I agree that it’s a problem that originality gets downvoted. I think it’s common sense that you have to built your game off the shootorials but that the endresult can be completely different. However I can understand that it’s difficult for unexperienced games/people with no programming skills, to see how 1 game was made even before the shootorials were made and doesn’t use any of it’s code, and another game did use the shootorial code but came up with way differet gameplay.

Seems like people are really getting into the Kong Labs and the contest eh? Well lets see how people do shall we? I’ll just sit back and watch from the sidelines.

I was wondering, does voting on entrees go until Nov. 28, or does it go until Dec. 6 and the latest that your game can be entered is Nov. 28?

Judging: Each eligible Submission will be judged upon the following criteria (the “Judging Criteria”): 100% popularity based on the average five-star user rating on Kongregate.com as of 11:59:59 p.m. PT on November 30, 2008. Each submission must have received a minimum of 30 ratings to be eligible.
Well, this little fragment from the rules says that voting goes until “11:59:59 p.m. PT on November 30, 2008”, which means you have another 2 days or so for your game to get voted. So I guess you CAN submit it on the 28th and still get enough votes to win. Oh, and the prize decision is on December 1, right after the voting closes.

If I’ve submitted a game, then changed some crucial parts that I think will result in a significantly higher rating, can I upload it as a different game and ask for Kong to delete the old one?

I think you can update your current game.

Silly Question: We can use the tutorials to make games for our own use right? Like school projects, etc etc…

I use CS4 is there a problem?

You can use CS4, you just have to either:
a) use the AS3 source and code in AS3.
b) tell CS4 that you want to use AS2.
(Why do people assume that every new version of flash invalidates every old version?)

I thought that probably there was the same things in the old one and the new one. I just wanna be sure. Draco, you friggin rule!

ActionScript 3 does indeed have new things and make old things obsolete (either for better security, less lag, or other reasons) but that doesn’t relay on which version of Flash (I learned game coding with a book for Flash MX (Flash 6) and used Flash MX 2004 (Flash 7) for making the game. Even into Flash 8 everything is still the same.

Thats why I use AS2, just like Shootorial asks.

> If your version is older than Flash MX 2004 (which is over five years old now), you will need to download CS3, as versions before that do not support ActionScript 2.0. If you have something more recent, then it is your choice – but be warned that the interface will likely be different to that demonstrated in the shootorials. bq.
Um Actually, Flash 8 supports Action Script 2

Hey, I’m new and after I heard that Kongregate offers free tutorials, I decided to sign up and learn how. Cut straight to the point.
Do I need to be very artistic in order to do programming? Because I suck terribly in art. I just want to know if it’s a requirement..

Not necessarily, but it really depends on what kind of game you’re making. Usually in a situation like that you would collaborate with someone else to do art or music… in fact there is a forum area dedicated to that, [here](/forums/8).

Sure. There are plenty of alternative flash game making programs. See the thread: HOW TO MAKE GAMES in the programming forum.

ok, I need some serious HELP !!!!
I have Adobe Flash CS4. When I downloaded the AS2 source files I could customize and modify the space ship game relatively easliy. Then I downloaded the AS3 source files I noticed that I liked that version of the game much more. As soon as I loaded the .fla file to tinker with the game, (or even generate the preview from CS4): The swf becomes inoperable and the .fla will not generate a working swf or working preview. I get a dead menue screen that has " PLAY – NORMAL – HARD" before play is even selected. Any advise ?

Copy the fla into the classes folder and open it from there
