{TUTORIAL} Setting up LINE Chat app without a smartphone

Hi everyone!

As you may know, the LINE chat app used by many guilds MUST be installed on a smartphone before it can work on the PC. This has proved problematic for several members of the Grizzlybairs Clan who play exclusively on PC. This should also help with those members who are concerned about the terms required when installing LINE on a smartphone

I’ve found a workaround which should allow these players to access LINE on the PC without having to set it up on a smartphone first.

—Requirements: This requires a basic understanding of how to install a program, a gmail account, and a cell phone capable of receiving texts OR an active facebook account. I know this will work on a PC, I have not tested it on a Mac. The process should take less than half an hour, so make sure you have enough time.

—Disclaimer: I have had no problem with any of the programs used in this tutorial, but you should always do your own due diligence before downloading any program from the internet.

—How To
First step – Go to http://www.bluestacks.com/ and install Bluestacks on your PC, Bluestacks is an android emulator (Installation and setup takes a little time)
2nd step – Open Browser in Bluestacks, Navigate to www.line.me
3rd step – Click Download for Android, it will ask which program to use, select Play Store
4th Step – Play Store will open, you will have to login to your Google account or create a new/dummy account, but you need to be able to verify the email so write down a password.
5th Step – Once you get in to the Play Store, Line should be up (if not search for it) – Click Install
6th Step – Line will install, its a little slow to load once its installed, so be patient, do not refresh or try to navigate until it loads
7th Step – It will ask you if you want to create a new account…click yes. It will ask you for credit card info, click skip, you can bypass this step
8th Step – It will ask you to agree to the terms/conditions, click yes/agree
9th Step – The next step is verification, you have to link to facebook (you can use a dummy account if you choose), or confirm a text message (you don’t need a smartphone, just a number you can get texts on)
10th Step – Once you verify your number or FB account you should be able to access LINE on Bluestacks
11th Step – With line open in Bluestacks, click the “More” tab and look for “Settings”
12th Step – In Settings, click Accounts, then click “Allow Login” – this is what lets you use the regular pc version
13th Step – THEN, you can either continue to use line in bluestacks, or, for convenience, open your regular browser and download the windows version from www.Line.me and login using your user/pass
Final Step – Search for friends, and get on LINE!

—Additional Notes:
It may be advisable to check the settings for Privacy and set your Line ID before switching to the Computer version, because it is a bit more difficult to navigate the settings in than the Android version.

Your USERNAME is NOT Generally the same as your ID, be sure you set your LINE ID so you know what it is and you can give it to others to find you on LINE.

The PC version is more limited than the Android version – you cannot check notes or see albums, and you can’t do inline stickers. You can however, use all the basic chat functions LINE offers.

I believe you should be able to uninstall Bluestacks once you install and login to the Windows version of Line, but I have not tested this step.

Other users have added additional emulator information below for Linux or Windows.

Thanks for putting this up! I had some problems with bluestacks programme before, so I have used an alternative :Handy Andy.
I thought I would post an alternative here.
Here are the steps:

-Make a facebook account if you haven’t
-Download the android emulator so you can run android on pc here and pick the free version
-Install it and start the emultor by selecting the shortcut with a blue robotic icon (andy)
-When you run the android emulator, a google message will ask you to login or make a new account.
-Make a google account if you haven’t or simply login with an existing account
-The program will do some updates, so wait a moment
-Now you should be in the menu
-On the bottom right you will see a shopping bag with a “play” arrow on it, click on that icon
-On the upper right you will see a white magnifying glass, click it
-Search for line and get the first hit (LINE: Free Calls & Message)
- Install this app
- Open the app and link it to your facebook account
- Now go to upper right and select the tab “more”
- Select settings
- Select Accounts
- Select the upper option “Email Account Registration” and complete this registration.The email/password you use will be needed.
- Now you can close the emulator and start up the official Line app PC version
- Just login with the email+password you have created within the emulator

Just a heads up PC line does have its problems though.

- No system chat notifications (ie. can’t see when a member joins)
- Unable to view notes/timeline.

I would suggest using genymotion if your looking for a responsive emulator (note this emulator can be quite complex)

Because you have to make an account on a smartphone first.

This isn’t PC LINE though. This is a mobile emulator, so it has all the functionality of your mobile app, except its usable on the PC.

Also for any Linux users I recommend using Android emulator thru genymotion (takes some effort, but works ok). LINE can be also run using wine, but its very buggy.

dont know if its been said but cba to read all the messages, you dont need a mobile to receive a text for that to allow line to work. just connect via facebook

Thanks a lot Rygard!! Line works on PC now without having to use a phone. So if anyone else wants to use Line but can’t because of phone restriction, just use Rygards guide. It’s flawless.

@Cornsamurai This is a guide about setting up a line account. I am just pointing out that IF your using PC line your not going to get the mentioned features.

Is it enough to install that emulator and run LINE via it?

Force restart bluestacks using the notification tray and see if it persists again. (right click tray icon to restart)
