Looks like a 4 upside down.

What is it used for exactly?

No, I prefer to take a second to write out the whole word “and”.

It’s the lower case form of “&”

You’re the first to ever bring up this symbol to me.

I always use that symbol for “and” while I’m scribbling notes, but I didn’t know it was an lowercase ampersand.

I never use it, but I’ve seen people who do.

I use it when I’m writing really quickly, but I usually write it more like a + than an upside-down 4.

When I was a kid the upper and lower case ampersand where still bieng taught in school , the upper case ampersand is supposed to be used in titles and names while the lower case is used for all other purposes.
When we wrote the alphabet in school we wrote all the letters in capital and lower case including the ampersand.
(I can still recall it bieng on our grammer tests in elementary school )
I know that the goverment officially dropped the ampersand from the US alphabet somewhere around the 1960’s but many schools in the seventies ,including my own still taught it.(gah, makes me feel so old saying that)
It just seems so frustrating to me to see the upper case ampersand used the wrong way all the time and not even have access to the lower case ampersand on my own keyboard.

I don’t know if any other schools taught this but when using cursive writting you were supposed to use
this version of the lower case ampersand.

If you were writting in print you were supposed to use this one.

I actually use that when I write swiftly, or just stick with and.
