Kongregate Sidebar Firefox Extension page 4

Absolutely brilliant update Captain! It’s great to know which friends are online without having to leave the tab. The badges page for me is a thing of the past. An idea of another update is the friends online telling you which rooms they are in.

Very awesome, I haven’t restarted my browser yet, but I have complete faith. Faith enough to give an ‘awesome’ in advance!

If anyone is experiencing problems using the sidebar now that Kongregate is back online, please try the following things (until it works again):

1. Visit your “My profile” page, and then reload the sidebar.

2. Clear your browser’s cache (menu Tools/Clear Private data, only check “Cache” and press the “Clear private data now” button), and then reload the sidebar.

Please contact me if it doesn’t work. I will try to prevent these problems in the next release.

New update version 0.9.6:

- Display the chat room your online friends are in.

- Handle 404 errors (happens when you try to view a non existing user’s profile)

- CTRL + reload button now bypasses your browser cache (to fix problems as described yesterday, see post above)

@redferrariblack, I tested multiple versions of MacFoxII and macFox, on Firefox 2 and 3, but I could not see any of the problems you describe. Are you sure you installed the latest version? If so, could you mail me (extensions[at]captaincaveman.nl) or upload a picture somewhere showing the problem?

I like how there’s a shortcut to open/close the sidebar. Thanks for making this.

For a while I couldn’t work out how to reorder the badges though – took me to read your post to figure out it was the ‘view’ button. Is it possible to make it a right-click contextual menu? I know nothing about FF themes. This is a negligible issue though.

An idea for a way to sort badges is by game (alphabetically). I personally think that’d be pretty handy.

Also, I don’t really understand how the search works. It doesn’t seem to require that the text contains the search string, nor does it return everything that contains the search string.

EDIT: Can you also please fix the Friends Online? I have 22 friends online, and it shows only 20 friends…. The first page of friends…

@Juze, since there’s no proper way to access all your friends data on Kongregate (hopefully there will be one day), the only thing I can do is screen scrape pages. For now I choose to scrape just 1 friends page (which displays 20 friends) cause the list would IMO become uselessly long if I would add more, also would it become slower for both the extension, and Kongregate (because of all the extra pageviews each 20 minutes for each extension user). So I think that for the first official AMO release I will stick to just that first page, and when the extension becomes a huge success I’ll need to talk with Kongregate to see if they can create a clean way to access profile data for me.

If you and/or others really insist then I can scrape the first 2 pages of friends, but that’s probably still an arbitrary number of friends for some…

Is it possible to show the number of cards existing just like the badges? I mean just like 166 of 258 (badges). I have 23 cards now and it would be nice if it displayed out of 46.

I’m sure it would be trivially easy to take a little “out of 46” on there. But keep in mind that it’s likely just scraping the data off of your profile page where it counts the raw number of cards you have including any duplicates – my profile, for examples, says I have 23 but that’s including two cards that are repeated so the game itself says that I only have 21 (Both are right, I have 23 cards collected but I only have 21 out of the 46 available cards.). And it might not be so easy to accurately count up all those cards and make sure there are no repeats.

Great extension, by the way. Looking forward to future updates.

I think I’ll just leave the card counter as it is now, afaik there’s no page that displays the current total number of cards (cause you can’t assume there’s 46 now and there will be 47 in a couple of hours). It’s also less relevant how many cards you have, it’s more relevant which ones, as opposed to the badges which you could actually try to achieve a 100% (you can’t get old/missed cards right?)

I would suggest letting the person choose if he/she wants the bar at the side or top of the screen.

Also, I don’t like the idea of my passwords being stored on my computer. They are vulnerable to being hacked that way. I am anal retentive about NEVER pressing the “Remember Me” button. So I would suggest making that an option as well

For me my pic doesnt show or lvl or points or points till. and thats all it doesnt show why doesnt it for me?

i didn’t know there is a firefox 3 beta? (runs out to the computer to get it)

Have you considered adding a viewing ordering option – ‘by game’?

So it’d just list the badges by game. Maybe alphabetically.

Also, why aren’t the options for ‘all’ the same as ‘achieved’ and ‘unachieved’?

Of course, the ‘unachieved’ bit is what I’d use most, but it seems odd to miss out some options for ‘all’. As you’ve written the ordering code, wouldn’t it be simple to stick it in for ‘all’ as well?

New update version 0.9.7:

- Added views for your shouts and whispers (whispers only for your own profile…)

- Added a context menu for the filtering and sorting options.

- Added sorting by game to all 3 filters.

- Removed the “Play now” buttons and made the game title + badge image clickable.

- Bugfix: Developers could not see their level + points.

@acidDICA, the search searches through the name of the game, the badge and the description of the badge, do you have an example of a search which is doing it wrong?

@CyanLink, Displaying the UI at the top could theoretically be done, but it would be quite a job, and a job which IMO does not give too much advantage over a vertically styled UI. I only have 1 week left before my holiday, so I want a stable release to addons.mozilla.org before then, that is not long enough to create something like that decently. So if I decide to actually create an alternative UI (I was personally thinking more of a mini mode, more something like a “normal” menu then a different layout) it will be when I get back. The extension does not know your password so that’s safe. But you do indeed need to be logged in on Kongregate to be able to see your personal profile date (unachieved badges and whispers). I hope that Kongregate will one day also list the unachieved badges for “not logged in” profiles, cause then you will only need to login for your whispers (which are less relevant IMO).

@Darksimal, beta 5 already, release candidate 1 should be out soon!

I was still kind of hoping someone (The_3lder?) was able to design some nice reload/change user graphics before the release to addons.mozilla.org. But if no one can find the time for this I’ll try to just release it as it is this weekend.

Yes, I’ve got plenty of time. I’m asking myself, if obtaining this badge was worth the time… Well sometimes I was bored. So thanks to this game, I can now easily sleep ^^.

Ah… I didn’t realise it was checking the descriptions too. No, it’s working properly. I just typed in ‘easy’ when I first got it, before I worked out how to change sorting options and was surprised to see a bunch of things that didn’t immediately show that word.

@The_3lder, I like those shapes. With white on red, they’d match the K icon. I’d do that.

P.S. The new version (0.9.6) Is looking great – taking off the ‘play now’ button was a great idea and thanks for the ordering options.
