You do realize that this thread is over 2 years old… right?

Excellent idea, but to become a mod, I think people should have not had a silence for X amount of days, first.

Or preferably, none at all.

From what I heard it is not as big of a deal if they are user requested silences though as YOU are a mod you would most likely know better then I do on that subject.

I like the idea, but I have a few thoughts which may improve the system. However, Im not sure whether or not they have been thought of, as I have only read the first post.

Firstly, I think that there should be a system to prevent persistent offenders not able to become a user moderator (and henceforth not advance any further up the chain than regular user.) This could be done by (for example) 3 silences or bans within a period of a month would result in blacklisting from the user moderator list, for a month after the third ban or silence was set (provided it was not overturned) and this would encourage people to not offend if they hope to become a moderator of some form in the future.

Alongside this, I believe that some form of “commendation” system, where a similar system to the silencing system suggested would be used, but just for commendations. If someone was helpful in a chatroom, or are consistenly kind, then a vote to add a commendation to thier profile could be initiated by a regular user, or a commendation could be added by moderator of some form. This, alongside going on the profile of the user, would also count as a vote towards the person becoming a user moderator. However, the commendations would only last for a certain period of time. If the commendation was suggested by a regular user, then it would last a month, however, if intiated by a user moderator, two months. This may also scale to the higher ranks. This then means that people who think a certain user would be a good user moderator can show thier support at any time, even if they have not applied yet. As well as this, it would mean that the user might gain confidence in applying to become a user moderator.

My final point, which I think would help the system be implemented, is that in chat the symbols displayed next to the names on the list, such as level bug, developer, moderator, administrator, and zombie / survivor; could also be included next to the name when the user speaks in chat, so that people can clearly see who is applying to become a user moderator etc.

Thank you if you took your time to read this.

Edit: Never realised this thread was so old, sorry for keeping it alive, but its still a brilliant idea and really should be implemented.

I definitely appreciate everyone’s contribution to this topic, but because it’s so old and because we’ve taken such a different direction with how moderation on the site is handled, I’m going to lock it.

I wrote this back when I believed that our current system would need a drastic overhaul to continue functioning. Since then, however, we’ve developed a ton of new tools to make the system far more efficient (such as the moderator nominations system), and we’ve hired on a full-time community team (yes, this thread was created before AlisonClaire or Ducklette were actual employees).

Looking back on some of the ideas I had, they’re so crazy that I’m kind of relieved that we were able to make the current system work without having to take such a huge risk. There’s still a lot of work ahead of us and improvements that can still be made, but they’re going to be focused more around appointing, training, and supervising moderators rather than automatically having an algorithm entrust users with a bit of power without any human oversight.

Sorry to those who liked the idea, and not-so-sorry to those who were salivating at the thought of abusing it, but a special thanks to our community team for helping make the site work without having to risk seeing how something this extreme would have turned out!
