staffers, keep up the good work… you guys are doing something very cool here (not the premium games per se, but Kong as a whole was long overdue… thats for enduring the start-up blues for all of us!! :) ) p.p.s. there better be hella badges for these new games, as hyped as they’ve been… (hear that, ben? ;) ) |
I see more than one platformer MMO in there—I’m curious to see how the different developers approach that. |
They’re actually very different. Completely different approaches to a similar mechanic. It was a concern for me when I picked them, but I’m confident that they’ll be wildly different experiences. |
I’m mainly looking forwards to Remnants of Skystone, mainly because of the co-op. Chris, will you be guys have beta testing on these games? If you do will you guys at Kong pick them out or will the developers get to choose everything about how it goes? |
We will have beta testing, but I don’t know how we’ll handle the criteria yet. Oh, and I’ve played through the prototype of RoS for about a month now. It’s already fun, so I’m looking forward to it too. ;) |
hello I don’t think I’ve met you before? but apparently you know a lot? mind if I ask you who you are? |
I’m Chris Pasley. I’m the Director of Games for Kongregate. I’m in charge of the Premium Games. |
we have a director of games!!! then maybe I should talk you about: http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/4648 sorry hate to just meet you and ask for so much >< P.S how does a game become “premium” |
Phatcat, you can go here to see more about Premium Games: http://www.kongregate.com/pages/premium. Regarding your question there, I’m the wrong person to ask. I just deal with the Premium Games and the card game. |
