Music is music, Rap is poetry. It can suck, but so can any other music style.

Now I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of rap, I like a few bands, but I tend to disregard genre and go for what I like when I listen to it.

My point is, that I don’t know a thing about your music taste, and I’m willing to bet that a vaste majority of people will also think it ‘sucks’.

And Slart’ is right, you can’t condemn a whole genre, individual artists all have their own style, some might be amazing, and some might be truly terrible.

This is the most narrowminded thing I have ever seen on here.
Be ashamed of yourself.

I wouldn’t say I hated it. Funny thing is I listened to Eminem, Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre before I went to Germany and discovered Rammstein. Thus the world of rock and metal was opened to me and I haven’t looked back. I can’t quite stomach rap anymore, but you have to credit them for being very good at what they do. It’s like xSlartibartfastx says…it’s modern poetry.

Though I do find Dylan Moran’s take amusing:
Dylan Moran on Rap

A little narrow-minded but still raises a smile. :D

EDIT: Contains mild swearing.

I always thought of rap as a specific linguistic variant of music. On that note, I never understood the meaning behind the music in rap; since the focus is on the wordplay, why add in extraneous noise? The beats common in early hip-hop seem more to me like training wheels than anything else, purely a standard measure for the artist.

ALREADY BEEN DISCUSSED ENOUGH, BUT HERE’S ONE OF MY OTHER POSTS COPIED (on Rock vs. Rap)

JUST AS A REFRESHER – Most of you Hip-Hop/rap haters are judging the music based off of FAKE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE MUSIC!!!! I agree with a lot of you as far as mainstream music, but if you want to judge something, you have to study up on it….anyway, here it is (sorry for quotes that I put in the following paragraphs, they’re from ‘rock vs. rap’)

Imma start off with this. I think they each have their own place. Fuck “Rock vs. Rap,” music is about SELF…different things mean something different to everybody. I love some old rock, and love TRUE Hip-Hop.

“Slapping women, dubs, etc.” – That’s called not knowing SHIT about Hip-Hop. I’m not saying you have to either, but don’t create judgment on something until you understand it. That’s about taking only what you’ve heard on MTV, and applying it to all Rap/Hip-Hop music. Implying that Lil Wayne or Soulja Boy is the epitome of Hip-Hop HAHAHAH. ANY ARTIST LIKE HIM IS LOOKED DOWN ON BY REAL HIP-HOP ARTISTS.

Another issue is about your ability to dissect Hip-Hop verses…The meaning in a true Hip-Hop song is just as deep as that of a rock song, it’s just delivered in a different way. Hip-Hop relies MUCH more on the lyric than the instrumental behind it, which is why a lot of real/old Hip-Hop tracks sound so “simple.” The “hardcore” sound of many emcees is a reflection of Hip-Hop’s inner-city roots and the ‘down-and-out’ stance in society.
These ‘mainstream’ artists nowadays lean on extensive (yet run of the mill) instrumentals to cover up their lack of creativity, their lack of ability, and their lack of relevance.

And I’m with every rock listener as far as FAKE Hip-Hop goes. I felt the same way about rap when I was in middle school (I was a skater, into punk rock) but a couple years back I discovered underground Hip-Hop. Now, I’m a Bboy and write articles pertaining to Hip-Hop’s actual culture for my school paper.

You don’t have to like Hip-Hop, just respect it. Understand it. Eliminate the prejudice, and check out Zion I, Blue Scholars, The Grouch, Aesop Rock, The Last Emperor…the list goes on. If you refuse to listen to any of these (or other) conscious artists, then please don’t bother voicing an uneducated opinion…

Oh, and just in case I’ve got to specify, I’m white from the ‘burbs. I’m not “defending my people” like a lot of people may want to think lol

If you need more and aren’t convinced, I can go on :)…I can get MUCH more extensive if you’d like lol

Nah, there are a handful of rap artists I’d listen to if there was no other choice, I like really heavy grimey rap music, also, the anti-juggalo rap song is good. and someone did a mashup of Nuclear Assault and Snoop Dogg…
