So ape needs a level 20 Ultimate crystal equipped, and whale needs a level 20 Ultimate crystal.
Do either (or both) of them eat the crystal when they evolve?
Im just making some long term plans on pets and this could be important someday, say in 2022 or so...

Whale consumes it, ape does not. Even if they both consumed it though, it'd be a good idea to do both in the same rebirth rather than have to build up your ultimate module all over again.

This used to be the case, but the whale no longer consumes it. I believe this change coincided with the change to allow non-integer numbers of crystals, so the game wouldn't have to figure out what to do about having less than 1 of your highest level crystal.

Just wanna confirm this personally. I expected whale to eat the crystal, but I evolved it just a few minutes ago and I still have my 1.36 Ultimate crystal and the equipped crystal is still here.

It used to eat the crystal, maybe it broke when the crystal system was changed to floating point.
