**~ ~ FACTION MATCH ~ ~**
_Updated: Now with Cloud and Infest teams—sort of…._

Another match idea to shake things up a bit for friendly PVP action: **FACTION MATCH!**
**FACTION MATCH** will work best as a private match.
Factions are the different coloured AI opponents you fight in campaign, Red, Orange, Green, Purple and Yellow——and Infest and Cloud, sort of.
_Rules:_
- Both players will agree to use only the items of a particular faction. A match could be RED vs. GREEN, or ORANGE vs. YELLOW, or RED vs. RED, or whatever the players choose to use.
- Each player is limited to use only the items that the faction of their choosing would use.
- **BUILD SEQUENCE** : A player must launch at least one of each of their Faction’s fighter types before a Stardock is built. At least one of each of the Faction’s Medium ship must be launched before a Starport is built.
_Example:_ Orange Faction must build at least one Fury bay, and at least one Miner Bay before building a Stardock. Orange must then build at least one Exhumer Stardock and at least one Scorpion Stardock before building a Starpot to launch their Goliath.
∴ Both Fighters —\> Both Mediums —\> Capital Ships.
_TECHS:_
Some Techs are limited to help maintain game balance.
- **Allowed Techs:**
Armor Plating, Expansion, Flash Charge, Heatsink, Mining Beams, Power Core, Faction-specific Round Techs.
- **Restricted Techs:**
Primer, Beam Doctrine, Plasma Mastery, Missile Doctrine, Battery, Supplies, Manufacturing, Fighter Rush, Carrier Rack, Base Canon, Repair Organ, Base Shield, non-Faction Round Techs, Freeze Boost, Acid Boost.
_Notes on techs:_
- Round techs are only available to that specific faction. It is recommended that the a Faction’s round tech be used if possible.
- No Faction uses EMP or Fusion rounds.
- Specific Ammo type mod techs like, Missile Doctrine, Beam Doctrine, and Plasma Mastery are not used by any faction. These techs should not be used by any as they can create an imbalance in play (e.g. “frameglitching” lasers, or homing SD.) Likewise, the Primer tech should not be used due to the long range of Lasers and Quad Missiles.
- Base Canons and Base Shield are only used by bosses. (You are not an AI boss.) Only the Cloud Faction has access to the Base Shield tech.
- Production techs like Battery and Supplies are not allowed. This is to balance playing field. (You are not a level 100 AI.)
- Only the Alien Race may use the Acid Rounds, Acid Boost, or Repair Organ techs.
- Only the Cloud Race may use the Freeze Rounds, Freeze Boost, or Base Shield techs.
- Players should fill in remaining tech slots with available techs that will best compliment their faction and give them the best chance of winning.
_SHIP & TURRET MODS:_
- All mods are allowed.
No one keeps a full roster of blanks (except maybe AllBlankFate, but we can’t all be him.) If you have a sweet sweet mod set, lucky you!
- _Notes on Carriers_: The two Factions with carriers, GREEN & YELLOW, use carriers that launch Rapiers and Hawks, respectively. While we are striving to closely emulate the Factions the AI uses, the random nature of the game adds an extra challenge to this. Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect for players to have an exact match for ship mods. All mods are allowed, including carrier bays fighter mods.
_MISC:_
- No faction gets both miners and reactors.
- Each faction uses only one type of Capital ship.
- Do not launch ships or use turrets or auxiliaries that your faction does not use.
- Do not use restricted techs.

Because players do not have access to items specific to these teams, like the Freeze-Laser, Spore Bay, or the Capital ships used by these factions, other ships have been chosen to substitute in. These choices were based on ships that are unused by other factions, like the Plasma Halo standing in for Cloud’s Blaster Halo, or Myrmidon standing in for Cloud’s medium Blaster-Ring ship. Pandemic and Biohazard seemed to fit Infest’s Acid theme already.
Building economies to launch Capital ships for these teams may be challenging.

Faction matches eh? cool, are units alowed to be modded unlike the blank ais? If so, i can imagine red player rushing out freeze sd cloak piranhas right out of the gate because no faction has microlaser. Also remember we humans don’t have those crazy ai buffs like extractors getting 2000 metal out of a small asteroid in two minutes. I feel bad for the person trying to get goliaths hammerheds from just these shitty extractors/ maybe exhumers (purple and orange players)..
On a side note, range range beam halo seems to rek everything with 4 primers, and glad fy as backup. Only problem is beam halos are expensive… are they the new meta? what other caps/ strats are currently op?

scratch that, i somehow forgot orange and purple have miners too. In this case, orange and purple would be op esPecially people with rof rof rof miners and pbay sd exhumers. purple hammerheads would also be good since only yellow have phalanx. And would matodons and legions be forced to only carry rapiers/ hawks/ piranhas?
remember high level ai have expansion tech too.

I have updated the FACTION MATCH post to mention techs and ship mods. Primers and munition techs, like Beam Mastery, have been banned. Hopefully banning Plasma Mastery will also limit the power of Pbay SD Exhumers, and SD in general.
I’ve added a line about ship mods and carrier bay fighter mods. Hopefully this will help to clarify things.

I want to ask this question to the competitive OE3 community: What is your favorite strategy currently when you go qm? How effective do you think that strat is? What extra mods would you add to units to improve this strat if possible, and how do people/ how would people counter this.
Im asking this question because this game is kinda dying (will be replaced by oe4 soon), and we should chronicle the metagame b4 its gone. Also I just got back into the multiplayer scene a few weeks ago (after raging at the carrier nerf) and I haven’t really got a chance to see the really op strategies- like facepalm op like the sapp sd shield jupe back in the day. Or maybe there aren’t any op strats anymore everything is balanced? For some reason I haven’t seen any really boss players on qm lately (no offense), like mebbi was on earlier today but I wasn’t able to play him. And I guess Fate just puts his head down and works on level100 campaign, never heard of him on multi.
Anyhow, currently my fave strat is range range beam halo plus 4 primers. SO GOOD! I build 3 reactors then 4 miners then cell everything once I reach 400 metal which is just right fr bh starport I use range rof miners and range range beam halo. If necessary I leav some miner bays and build a glad fy (rof sd) to mop up projectile caps. This strat has some problems on the short map where the opponent can rush me faster. Generally goli/legion/hh/trident is what people try to counter. lol my modded beam halo can outrange unmodded hh. I wish I had rof rof range lasers then I could turret rush bases short map with framegliched laser spam without need of constructor (primers). Otherwise if only my beam halo was shielded and my miners were rof rof rof only 3 miner bays would be neccesary.

And my other strat is Void Lance rush! Just range shield vl plus 4 primer and a few lasers/barricades/ repair turrets to clear out fighters and the vl onehits the enemy station on short map! Forgive me Deltaexploion lol.

I haven’t been playing PVP for a long while after reaching over 2600 rating back… in April 2015?
I then decided to reach for a high campaign level, and the goal was level 100 beaten. (moved it to beating 101, just to be sure) Which I reached maybe 2 months ago, and stopped. So the high score board at that time was Forex, then Rapidity, then me, as the top 3 campaigners.
I’ll get back into PVP eventually. :)

eww I hate jupiter. How about a beam faction, no faction uses just beams.
Turrets: microlaser, lasercannon, phalanx (they are beam)
fighters: cutlass, gladiator
Mediums: none, they use fighter yard
Cap: Beam Halo- hard to counter!
Special mods/techs: Beam doctrine, cloak mod at higher level (cloaked cutlass swarm…)
jk proclo nice idea, how about the jupe/ corv get fury mod at high level and plasma mastery for “plasma spammage”?

Memory leak for OE3?
I was playing a campaign match vs. clouds and had to step away from the computer for a bit. I paused the game, but ‘a bit’ turned into a few hours. When I returned I unpaused to complete the match, but it was running suuper slooow. I checked the system manager and it said that the firefox plugin, adobe shockwave flash was using 17.1 GB of virtual memory. That’s a lot of resources!
I restarted the browser and repeated the experiment, but just leaving OE3 open while not in a match as there was no buildup of memory usage.
Is there a memory leak or something? Could this explain why pvp is sometimes laggy?

when i close the lid of my laptop while in a paused campaign match, then open lid and come back, I have to reconnect with chat. Never had memory issue though.
Honestly do you think the odds of new update are very high? Maybe we can email or private message cwwallis? I think right now odds are pretty low.

Match Idea: **Beginner’s Match:**
For this match only the items a player begins with are used.
When starting as a new player in OE3, a player receives a limited selection of blank, unmodified Ships and Turrets, and no Auxiliaries or Techs. This match type will allow only these units.
Because Techs cannot be removed from the inventory, a limited selection of Techs will be available. All ship mods will be permitted.
TURRETS: Blaster, Double Blaster, Autogun
AUXILIARIES: None
FIGHTERS: Piranha and Mosquito. (NO MINERS!)
MED: Puma
CAP: None
TECHS: Expansion, Canon Mod (More tech options than you start with!)

To add some colour to this match version, some variants are possible. These variants will use the Beginner Match unit list above as a foundation. Players should agree on match and variant type beforehand

- Variant II: **Beginner’s Plus +**
Extra ships for extra flavour.
Adds: Micromissile, Knight, Mantis, Falcon, and Flash Charge tech to the above unit list.
All ship mods will be permitted (unless players wish to also use the All Blanks rule).
No new Auxiliaries or Capital ships.

Best puma rush wins neverbot. Either cloak freeze engine/ pbay or sd pbay engine/cloak puma (I have neither). Or best pbay rusher wins… Probably many freeze range blaster also. To disable puma.
And, um, neverbot or whoever out there, how do you turtle frameglitched trident? Norakta says trident has “easy” counter (he would know) but what is this? Only decent counters I can think of are 8 phalanx (one for each trident gun, when two stack up) or range range/ primers vl ( doesn’t work if trident is cloaked or on short map if opponent have base ahield.)
And how to counter cutlass cloak shield jupe? (turtle wise) Impossible! So people say beam halo ranged is hard to turtle, but I think these caps deserve the same or greater notoriety.

Im sorry sasuke but UR A NOOB.
Goliath is easy to counter with 50 energy insurance turrets (blaster and microlaser for example) and high energy production (at least 6 reactors). The orange beam can only oneshot the 50 energy turrets one at a time, and since you get a 25 energy refund for each turret, you can put one turret down per second without losing energy.
You have more than enough turrets with 6 reactors. Phalanx, freeze turrets, repair turrets and voidlance/biolab as backup.
Why don’t we consider the case of the PVP frameglitched trident, which is ACTUALLY hard to turtle (at least on short map). Or the rapier legion/.spartan spammage of green faction, the hardest to turtle in campaign

Only techs are limited, otherwise anything goes.
Mandatory techs: Each player must use at least one Expansion, Base Shield, and Base Canon tech. The fourth tech will be up to the player.
Variant: **FACTION BOSS FIGHT**
Using the manditory techs from listed above, but also with the Faction item list and Build Sequence rules from the Faction Match
(Both Fighters —\> Both Mediums —\> Capital Ships).
