So looking at chameleon, what is the right class pick for him? Obviously he wants to go into dungeons since he meets any element need. Trying to think both for now and what would be good long term. He still needs a LOT of growth before I can evolve mine.
Defender maybe? So as to have a matching element defender available in any dungeon?

Most people use him as Assassin. There are quite a few good defenders and defenders are good in any element, they rarely take direct damage which takes the element into account. The only fire assassin is the ape, which most want to use for growth camp and fire damage dealers are by far the best damage dealers. So chameleon would be a good fire assassin.

What makes fire damage dealers the best damage dealers?

Fire equip has the best boost to attack. For the most part you match equipment to the element of the pet. Ergo, fire pets deal the most damage.

How do I make a Chameleon a "fire assassin" other than giving it fire equipment? From the description, the Evolution Bonus seems to apply to Dungeon Events only, or am I overlooking something obvious?
I would think a fire assassin makes really sense in the Mountain, right? Isn't the Cat the better choice here? Especially given that the Event requirements (2x Wind Pet) are pretty low.
Chameleon seems to make most sense in Volcano and Water Temple, at least until the required Pets for the Events are complete. Otherwise I have no idea what I would do with the Chameleon but filling the gaps ...
How about using the Chameleon as Mage?

Chameleon has a change element button in its dungeon tab. I think its only accessible after evolving.

Thank you for the clarification. Fire assassin makes most sense to me as well.

Gonna feed the fire here, like I did when I stated UFO was a good Supporter (before Santa was a thing, it actually was!):
Blacksmith Chameleon.
You have Penguin, Cat, Lucky coin and Egg as specialist assassins, so they should be prioritized over Chameleon as an assassin, unless you need the element for dungeon events, which you don't, because you have Cat and Dog for Mountain and you need two defenders anyway, and you have Egg and anything else for Scrapyard assassins/wind events, and the other ones are passively achieved.
Also, if you use two assassins in Forest, and Forest team on Scrapyard, you already have 2 assassins for event and one of them is wind, so you just need a second wind (which you have, because it's a Forest team) and you get yourself a single team that can handle both dungeons with specialist assassins.
So if you want Chameleon assassin, you are comparing a neutral class Chameleon with another neutral class pet, as specialists are prioritized.
However, as Chameleon would be an element-specialized Blacksmith, the maximization between another neutral class pet and Chameleon would be made by having the second neutral pet as an Assassin and Chameleon as a Blacksmith, because you can change its element so it gains boosts on every item.
I mean, Fire assassin would be good, but Camel assassin would be JUST as good. However, Camel blacksmith would not be JUST as good.

That is true, but we also have already good blacksmiths. A fire fox with class level 30 gets 47.5% extra to crafting quality and 22.5% extra crafting speed compared to a fire chameleon for example. Even if both would forge neutral equip and chameleon gets the bonus from neutral, a fire fox would still be better for quality. It is similar with anteater.

@Duplete: I can follow your argumentation, especially since I have the Camel as blacksmith myself. Another option for a Chameleon blacksmith is to sending it to a dungeon instead of "wasting" the blacksmith bonus of Pegasus.
However, Chameleon as a fire assassin is still more appealing to me. Amongst other reasons, I have a long time to go before I can unlock or even evolve the Lucky Coin into an Assassin....
@Ryu: wouldn't it be better to send the Fire Fox to dungeons instead of crafting?

In the long term, blacksmiths are not useful in dungeons. There are no Depth 2 events that require them and only one D3 event.
I'm running 4 teams in D2 and have a single blacksmith (mole). One day I'll replace him with a book assassin and never look back (book will count as a blacksmith for the event).

Firefox is quite good in the volcano d3 dungeon, might help you to do it 1 difficulty harder than without. But even if you use the fox there, you can use him both ways. Let him stay in dungeons for most of the time but when you forge a new fire T3 equip, let it the fox do. You don't really need him for upgrading, reforging, gemming and such, which costs the most blacksmith time.

Sounds sensible. Thanks, Ryu.

It's accessible before evolving.

Not only is it accessible before evolving, but changing the element also changes which T2 material you use to evolve it. This can be useful if you have a huge stockpile of one material and not so much of others.

Book is more useful as a defender for Mountain than as a blacksmith for volcano.
