Your character

Health: Your maximum health.
Mana: Your maximum mana. If you gain mana over this amount it will be lost.
Damage: This is added to damage as a flat amount when you combine/redeem skulls or use spells. It is added only once, regardless of how many skulls you combine/redeem. However, when you use a spell which will redeem skulls, you will get the damage bonus both on spell damage and skulls.
Healing: This is added to health as a flat amount when you combine/redeem ankhs. It is added only once, regardless of how many ankhs you combine/redeem.
Add. Mana: This is added to your mana as a flat amount when you combine/redeem gems. It is added only once, regardless of how many gems you combine/redeem.
Armor: Every 10 armor reduces the damage received by 1.
Luck: Determines your chance of having an additional turn after your current one. Also see below.
Rage: Determines your chance of dealing double damage. Rage only applies to the damage over opponent’s armor rating, so if your base damage is not enough to hit an opponent, rage can’t make you go over it! Also see below.
Block: Determines your chance of blocking damage (so it does 0 damage). Also see below.
The chance of Luck/Rage/Block is determined by subtracting the opponent values of your values. If you reduce your opponent’s stats, that will also raise your own percentages. Even if you get opponent to the negative, you will keep receiving bonus out of it.

Your island

Tree: The tree determines the maximum level of your buildings and the number of treasure hunter licenses you get daily.
Arena: Gives XP bonus for PVP fights which rises by each arena level. This is also the place where you can enter tournaments. Winning Arena fights give you Assassin and Victory points, XP, crystals and items. Arena fights cost 10 energy, the server will look another player of the same level to fight you for 10 seconds. If it can’t find any, you will fight a preset AI opponent. You can know whether you fight AI or not by looking at the top left corner of their info bar, human opponents will show a Kongregate K there.
Cave: In the cave you can find crystals, diamonds, energy, items, worms and spiders. The quality of items, the amount of crystals/diamonds/energy and the strength of monsters is rising by every level of the cave. This is where you can get Mining points for the leaderboards. Every item you find gives 1 Mining point. Fighting monsters is slightly cheaper here than hunting, and gives the same rewards.
Mages’ School: Here you can learn the neutral and cult spells. The maximum level you can learn is the level of your Mages’ School.
Neighbour island: You find this on the right side. By clicking it you can visit another Guardian’s island, having access to the shop and monster there. The neighbour island is “fixed” to every island and changes every few minutes (I think.) You can also visit other Guardians via the Top 100 bar on the bottom or via the Rankings interface.
Monster: There is a monster in the lower left corner. To fight it costs 15 energy, and you can also chase it away in which case it will be replaced with another monster immediately. The cost of chasing away depends on the level of monster, starting from 10 energy. Killing the monster gives you Hunter points, XP, crystals and items. The monster respawns 3 hours after you kill it.
Shop: Here you can sell your items for more than the sell icon gives. Another player can come to your island and buy your stock. You can also visit other islands and buy from their shops. The percentage what you get out of sales rises by shop level. According to the tooltip, the shop also raises your chance of certain items dropping.
Crystals on the front of island: You can gather these by spending a Treasure Hunter License. Red crystals give crystals while yellow crystals give energy. Make sure to look around for islands with fat yields.

Top menu bar

Fight button: This is the same as the Fight button in the Arena, initiates a PVP fight.
Character: Shows your current character stats. There is a second tab “Accounts” where you can buy Military account. Military account has many advantages and I suggest you buy it as soon as you can.
Bonuses: This is where you can spin the slot machine. You get 2 free spins each every day at 0:00 PST and 12:00 PST. This page also shows your current daily bonuses, but you can’t get those by coming here, you need to reload the page.
Medals: You get medals for various achievements in the game. This is the primary source of stats. Take your time to look through them, there are plenty easily achievable medals. You can also buy certain medals for diamonds.
Rating: Here you can look up the leaderboards for various categories for today, yesterday or for all time. Ranking in any of the leaderboards by the end of the day (0:00 PST) awards you a diamond bonus. Top100 in each category awards you 1 diamond, Top10 awards 3 diamonds and being the first awards you 5 diamonds. You get diamonds from each of the categories individually. There are also weekly leaderboards which reset at every monday 0 PST. Ranking in Top100, 10 or 1 awards you 10, 30 or 50 diamonds in the weekly leaderboard. To get an idea of how many points you will need in a certain category to rank, switch the view to “For yesterday”. In the second tab you can see the current Cult rankings too. Every day members of the first ranked Cult will receive a bonus of 5000 crystals, while members of the last ranked Cult will receive a bonus of 100 energy to catch up.
Get More: This is where you can buy diamonds or spend diamonds. It also has a shortcut to your shop “My market” so you don’t have to return to your island. In the “Chest” tab you can see your inventory, backpack and chest. Additional backpack and chest slots can be bought with diamonds. In the “Services” tab you can use various services that cost diamonds. Repairing items that drop from monsters usually doesn’t worth it, they will drop it again! The “Avatar” tab lists currently available avatars and their requirements. You can also buy avatars for diamonds. Avatars are a great source of additional stats. You gain stat rewards for avatars permanently when you earn them, you don’t have to have the avatar active! If you are on another Guardian’s island, you can access their shop here via the “Market” tab.
XP bar: Shows your progress towards next level. Leveling up to level 4 is quite fast, it gets a lot slower after with every level.
Energy bar: Shows your current energy. You regenerate 1 energy every 30 seconds up to 100 energy. You can have more than 100 energy, but your regeneration stops if you are above.
Crystals: Shows the amount of crystals you have. You can spend crystals in the shops of other Guardians or in crystal tournaments. All upgrades also require crystals.
Diamonds: Diamonds are the premium currency of the game. You can buy medals, item slots, avatars and energy refills on your diamonds. You can buy diamonds via the “Get more” menu tab, clicking the plus button beside the diamonds amount or by clicking the chest below. You also gain a lot of free diamonds from daily bonuses, medals or by ranking on the leaderboard.
Floating chest: Shows you the current diamond purchase bonus. A yellowish chest with a lightning gives an energy bonus, a red chest with crystals gives a crystal bonus on your next purchase. If you see diamonds in the chest your next purchase will be tripled (so you get 3 times as much diamonds) and you also receive one of the three merchant items.

Icons at the bottom right

! icon: Your message log. Various awards and other messages appear here.
? icon: Will open a new tab with the Heavens kongregate forum.
Cogwheel icon: Opens the game options screen.

List of players on the bottom

The Guardians who ranked in yesterday’s Top 100 Victories are shown here. In the top left corner their level is shown, in the bottom right their rank shows. If the latter is green, the player is online now. Players who have a star on their portrait are Generals (earned or bought the General avatar.)

Elixirs explained

To find out a tier of any elixir, look at the background color. Tier 1 (level 1) is gray, tier 2 (level 3) is green, tier 3 (level 5) is blue, tier 4 (level 7) is purple and tier 5 (level 9) is orange. If you can use an elixir in your backpack, it will automatically appear in battle.

Health elixirs: These give health! You can use them on every turn. So far they come in 5 tiers, healing 25/125/1000/2500/10000 hit points.

Mana elixirs: These give mana! You can use each of them every second turn. So far they come in 5 tiers, giving 30/40/50/60/70 mana.

Brutanol elixirs: These give damage bonus. You can use them on every turn, their effect lasts 2 turns. Same tier brutanol elixirs do not stack, but different tiers do. So far they come in 5 tiers, giving 10/50/200/1000/2000 damage bonus. Brutanol is very useful when hitting armored opponents or just to make the fight shorter.

Curse elixirs: These give your opponent a debuff on luck/rage/block both reducing his chances to proc these skills and raising your chances. You can use them on every second turn, their effect lasts for 3 turns. Same tier curse elixirs do not stack but different tiers do. So far they come in 5 tiers, giving 2/5/8/10/15 stat reduction per stack. Curse elixirs are exteremely valuable, negating your opponent’s chance to get lucky, deal double damage or block your hits, while raising your own chances. Save them for harder monsters or PVP.

Agony elixirs: These damage opponent at the end of his turn. You can use them on every second turn, their effect lasts for 3 turns. Each tier can stack up to 3 times, and different tiers stack as well. So far they come in 5 tiers, doing 30/120/360/500/? damage per stack. Agony damage is not lowered by armor. It is very useful on high hp or high armor monsters. For PVP, keep in mind that the damage is dealt at the end of your opponent’s turn, you might be dead by then!

How do I get item X?

Merchant’s Amulet/Ring/Bag: You can get these when you purchase diamonds while a chest with diamonds is floating in the top right part of the screen. You can also buy these from other players for 30 diamonds each.

Trident of Lightning/Energon/Winner’s Sword/Diamond Necklace: Gladiator tournaments. A less powerful version of Trident now also drops from Executioner’s Shadow and is available from spins.

Wishing Amulet/Ring/Bag/Ring of Luck: Item rewards from spins (2 chests). Requires level 4 to 6.
Ring of Fortune/Chance: Item rewards from spins (2 chests). Requires level 7.
Stone Hammer of Mutilation/Pick of War: Item rewards from spins (2 chests). Requires level 7.
Tier 4 potions: Item rewards from spins (3 chests). Requires level 7.

Bear Paw: Drops from Matsacook
Berserker’s Dagger: Drops from Butcher
Berserker’s Hammer: Drops from Executioner’s Shadow

Stingers: Drops from Spiders in Cave.
Swan Feather: Drops from Hag

Armor/Amulet/Ring/Relic of Haze, Darkness, Twilight: These items only dropped during an event and not available anymore.

Medals explained

Most of these are very easy to figure out. There are some odd kinds I’ll cover here.

Kill X in a row: For these medals, you need to kill the specific monster and only that. If you lose or kill any other monster including cave worms and spiders, your streak will break and you will have to start over. To get around this limitation, purchase a Military Account.
Find item X: You need to kill the monsters dropping the item (see list above). You don’t have to take the item, once the item appears in loot screen your medal will trigger.
Horror Collection: Right now, you can’t obtain this medal.
Defeat opponent in the Arena on first move: To get this, your first action must kill the opponent. This leaves you the choice of matching skulls or using a mana-free cult spell. Drinking an elixir also counts as a move! During the current event, you can use snowballs to get progress toward these medals. Keep snowballing!

Advice on how to beat some monsters

A generic advice would be that don’t fight them until you are ready! If you keep picking up bonuses from medals and avatars, you can beat them soon enough. But I know some people are impatient (I am), so I’ll cover some of the nastier monsters. I don’t mention cult spells in the strategies as I generally consider them too costly for fighting monsters.

Commodore’s Ghost and Master’s Shadow

These hit hard and have plenty of health. They can’t cast spells however, so if you deny them the chance of matching skulls they can’t damage you at all. Curse is very handy as their stats are pretty high.

Taar Maan

This nasty guy will cast a quite nice shield once below 1000 HP. The trick is to kill it from over 1000 HP in a turn, or to deny him the 50 mana needed for the shield. If you let him match skulls, he might not get to 50 mana until you kill it. Even when he is fully shielded, you can still damage him nice with Agony potions. Curse is handy to lower his chances of getting lucky and shielding up.

Judge

Judge will cast armors on every chance, ending up at 5000 armor. Try to make a lot of damage early before he stacks up his shields. Once he did, you can still use Agony. Curse is not very useful on him until he gains a lot of block from his shields.

Executioner’s Shadow

This guy hits like a truck and can reach over 7500 armor. First you need to curse him a lot mostly to get rid of the chance that he gets lucky killing you off in seconds. Then put up tons of Agony while shielding yourself up and trying to outheal his damage.

Spiders

Like with Commodore’s Ghost, deny them the chance of matching skulls. Shield up a lot, wear block gear and curse them to get even more block chance. They do not have a lot of armor so you can quickly chop away their huge health. I’m not sure how bad the lower levels of spiders are, the ones I meet at level 7 are quite nasty.

Matazuu

Keep your HP at high all time while burning his mana. When Matazuu gets under 200k health, it will hit you with a very nasty attack which can be as much as 20k. Have high block and hope for the best ;]

How can I spend my playing time?

Arena PVP Fights

Arena gives the best XP to Energy ratio in the game. Make sure you have your Arena upgraded to get more XP bonus!
If the Arena clock runs out, you will face an AI opponent. There are easier and harder AI opponents and they are usually challenging when you enter a new character level, and get very easy by the time you are about to level up.
If you get a human opponent, a Kongregate K will show in the top left corner of the opponent info bar. Humans vary widely in skill and experience.

If the opponent is unknown to you, always switch to the stats page and check out their various stats. This can help you to determine a proper strategy. If you go second against a human there is a good chance you will lose, learn to accept this and don’t waste your elixirs in vain. Block is your best friend in PVP, and pretty much your only chance to turn the tables if you go second.
Always have a full range of Mana elixirs and possibly one of each Curse elixir when you enter the arena. While Agony elixirs work really well at the lower levels, they quickly lose their usefulness when character health gets higher.

Hunting

Hunting is a great choice if you want to win every fight. If you pick the right monsters, losing is almost impossible. Only fight monsters you can handle! Hunting gives a LOT worse XP to energy ratio than Arena.
Easiest way to go on a hunting spree is by browsing the Top 100 bar on the bottom. Start by visiting the Guardians that can spawn the highest level of monsters you plan to beat. Every Guardian can spawn monsters up to one level higher than their current level. Once you run out of the high level monsters, you can turn to the lower level ones.
Some monsters yield medals when killed a lot and some drop rare items only available from them. While there is an option to chase away monsters, it usually doesn’t worth the energy. See the above post for additional tips on how to kill certain monsters.

Mining

You can mine in the Cave. Keep upgrading it for better rewards! The Cave is great to spend your energy quickly, but offers almost no XP.
What you can encounter in the cave:

  • Crystal – Comes in different amounts which is raising by each Cave level.
  • Items – Give 1 Miner point each. The items you find get better with every Cave level.
  • Diamond – 1 diamond is all that you can find, and the chances of finding one doesn’t seem to rise with Cave level.
  • Worms – A very easy to beat monster giving you hunter points and usual monster loot. The worm gets stronger with every Cave level but it’s not really challenging.
  • Spiders – A much stronger monster giving you hunter points and exclusive drops. There are several types of spiders varying in difficulty.
  • Altars – These look like a cup, come in different sizes. Altars can’t really hurt you but have a lot of armor and hp, making it hard to crack them. Bring Agony elixirs! Altars drop treasures you can sell for a lot of crystals or diamonds. You can’t do anything else with treasures other than selling them.
Number of agony pots needed to kill altars:

    Agony type: Lvl 7+5 Lvl 7 Lvl 5+3 Lvl 5 Lvl 3+1 Lvl 3 Lvl 1
    Lesser Altar 3 5 5 7 14 15 85
    Medium Altar 5 8 8 11 26 30 -
    Great Altar 11 18 19 25 62 71 -

    Gladiator Tournaments

Every few hours there a Gladiator Tournament is hosted. You can find the list of upcoming tournaments in the Arena building. These tournaments give equal chance for players because everyone starts as level 1 with 150 health without any item, medal or avatar bonuses, and with only neutral spells. Tournaments have multiple stages detailed below.

    Bidding

In the first 10 minutes of the tournament, Guardians can bid to participate. The minimum bet is 200 energy, 5000 crystals or 3 diamonds. Only the 16 highest bidders will take part in the tournament as Gladiators, the rest will become Spectators. If less than 16 players enter the Tournament by the end of this stage, the Tournament is canceled. Depending on time of day, these tournaments can get very expensive or stay quite cheap. In the last minute bets can go very high, especially with crystal tournaments.

    Betting

The first round matchups are now displayed. If you are a Gladiator (you are listed here) all you need to do is wait for the match to start. If you are a Spectator, you will need to pick a Gladiator to bet on before the clock runs out. Your Gladiator will have to win for you to collect any rewards. The rewards you get depend on the size of your bet and its ratio to other bets that had been put on this Gladiator.

    Fight

The Gladiators fight to the death and the survivors get to the next round. Spectators can watch any match by clicking the eye icon between pairs. The winner of the finals will get all the prize fund and 3 Champion points. Those who make it to the semi-finals get 1 Champion point each.
Because you all start without any bonuses, tournaments takes a lot of skill/experience and sometimes a little luck to win. Carefully analyze the board every turn, pick good moves and also try to not leave good choices for your opponent. Use your spells wisely, mana doesn’t come easy in tournaments!

    Adepts tournaments

These are exactly the same as Gladiator tournaments, but they start as soon as 8 players enter. This means no bidding, everyone gets to play as a Gladiator, and there are no Specators.

    How to gain free diamonds

Daily spins: You can spin for free 2 times twice a day, at 0 PST and 12 PST.

Mining: You can find diamonds in the cave.

Medals: Quite a few medals reward diamonds.

Leaderboards: Ranking in the top 100 in any leaderboard gets you 1 diamond. Ranking in the top 10 gets you 3 diamonds. Ranking first gets you 5 diamonds. The weekly leaderboards give 50 diamonds for first, 30 diamonds for top 10, 10 diamonds for top 100.

How to spend and how not to spend my diamonds

Backpack/Chest slots: You will always need more space! Aim to open at least one page of the chest.

Military account: Military account adds another 30 seconds of thinking time in fights. In addition, losing with a Military account won’t cause you to lose progress towards “X in a row” type of medals. If you don’t have a Military account, even winning against another type of monster will cause you to lose progress towards “Kill X monster in a row” medals. You can buy/renew your military account at your player stats page, in “Account” tab. Every purchase adds 30 days to your current time.

Cult spells: Some spells gain more from leveling than others. Usually, spells that give stats or armor scale better with level than those that only give damage.

Energy refills: Can help you climb that last 1-2 spots towards a Leaderboard, and makes your progress faster.

Spins: The spins were “buffed” recently giving away very powerful items, they are a good way to spend your diamonds now.

Reforging: Reforging is a great way to lower the level requirements of an item but it can get costly. Reforging for the stats themselves is only worthy on very rare items (like Relic Armor or Amulet), with most items you are better with hoping for another, nicer drop.

Medals: Unless you are in a hurry, not worth buying. You will get them sooner or later. An exception are cult spell medals, unless you plan to change your cult, you can never earn other cult spell medals for free.

Avatars: Some avatars are very hard or almost impossible to get, but those tend to be very expensive. This really depends on your pocket. Avatars get a discount every now and then, if you plan to buy, try to wait for these discounts.

Inorix, thanx for the great Beginner’s Guide! What do you say of the military account? How does it help you exactly? Worth its diamonds? And is the yellow star right upper corner in some player’s avatars a sign that they have a military account?

    Flag Post

Military account gives you an additional 30 seconds of thinking time. But the important part is, players with military account don’t lose “streaks” when losing. This is pretty much mandatory if you want to get “x in a row” type of medals.

Star on a portrait means the player is a general (earned or bought the general avatar).

Are grails immune to rage or something? Or does rage just multiply your base damage and not what you get added from the berserker spell (like the +150 from stingers)? ’cuz I sat there wailing on a grail (1000 dmg reduction) with a damage total of over 600 (when on berserker) and never did a single damage to it outside of agony potions. 600 × 2 is 1200, which means that with a 46% chance I should be doing about 200 dmg to the thing with berserker on…

Rage only applies for damage that is already over the armor.

Merchant does. Mouseover item to the left-botom slot in your inventory.

Somebody answer me at all or not? Why was I banned? Just yesterday, I activated the account and combat during the tournament rates displayed on the scoreboard did not clear the message. After I reload the page it says that you are banned 0_o On what basis? What you do not like me or my character?

We do not like players using swear words in public chat with multiple violations.

    1. Ban is permanent.
    2. Besides you, 6 people were banned the same day.

The developer gave the reason by which you were banned. You should consider taking this up directly via PMs as this thread is not the place for something akin to this. Lastly, out of pure comment, if you have to rely on warnings to save your character, you’re lost.
