Does anybody here still play it? I’ve been playing for about six years now and I’m finally getting back into the game.
If you play, what are some strategies, decks or cards you often use or would like to share?
Also what are some of your favorite sets? I’m not a very big fan of the Lorwyn, Shadowmoore and Alara blocks, personally, and I’m hoping that the next set is better. Onslaught and Mirrodin are my two favorite blocks, which have a lot of really great cards and introduced some original strategies.

I remember that. That used to be all I did. But I think my brother is selling all of out cards. And I don’t remember much anything about that game yet I use to play it.

The new design direction sucks.

Tell me more about that.
There are a lot of things about the last couple of blocks I really dislike, like the creation of planeswalkers and the new ‘mythic rare’ rarity.

i think i stopped playing after onslaught and i really have no idea about any of the new sets
i think a little after odyssey my most memorable deck was a threshold deck. it was all green and red, the green being all small monsters, powerups and then the larger creatures. the fire being instant damage
it wasnt very successful against the very good players, but boy did i love having an army of monsters with powerups to throw in at any time :P
id be interested to know if anyone had success with a 5 colour deck? i took a shot at it after apocalypse and it didnt work out too well, but i kept adding to it and modifying it as i went on and it turned out alright after a while. i mightve just gotten better at deckmaking

The Alara block is focused completely on 3+ color decks, so lately there have been a lot more 5 color decks. Sunburst decks are pretty cool.
Green Red decks are fun, but always seem sort of limited to me. It’s also hard to have a really good low-mana red green deck.

Knowing how to play helps.
Tell me more about that.

You mean the use of more powerful creature cards? I have noticed that, which is why I’m more of a fan of sets Mirrodin and back. I play with cards from all sets, however.

That, the real dumbing down of the game, the obvious pandering to little kinds, it’s kinda stupid actually.

I recommend it. Learn the rules first and figure out if you know anybody who plays that could help you out, because jumping in without knowing anything might end up sort of discouraging.
The 2010 core set might be good for you to start out with, as it just came out. Don’t buy any of the latest sets, as they won’t make any sense to you. ;P

I stopped playing during Time Spiral block. Its not that I got tired of it, because it really is a fantastic game. I just got tired of spending so much money on it.

Check out magicthegathering.com, there’s some great “newbie” guides that should teach you the ropes. Then go to Magicworkstation.com, and you can download a client that lets you build and test decks with any cards you want against other people. It’s not officially licensed, though, so you have to get the card sets and art elsewhere.

There’s this store I used to live buy that sold 200+ cards for $10.00 and 500+ cards for $20.00, of all rarities. It’s a great deal, but even then it feels like sort of a waste.

Yes, that was actually the reason why I only played with very few original cards. You can get high quality blanko cards for 7€ per 500 cards. (And low quality cards for half of this price.) Other people used index cards in security covers for cards. And spoiler-lists are available online.
But I actually stopped with Nemesis. I actually got bored at a certain point and many of my friends stopped playing. And I also don’t have the time for this kind of stuff any more and the game now target at a younger audience while I grew older.

I’m still a really big fan of Magic: The Gathering. It’s just fun to fool around with different deck ideas in search of ways to win faster. My favorite deck ever had no lands in it at all, using only free artifacts with mana effects to bring out a Goblin Charbelcher and torch the enemy.
There’s a really fun freeware deck-builder called Apprentice the lets you play Magic with your friends even if you can’t afford the prices for real cards.
