What if The Soviet Union got to the moon first? How would America (and the world) react?

Cold war was pretty intense in the 60’s Just wondering, would a Russian landing weaken America, would it lead to a stronger USSR, could the 3rd world even turn to communism seeing it as more advanced?
Part of an essay I’m about to write.

In terms of balance of power/influence yes, if it was first.
Plus space race was a great source of national pride (and ideological reputation).
America got first, Russia was humiliated, and capitalism won.
A landing by the world’s top communist nation could have changed that

Russia still hasn’t gone to the moon.

That’s why it’s “WHAT IF it got first”

I’m pretty sure the whole first to the moon thing had nothing to do with anything and had no affect on the Cold War. If I were Russia I would let the Americans spend billions on something other than weapons and draw their attention away from the war for a while. Besides everyone knows, the second mouse gets the cheese.

could give Russia an excuse to annihilate America/Nato
the excuse being: You are all inferior to us and now we have solid proof, surrender now or be wiped out.

it could also greatly increase the moral of the communist nations and the Soviet Union might still exist
The people would be more likely to shut up because they feel like their gov is actually doing great things with their power, even though the people are starving.

We’re talking about very strong sense of national pride here but nevertheless, I think that if Russia landed on the moon first, it’d only have the bragging rights

The moon is the 51st state

Huh…didn’t Russia get to the Moon first in 1959? I think you might be mixing up “first on the Moon” with “first man on the Moon”. In any case, Russia did a lot of progress in spatial technology (first satellite, first man in space, first space station, etc.), so sending a cosmonaut to the Moon wouldn’t do much difference.

There are actually twenty Soviet spacecrafts on the lunar surface. All missions were unmanned, but it still counts since they are artificial objects that were launched to space. Sending a man to a hostile environment is undoubtedly more impressive, but the USSR still did something. We could compare this situation with Mars, which never felt man’s foot but is being rolled over by rovers.

America couldn’t make it to the moon, it’s all fake.

I’m sure the USSR would’ve called out the US on the fake landing if it happened.

Its been going there with crashed probes and robots since 1959

You would have died as you wouldn’t have had any air.

My opinion is, if Russia got first, the USA had to fight with massive economical problems (they spent so much in this and let it alone after all).
You can see Russia. Rich? No, I think.

I would be like, “Congratulations, you have landed men on the moon, now get them back.”

Seriously, the Russians didn’t exactly place a high priority on things like “safety” or “reliability” or “the value of human life”

True but maybe they didn’t want to? Google moon landing is fake or something and you’ll find facts backing it up. Or watch all of these

Good thing you have YouTube videos. That overrides the opinion of every scientist ever.

We would all be speaking Russian.

Back then during the time of soviet union, they didn’t

However, if soviet union got men in the moon before other countries (USA), the men would have likely died on that flight since glory and bragging rights would be the only things relevant to government of that time, not essential things like security

Definetly yes, plus more bragging from other communist nations.
Might have even made Socialism look better than capitalism

On Topic: Things will still be the same, I guess. Russia will just have a higher superiority complex.
