**Make sure you are not in one of the following situations:**

i agree, crazymunky, avast! isn’t a bad antivirus. o.O
now if you were speaking of something along the lines of norton (and don’t you dare say that one isn’t bad) then i’d agree with you, sublinet.
give me a “good” reason and i may consider disabling avast!, otherwise forget it.
I also had trouble… moreso with performance than with access. Avira was the root cause. I have wised up to the Anti-Virus BS. These free apps are resource hogs that provide Virus Protection. Do you, gamer geek, really need PROTECTION? No. Detection and Removal is sufficient if you have a robust maintenance plan that includes regular scanning. No more virus programs on my machine thank you.
Being a computer engineer “My Website”.[http://www.jasonclark.it](http://www.jasonclark.it) I can advise that they more are less are as bad as one another. Also, Norton has improved throughout the years!
If you go to [http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php](http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php) you will see comparisons between some well-known AVs; Trend Micro came out on top in May, but it changes month to month!
And to agree with Syzygy77,
I don’t use an AV on my machine – I run a weekly check using DDS/GMER logs etc.
Also, listen to the DEVELOPER … developers tend to know slightly more about computers than the average Joe Bloggs on The Internet!
