Djent is its own genre, the origin doesn’t matter. It’s a name. Djent is too different from deathcore, prog metal or death metal to be affiliated with them. What characterizes a djent song is the use of a muted 7th string, indeed fulfilling the requirement to be its own genre.

in no way is “djent” too different from those things. It is used in different styles. Periphery is in every way a metalcore band, they just utilize a djent sound. Same goes for Arusha Accord. Meshuggah is a groove/thrash band. That shitty band I just listened to was deathcore, every part of it was standard deathcore structure and riffing. In no way does utilizing one sound once throughout the song make it an entirely different genre.
