About this thread

Is this an official FAQ?

No, it’s not. It is a non-profit, user-created FAQ made for the general community. That said, this FAQ will probably end up containing lots of information from official sources.

If anything, the unofficial nature of this FAQ gives us more creative control when it comes to the content and information we include in it. I see this project as a collaboration between myself, Kongregate, and the community, so feel free to join in and lend a hand if you’d like to. I look forward to working with you guys and appreciate whatever contribution – no matter how small – you are able to make.

Can I use or quote any information found in this thread outside of the thread itself?

For the moment, yes, so long as you:

   ▪ Abide by the Creative Commons License.
   ▪ Abide by United States fair use laws.
   ▪ Don’t violate United States copyright laws.

If you do not comply with the above, you may not use anything from this thread.

About this thread

How can I contribute?

If you feel you can improve the thread, please feel free to make a contribution by either:

   ▪ Asking a question that hasn’t been asked yet.
   ▪ Adding useful information or resources.
   ▪ Correcting information that you know to be incorrect.
   ▪ Expanding upon or adding more detail to an answer that isn’t as informative as it could be.
   ▪ Giving specific links to information sources (official or not).
   ▪ Adding feedback about the FAQ or suggestions for improvement.

I’ll try my best to add any contributions that contribute something new to the FAQ to the first post in this thread (time allowing). I will also provide credit to anyone who makes a contribution that I end up using.

In the case of multiple contributions that overlap, I’ll use what I feel is most appropriate/best for the FAQ and provide credit to all parties involved.

Do note that I may need to modify the specific wording or formatting of contributions, but I’ll try to remain as true as possible to the original contribution when possible.

If you do not give permission for your contribution to be used or modified when appropriate, please make a note in your reply. I’m pretty reasonable and accomodating, so if you don’t want your work modified and/or used in this thread and linked to in the index, let me know and we’ll sort something out.

I probably won’t give myself credit for any of my work, but I may source specific contributions if I feel doing so would improve the FAQ.

About Kongai (card game)

What criteria is being used to select beta testers?

On Dec 5 2007, Emily_Greer, co-founder of Kongregate.com, said the following:

Since we haven’t chosen any beta testers yet we haven’t had to figure out the criteria.

I don’t know if anything’s changed between then and now, but that hasn’t stopped the community from rapant speculation.

For example, Ninjacow speculates that the criteria is based on how good-looking you are, while AlisonClaire heard it was decided by the number of Y chromosomes a person has. David Sirlin, the designer of the card game, had an alternate theory that if we could look into the mind of John Choi, we’d see a rainbow, a floating panda and a Hello Kitty, but that’s neither here nor there.

On a more serious note, I also joined the speculation bandwagon, and here’s what I had to say:

So far (from what the Kong team have said up till now in this thread), it seems they’re getting a big database of beta test applications, and then they’ll start processing them. This is similar to what people do with job applications. It’s a form of leverage, and it also gives you an idea of what you are working with before you make any decision that will probably take time and resources to make.

I would bet that Kong have ways of sorting the application data (such as by level, by amount of time spent playing games, and other such numbers/values), and they’ll probably induct a few people in based on a criteria, see how that goes, and optimise/tweak as needed (or not… I’m just speculating).

Anyway, that doesn’t leave us with much. I do have some good news, though: If you absolutely must get into the Kongai beta, BenV is accepting bribes via his Paypal account. As for me…

WTB Y chromosome, PST. ;)

I hate doing this, but I’m reserving this post in the event I decide I want to use it or I run into a character limit in the first post. If I don’t use this post, I’ll delete it.

- change code on same page links.

- This thread use for beta test reqs question: http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/4194?...

- Add a change log. Batch up changes per month (only make a post if there are new changes) and post them all together, Guild Wars-style, so people can easily see/know what is updated.

- Add a “this FAQ was last updated on XX/XX/XX” question under general.

- Do something with this question: http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/3965#...

- Maybe create a question about bumping. Already answered below.

- Maybe add a question related to how often this FAQ will be updated. (Mention my time, how often people contribute to it, if it’s used I’m more willing to spend more time on it so if you use it and whatnot that’s a good way for me to update it, etc. Basically just show support for it.)

- Perhaps add a “friends” like or a “credits” link for people who’ve liked to me and shown support. Something like that. I’d like to give credit to all people, regardless of whether they contributed directly or indirectly, although I believe direct contributors deserve special mention. Perhaps make special mention of top contributors and have a set criteria for how they can reach that status (I want to show appreciation, though, not make it a prize to win and strive towards for the sole purpose of status.)

- Add a link to COCAK, repent’s site, and the wiki, as per my other write up I did for Kong.

- list of questions that need answering so contributors can help if they want.

- Add a question for what people can do if I add content or something that people don’t want added (ie. if I add their work/post, etc).

The purpose of this FAQ is to become the definitive, most comprehensive Kongai FAQ available (with good design, navigation, and formatting to boot!). If someone asks about the card game, I want this thread to be the first thing that comes to mind when people post a response, such that no answers need to be given, only a link to this FAQ.

- Do something better then “outdated info” for outdated questions/answers.

- How will I know I have access to the beta?

- What to do about the “people ask a different question to the one I’ve answered, but don’t find the answer to it, even though I’ve answered it, because I used different wording” problem? I could include more questions that link to the same info, but that’s clunky. I could include many questions under the same heading, but also clunky. Hmmm. A “related post” feature using tags would be damn nice. Using tags well, though, would be hard. Hmmm.

http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/6237

- great idea: copy emily’s good commetns from her comments:

http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/6571#...

- Alison’s reply. Also, go through thread and add contributor info to FAQ.

  • Not worth doubling up questions, even if it is efficient. Make a new entry, then link to other entries within that one so that the answer is relevant to the specific question. Also, don’t type out questions so that they pigeon hole into existing answers. Questions don’t always imply that people know what they’re looking for, so you have to cover the “desire” or “need” in the question so that it matches their desire/need. Ie. Improving the “beta cirteria” answer is better then making a new question to fit that info, or creating a “Where can I find the Kongai news page?” question.

- Flesh out Greg’s poker example. Talk about how Kongai has randomness, but it’s there to give more uneven risk/reward and give the game some more depth, even at the sake of being in full control all the time. Also speak about the specific and general skills rewarded: specific = zero, general = timing, yomi (that’s practically it). – This could go under a “what games is Kongai similar to?” answer.

- http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/6548 (fansite links)

- Decks: (maybe some current beta testers here could suggest one?) http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/6573?... – Suggest that players focus on decks that suit them, not “the” decks.

- point level relation http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/6804?...

- http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/6901 (awesome mod list)

- Go through Kongai comments and extract all the questions and answers from them for the blog.

- Figure out what to do with old blog posts that are outdated. Leave them, I guess. Perhaps make a post about it. Everything will be outdated or not-relevant eventually. Perhaps have less content like that? Hmmm. Maybe a “news – subject to change” category, or something.

- http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/8015?... (release date; card unlocking)

- How will Kong handle tournaments? http://www.kongregate.com/forums/1/topics/8156?...

A good question. I don’t have that info (I’m a mere user), but perhaps someone from the Kong staff can give us that info once they come up with a criteria and start selecting people.

At least, now that we have this FAQ thread, we have a nice place where we can centralise all the info related to the card game. Plus, because it’s an unofficial, user-made FAQ, we can cover things that Kongregate usually wouldn’t (thinks like links to external sites, interesting quotes and info, etc).

Hopefully this thread becomes the first thing people think about when they want to either get/share info about the card game.

I hope you get to beta test it bruce.

Thanks, Chitown—I do too. ;)

It’d be good to have you and a few of my other Sanctuary buddies invited as well so we can get into lengthy discussions about Kongai. Alas, no invites for us. =(

Beta access sure would make it much easier to add into to this FAQ, heh. That said, I definitely didn’t make this FAQ to scam my way into the beta (although I won’t refuse an invite if offered! Hehe). A card game FAQ is an idea I’ve had for a while now (I created my first draft for it on October 21st… or so my Microsoft Word file properties say), and I’ve already got a comprehensive write up about Kong/the card game that I posted on another forum, so I thought I’d run with the idea.

The main reasons I made this thread is because (A) I enjoy doing this sort of stuff, (B) the card game interests me, so I don’t mind creating supportive resources, (C) we don’t really have any decent info related to the card game, so this FAQ is definitely filling a need. I also generally like doing things that helps everyone in general in a one-to-many fashion (as opposed to one-to-one, which would be like me sharing this FAQ with one person instead of an entire community).

Right now I’m busy -stealing code- learning from code examples from one of Arcade Coder’s posts so I can spruce up the aesthetics of this thread. Lucky I’ve designed an FAQ layout before (I wasn’t able to use that design, though), so I know exactly how to layout this thread so it works well and looks good. Back to work for me.

How can I contact you?

You can contact me via my contact form (it’s pretty cool; I didn’t know you could make free, remotely hosted contact forms that are so nice).

If necessary, I will reply when I’m able to (assuming you include an email address I can reply to). I welcome any and all feedback, but do please try to keep it reasonable and constructive (or, failing that, amusing). My contact form is a negativity-free zone! ;)

About this thread

Who designed the card game?

David Sirlin of www.sirlin.net. You can read more about Sirlin on the about page of his website.
In terms of Sirlin’s gaming-related experience/achievements, here’s what Capcom Unity has to say:

David Sirlin has competed in Street Fighter tournaments for 16 years, and for 11 years he has helped organize and run the tournament series that started as B3 and has now become the international Evolution Championships. He represented the United States in SSF2T in Japan’s Super Battle Opera tournament, wrote the competitive gaming book Playing to Win, and provided narration for [and was featured in] Bang the Machine, a documentary film about the Street Fighter community. He’s now overseeing the design and gameplay on Super Street Fighter 2: HD Remix.

This unofficial FAQ is completely interesting.

A good question. I don’t have that info (I’m a mere user), but perhaps someone from the Kong staff can give us that info once they come up with a criteria and start selecting people.

This unofficial FAQ is completely interesting.

And still under heavy construction! Heh. I’m not sure whether you were being sarcastic or not (damn text and it’s lack of emotion and tone), but I’ll assume you were being genuine. Thanks for the early feedback – I’m glad to see it’s holding up so early on.

My main goal was to get a solid base, and lucky for me, I designed this (or at least, pre-decided everything) style of FAQ a while ago, so all I had to do was make it relevant to Kongregate and I was good to go. Props go to Arcane Coder for indirectly helping me figure out what HTML I needed to use (I learned most of the code from a FAQ-type thread he created). My HTML usage would probably make a programmer cringe, but if it works, it works. (Yikes… saying what I just did makes me cringe, hehe.)

Anyway, hopefully this FAQ continues to hold up as it expands. This design is supposed to take into account a variety of scenarios, so I’m pretty sure it will. It’s going to be great once it gains a bit more momentum!

About Kongai (card game)

What is being done to bridge the gap between players who have cards and those who don’t?

In this thread, Jabor said:

there will be some sort of “starter pack”, so people can play as soon as they sign up to Kong.

Next up, David Sirlin, designer of the card game, had this to say (source: I blended two comments from his blog and his about page):

[Kongai] has to playable and fun with only a few starter cards.

Even though I’m seen as a hardcore player, I fight more loudly than anyone I know to make things as easy as possible for the poor new player.

So, after taking the above into account, it’s probably safe to assume new players will be reasonably looked after.

A collectible card game like Kongai will never be truly “fair” due to the lack of equal access to the cards (the access may be reasonable, but it’s not equal like it is in a fighting game such as Street Fighter), but good balancing, intelligent design, and player skill go a long way.

About Kongai (card game)

Is there an official Kongai FAQ?

Sort of, but honestly, it isn’t very informative or up to date. Find it here:

http://www.kongregate.com/pages/help#earningcards

If you’re looking for more information from an official source, check out the Kongai ‘cards’ page or the Kongai rulesheet.

I really hope Bruce doesn’t turn into a bratty spammer once he’s a beta tester/the game comes out and that he’s just sucking up to the MAX :x

I’m also wondering if Bruce works/has worked with Sirlin or that he’s just a fan(boy?)...

But anyway, that is all off topic :P

Seems interested. Maybe you should write a… uh… “simpler” version of rules for the game, or a general resumé of it for users who are too lazy to read the “oh so menacing” rules page?

And you should also link to a list of total cards or something for the curious new users, some user’s card list that has all the cards for example.

When is the game coming out? Other than early 2008. Also when will beta testing begin. Will there be a list of those who made it? Soooo many questions.

I really hope Bruce doesn’t turn into a bratty spammer once he’s a beta tester/the game comes out and that he’s just sucking up to the MAX :x

Haha, I’d probably think that about myself too if I could look at what I do objectively. Your mistake is that you’re trying to categorise me with conventional labels. That won’t work so well because I tend to be anything but conventional (I’m not saying that to boast, either; a lot of people would think my lack of conventional-ness is a bad thing). If you want a label, it’s best to go with “Bruce”. That tends to accurately describe me best, I’ve found. =)

Seriously though, the good news is that I’m doing this FAQ because I’m genuinely am interested in helping people, making a meaningful contribution, the card game, and doing things well. Doing things like this happens to fall within my strengths, so I figure I’m a good candidate for a project like this. Plus it gives me something to do while they’re still working on the card game. It’s unfortunate, but most people tend to misinterpret my intentions when I do things, but I’ve learned that it’s part of the territory – all I can do is keep doing my best and let people think what they will.

If you’ve read Sirlin’s book, I fall under the “teacher” archetype, although I see helping others and helping myself (otherwise known as STS and STO) as the same thing (also known as “lightworking” if your familiar with Steve Pavlina’s work), so I don’t tend to succumb to the limitations of the “teacher” archetype. Being a “dominator” for a period of my life taught me the advantages of making sure you take care of yourself. Paradoxically, “helping yourself” is one of the best way to provide value to others.

I’m not sure if I’ll continue maintaining this project for a decent period of time or whether I’ll just get it reasonably fleshed out as a basic FAQ and then leave it as that, but right now the option of “updating it when I can without having it take up all my time” is looking like a good option.

And yeah, don’t worry—I won’t take up spamming anytime soon. I care far too much about my time. Spamming is one of the worst ways to get attention/market/gain popularity/increase visitors to your website, I’ve noticed. If I wanted those things, I’d do something much more intelligent/efficient and something that actually provides value instead of leeching it from society and wasting other people’s time. (I don’t really like spammers. Can you tell? ;) ) Some people would probably like to count my lengthy posts as spam, though. ;) Alas, nobody seems to like giving context to things and lots of detail as much as I do.

I’m also wondering if Bruce works/has worked with Sirlin or that he’s just a fan(boy?)...

I wish I worked/have worked with Sirlin! Heh. No such luck, I’m afraid, although I wouldn’t rule out the possibility. I’m actually supposed to be (unofficially) helping him improve his website, but I’m still gathering ideas on that and mildly procrastinating on doing such a big write up, hehe.

Part of the reason I advocate Sirlin is because I believe the world needs more Sirlin’s to counter balance the non-Sirlin’s. I figure Sirlin could use the support (and for good reason! Just like you tell as many people as you can about a great book you’ve read, I tell as many people as I can about Sirlin), so if it comes across as if I revere him, it’s because I do. What’s amusing is that Sirlin does the same thing with Richard Feynman for the same reasons that I do it to him (ie. Sirlin). =)

Seems interested. Maybe you should write a… uh… “simpler” version of rules for the game, or a general resumé of it for users who are too lazy to read the “oh so menacing” rules page?
I definitely appreciate your suggestion. I’d say it’s a bit “out of the beam” when it comes to my intentions/goals for this project, but I would be interested in doing a Sirlin-style “beginners guide” (you may or may not have read that forum post in Sirlin’s forums; I’d like to take a shot at doing something like that). I may even use some ideas from the way Sirlin does his rulesheets (but I probably shouldn’t elaborate any more about that for Sirlin’s sake).

Mainly though, I want this FAQ to serve as a useful, centralised resource to those who are genuinely looking for information, as well as to those who pepper the forums with nasty (easily answered) questions (providing you put in a little effort) that we could probably do without.

And you should also link to a list of total cards or something for the curious new users, some user’s card list that has all the cards for example.

Yeah, I’ve got that planned. I mentioned in an earlier post that I did a big write up for the card game and posted it elsewhere (ie. not on Kong), so I’ll be taking everything of value that I can extract from that and including it in this FAQ.

Thanks again for the ideas, Hitaro. Keep them coming, guys!

Hey Bruce, I have linked to this thread on KONGCCG here: http://kongccg.blogspot.com/2007/12/kongai-faq…. ….

Wow, cheers Repent! I’m honoured to have my humble FAQ linked to from your blog (I don’t really consider it “my” FAQ, but I am the one doing the write-ups, so meh). I’m actually quite the fan of your blog and I think it’s great if we contributors can work together like this. It benefits everyone, really.

I’ll definitely be linking to your blog when I do some more updating to the FAQ (I’ve already got the draft version of those particular “answers”, they just need to be polished and re-written so they suck less, heh). I hope to link to the Kong Wiki as well, but I’m not sure how that’s going at the moment, so I’ll have to check.

As a side note, if you ever need help on your blog, Repent, feel free to contact me (either through my profile on Kongregate or my contact form) and let me know. I can’t make any guarantees, but I’d at least be interested and will help out if I’m able to.

This needs a BUMP!

Heh, I appreciate the support, Nqkoi1.

There shouldn’t be too much need to bump this thread. Here’s why:

-----------

▪ ArcaneCoder graciously added a link to this FAQ in his General Information thread, which he’s using as a directory of sorts, similar to what I’m doing with this FAQ.
-----------
▪ As Arcane mentioned in this thread (which I may have indirectly encouraged with this FAQ; sorry, Arcane!), the reason the General Information sticky is there is to prevent having many “read this before posting” sticky thread. I think that’s a great, very elegant idea, and I fully support it.

A side effect of having only a comprehensive directory thread is that people tend to miss it because (A) it requires effort to look through (many people are lazy/aren’t reasonable and want things handed to them, I find), and (B) if you’re scanning for something specific it’s easy to miss a general “cover all” thread, but I think it does the job. People who don’t check FAQ threads will still make threads anyway, but most regular forum users will check FAQ threads such as Arcane’s General info thread.
-----------
▪ I should be updating this thread enough to keep it reasonably bumped. Every time I make a new question/answer it will get bumped since a new question/answer means I need to make a new post. This is good, because it will help let people know when the thread is updated, unlike a persistent, stickied thread you have to keep checking to know whether or not it’s updated (like you have to with a website).
-----------

I did make the title of the thread flexible enough so that it would work well if it was stickied, as well as if it just gets bumped when I update it or if it even hangs in limbo if it ever reaches a “finished” state (I don’t think it will, though).

Also, hopefully I can score some more links to this FAQ via word of mouth. That will largely happen without any effort on my part, but it helps if the FAQ is at least good.

I’ve already got a link from Repent’s blog (which is awesome) and a link in the General Info thread I mentioned above, so I’m off to a good start.

My other main goals would be to be linked to from COCAK and maybe even a link from Kong’s unofficial FAQ (they can still have their own FAQ, but I think this FAQ would serve as a nice supplement), but right now I’m focusing on creating content for the FAQ. I might ask if some other sources will link to this FAQ once I feel the FAQ is worthy enough.

Mainly, I’m interested in breaking out to the masses and making this FAQ as accessible and well-known as possible so that those who can benefit from it can use it. I couldn’t care less about fame or status, but I do appreciate the support I get. Knowing that I’m making a good, useful contribution that helps people is enough of a reward for me.

I’ve added a link to this in the General Information sticky; I thik it deserves one.

Thanks for the link, Arcane – I really appreciate your continued support with and belief in this project of mine. =)

Getting feedback about the FAQ, seeing that it’s helping people, having people come forward to contribute, and being able to work with interesting individuals is a big motivating factor for me, and it’s great to see. I like to know that my actions are having an impact, and knowing that what I’m doing is actually filling a need is important to me.

Information like this would be good in the wiki as well, feel free to contribute if you wish.

T’is a good suggestion.

I’m not against contributing to the Wiki (heck, I think I was a catalyst for it being started in the first place), but I’m not too keen on reposting content I’ve already posted in here. I’d prefer to just have a link from the Wiki to this FAQ (less redundancy).

That said, if anyone would like to take the content from this FAQ and put it in the Wiki, you can so long as they adhere to what I mentioned in this post.
