We’re going to collect expert map making tips in this thread. Post your own and we’ll edit the top page to incorporate the best!
GENERAL:
- No one likes maps that drag out for no reason. Make your maps as small as possible to keep them fun to play.
- Aesthetics matter. Litter open areas with a few forests, mountains or hills to make your maps prettier.
- Avoid starting any unit within the firing range of an enemy unit. It tends to remove early tactical options.
- Try to give each player several interesting choices at the start of the game. Make them decide between going for that ore deposit or building an army. Interesting tactical options makes your map more fun.

- Only put neutral buildings in contested areas. If the player needs to spend their first few turns capturing buildings that no one else can realistically get to, you’re just wasting their time. They should already own those buildings. If one player has an easy time defending a building from being captured (like an oil rig close to their starting shore) that building is not in a contested area.

I’d also recommend not putting enemy units near each other. Try to keep them rather far away, or else the first player will have a large advantage.

Don’t just use 1 terrain type, use a variety, but also manuverable.

it seems that map making tips are being completely ignored :/
it seems that people would rather play a map with 100’s of starting units and stuff on then a well designed one where strategy is required

No, people would rather MAKE a dozen maps with 100s of starting units than a well-balanced map. People don’t play them very much…
Gerk makes some really nice, balanced maps.

i think using certain terrains around ur factories can restrict, or help ur new build units get to the battle field more qickly, n this will certainly change how the battle is played out

If you want to get high ratings from users who play against the AI, don’t make small classic maps with Command HQ’s in ‘contested’ area’s ..
The AI is rather dumb when it comes to protecting it’s own Command HQ, so will always loose within a few moves .. game over … not much fun (especially when you get the ‘game too short to count’ msg.) so expect a ‘1 star’ rating …

well u need more water than the 1st 1 , put a big lake in the middle , give 2 warmachines each (both in different places)
