Time: the future
Place: the USA
The United States congress has always had problems agreeing on anything.
One day, the people of the country finally get tired of it. There is massive widespread protest against the federal government. This eventually becomes so large that the 50 states split and become 50 independent countries.
Aftarwards, the governers (now presidents) meet and come to an agreement. The 50 new countries will have an agreement that works similar to the EU. The United States of America has turned into the North American Union. Citizens of each of the 50 countries of the NAU can travel freely between the countries in the union, much like in the EU. The countries have trade agreements and a military alliance, but each one is an indipendent nation.
How would people in America and the world be affected by this?

Everyone who isnt a white heterosexual christian male would move away from the southern US
The south’s economy would die.
Mexico would declare war on Texas, because Texas would do something bad to illegal immigrants. Arizona and New Mexico would join in. They would all fall to Mexico while the surrounding states wont care.

People in America probably wouldn’t be effected much, but without a strong government to enforce rules, a 1-3 world country can invade and easily take the nations one-by-one, and choas within the nations can lead to wars as well.

Would be easy to take over.
Now only a few countries have nukes as opposed to the entire landmass.

Because Nukes totally won’t screw everyone over. Seriously, even if said countries had nukes, their better off threatening them with the nukes than actually using.
Just take a minute to consider how screw’d said county(ies) are if they actually used even 1 of those NUKES.

Not quite. The 50 countries of the newly formed NAU have a military alliance, much like the EU.

If the EU was an political union additional to what it is now, it would be the USE.
It would be a step back, but most people wouldn’t be very affected.

I’d be concerned about finding a state that keeps rights similar to what is outlined in the federal constitution.

Hold that thought. Later on I’ll ask about what would happen if the EU became one big united country.
For now, discuss the hypothetical North American Union.
