What is the greatest guitar solo of all time to you, in any Genre.
P.S. Besides “Stairway to Heaven” I understand how amazing it is ;) , but we need to leave room for others.
edit: lets say great solos greatest is a bit over the top.

Stairway to Heaven and Freebird, two songs that I hear all the time for greatest guitar solo, are waaay too over-rated. Heard both, and hate both. That’s just me, though.
I think, for me, it comes down to the second solo from “My Sharona” or the second solo from “Green Grass and High Tides”. “My Sharona” has a great sound to it, but on the other hand, the second solo in “Green Grass and High Tides” is incredible. You can really tell the guitarist put his best effort into that solo. (Though the whole song is a great performance by any member’s part.)
Tough choice for me, so I’ma have to put both of those up there.

Green grass and high tides is amazing, and stairway to heaven is up there, because Jimmy winged it and it had the emotion of a song packed into a solo. It was pretty incredible. I don’t like free bird that much either.

Eternal Rest- Avenged Sevenfold The intro is amazing. I dont think it would be the “best” guitar solo ever but I think its one of the best.

Avenged sevenfold was always garbage, you only like them cause its an emo fad like death cab for cutie and hawthrone heights. the intro was easy as heck to learn for eternal rest just looked up tabs and learned it in about an hour, and ive only been playing for about a year and a half.
secondly dragonforce is ok but, the only reason they sound good is cause they have 3 guitars. if you take them apart each part takes no skill to learn, that is for through the fire and flames. they have way better songs only reason that one is popular is cause of guitar hero 3, so people say they like that song and never bother to buy a Cd or even download some other songs.

Apply some Pressure by Maximo Park is a great solo, but there is no way I can say it’s the greatest.

Firstly dragonforce is not ok, nor is it anywhere in the general spectrum of good.
Secondly when the hell did they get a third guitarist?
OnTopic: Listen to anything by The Human Abstract, “Mea Culpa” changed my life! Also I have always loved the twin guitar solos from bands like Darkest Hour and Trivium. And no thread is complete without somone mentioning SLAYER! The fact that hardly anyone understands that their solos concentrate so much more on chaos and speed other than melody and rythm makes them even greater.

“Intestinal Incubation” by Necrophagist, “Mind Machine” Scar Symmetry, and “From the Blind” by Daath are some other good ones.

I would have to say either “Highway Star” by Deep Purple or “One” by Metallica.

It all depends on how you look at the song. In terms of speed in solos, Stairway would not be your choice. You would pick a work by Steve Vai or John Petrucci if you were really looking for a fast song. In terms of talent, you could find solos that make you melt into pieces by just listening. Of course most of you seem to have forgotten Eruption by Van Halen.
References for what I look.

I’ve checked a lot of the songs on there by downloading them or youtubing them, but I would say it just about covers it.
