[DarkOrbit] Beware

This game is actually very good and I would rate it 5/5 if it was not of the PvP settings.

Unless you spend money on this game, as a new player (first few 100’s of hours), you will constantly be killed by other players of different factions with end game ship/weapons. You won’t be able to quest safely anywhere and won’t be able to defend yourself (they kill you under 5 sec even if you got a good ship), nor run away from an enemy player.

There is no newbie protection of any kind, even during your very first quest you can be killed by the top players of the game, and believe me, they enjoy it.

Only way to be able to enjoy the game would be if a new server would be up. After some research, no new server planned.

zgod, I see where you’re coming from but there is some newbie protection, and how often you get killed by the bigger players all depends on the circumstances. We’ve all been killed by goliaths when we had smaller ships, its a part of the game(though it can be pretty frustrating) ;)
Anyway, the trick is to stay in a phoenix so you have free rep until you can get a better ship, like a nostromo. You could join a clan (you need 50k credits though, but they’re not too hard to earn, mos clans refund you anyway) and most clans will give you credits to help you get started.
I’m a lvl 12 vengeance and I haven’t gone off spending 10’s of euros on this game, I’d rate it 5/5, PvP included.

Nostromo ship is exactly what I bought as soon as I gathered 100k credit. I was thinking “Hey that’s the fastest no real cash ship, I should be able to run away from their mid speed goliaths”, I even bought 2 of the 10x speed at 2000urinium collected from special boxes just to seal the deal speed wise for my safety. Know what? when the goliaths were trying to kill me they notice they were loosing terrain, they just press c to switch for fast speed gear to catch me up, then c again to kill.

Instead of dying in 1 sec, it takes 4-5 (10-15k damage a hit). Can’t quest outside of map1, and there is very little you can do in map1.

This mean you won’t survive with a big ship, you can only survive if you got a real money ship (you get 30 repair credits with it I heard, so you can get killed 30 times without having to pay repair).

The guild giving credit you mentioned, as far as I know it is not possible to give credits to another player, only to help him kill higher enemies. The leonov ship is 5 millions on the server I was, and 5 mil won’t even guarantee you get it as it is blind bidding with no refund (what an awful system).

Like I said, the game is worth 5/5, as long as it’s a new server or that you own a real cash ship. No one in the reality outside of one of those 2 will ever agree that the newbie protection is half-decent. I rated it 1/5 due to frustration of the unplayability.

Look, as a level 12 vengeance who leads a clan and has been playing for months, I can tell you that there is a way to transfer credits to another player via your clan. Only today I gave a 700k payout to one of my members to help him in a rep bot 3 bid.
And there’s no way a nostro can beat a goliath in a race, unless you had full x10 generators, nevertheless, nostromos are the best non-uri ships available. And here’s a tip, there is a newbie protection system, it’s the yellow bar on the left of your mini-map, the higher that is, the greater the danger (only in x-1 and x-2)
What server do you play on by the way?

USeast 1 server

I never knew about the yellow bar and I tried reading as much as I could on the game. That brings the point of terrible tutorial (well none) and missions aren’t explicit enough for new players to get the hang of the game and learn features.

So anyway, how does that yellow bar exactly work? Is it related to how close enemy player ship is? even if he is stealth mode? does that bar react to enemy players only or to npc as well?

If you are a newbie, you have a long game in front you.

I’m not exactly certain how the yellow bar works, I think it shows how many enemies in the sector (enemies, not npc’s)
The higher it is, the more likely you are to die, if it’s above halfway up, I’d aadvise staying at a port until it goes back down.
They have loads of FAQs on the Dark orbit forum, but i have to concede that there are no real tutorials.

GUYS IM AN AMETURE ON THIS GAME SO LISTEN! Eothain your right about the wellow bar, also, in home sectors with bases like 3-1, you can see those super players as red dots with a dashed square around them, it always best to avoid them as much as posibel depending on your ship class and how stupid they are, i advise tryin to find some newb friendly clans for the sake of money problems, becuase without clan and guidance, you will get really tiked of at this game and stop playing, also, you can try and find helpful players wich will act as a sort of “escort” for you or just team up with other friends, and it by all means posibel to kill an Enemy Goliath with a pack of heavly armed Pheonixes, if you are prone to dying a lot, use Pheonix armed to the teeth, and also, THERE IS A WIKI FOR THIS GAME! just type in DarkOrbit wiki on googel, they have lots of awnsers, i have used it multipel times to help me in this game

The yellow bar is the number of enemy ships in your maps (X-1 and X-2).

If you don’t like to be destroyed, stand in the portals or in the base.

You won’t be able to enjoy this game unless you play with a group and you all spend at least 50-100$ to get high end equipment to be able to survive the pkers.

actually that’s the last resort way to survive, if you join a more or less decent clan you can get laods of Creds and put them into Bids at strategic times like the server time range where the server is least populatad for maximum chance to win Bids, and having lots of money can leave your Uridium in good shape because you will simply buy the ship again instead of wasting 500 Uridium on repairing your ship and having to wait for your REP drone to finish repairs, this way you can use your Uridium to its fullest extent without having to worry about having enough Uridium to repair your ship unless you won a Uridium ship from a bid, also, buying Elite Gear such as engines and Shield generators that cost Uridium will actually turn out to be worth it if you use your engines or shields to survive longer or be abel to get away faster, it works becuase i use this system

note that you still CAN be destroyed at portals! You may get 15 seconds of protection after jumping into a system, but after that they can shoot you again! I have even seen a battle of goliaths in my home base (red colored players vs blue colored players)

not even your hame base offers enough protection, one time, about 10-15 Golis/Vengys came in all in a line ish pattern and blew up about 20 of our VRU ships

I worked this one out all on my own… get a Cloak, dont shoot. You keep it even if you die, this way no NPC’s will attack you, and only a few other players will.

I agree with what you’re saying Zgod. Even now, in a clan, with a bigboy ship, max mp1 lasers, four drones, 20k shield, 290 speed.. etc etc, I still do not stand a chance against anything beyond the second sector.

To be honest, I have found a slight ease to not getting killed, as sticking close to the warp gates, while still pokoing your head out of the demilitarized area, keep an eye on the red dots (being your enemy..) if you see it start to shake a little, left and right while heading straight for you, then you can be sure it is a player, if not, then there is a big chance that it’s not.

Joining a clan straight away is a good idea, as you have a good chance of getting a decent amount of Credits from the clan each day, they will give tips, and even help in battles. Just be sure to concerve your Uridium for either repairs, or once you have enough, buy something that is worth it. For those who buy your Uridium, go crazy I guess.

oh, for BigBoy, if you do not fully equip the 2 Configurations your a slow flying hunk o junk, here is my Configurationfor the BigBoy i use: Configuration 1: full lasers, ONLY SPEED GENERATORS ON SHIP witch are the best both currencies can buy, buy full of the 16K ones but make sure to make lots of money to BUY your ship again after you die, so as soon as you get 2K Uridium buy the 2K Uridium speed engine as soon as posibel and aim for a full layout of them (if you do youll be faster then a Nostro with the same things BOO YAH >:]) extras are well, your choice but also try to bid on REP-3, it REALLY helps. For drones, have them all equiped with Shield generators for Configuration 1. For Configuration 2,(i call it tank mode ;]) (you can switch Configurations in game every 5 seconds) again, full lasers, ONLY SHIELD GENERATORS ON THE SHIP, with max 256K engines its about 75K Shield. Drones get more lasers, its tank mode, its supposed to be a mode where you can hit back hard, not exactly be indestructabel while you try and limp back to a gate or something. good luck and have fun :D

This game is a total joke. The PVP system is pitiful. If you want to enjoy this game at all, you have to spend lots of real $$$. All the actually useful items can only be bought for uridium aka $$$. One of the people talked about the auction, but in the auction you can’t even see who bid how much on anything.
Sure, you can earn lots of credits through the skylab but credits are not the same as uridium.

1/5, would rate 0/5 if possible. Don’t waste your time with this game!!!! It’s all about nothing more than who outspends everyone else in real $$$. I couldn’t even get past the second map in a fully upgraded nostromo due to all the pking. I did manage to get to a third map in the starter ship (at an off time) and encountered some very big alien ships. They would have been a lot of fun to fight in a decent ship. However, with all the camping and pking it’s not even possible to make it there without buying a goli and top notch upgrades for real $$$.

All the newbie protection does is tell you when enemy players are in your star map. The only thing you can do in this case is hide in the “safe zone”. Where’s the fun in spending all your time hiding and worrying about pkers?

@ the Lrn2cloakandcollect: where’s the fun in the game if the only way you can interact with the environment is to collect things?

This game has so much potential. Sad, really…

Well you could try to bid for better items and ships, bidding uses credits not uridium gl.
