Seriously I find is so boring to watch somebody else play the game and then go and do the exact same thing myself. It’s understandable for some games, but 99% of games would benefit a lot more from a picture walkthrough (Pirate Defense and Pyro 2 come to mind), and some even a text walkthrough would suffice.

It all depends on the type of game.

Well I always think text or picture is best because it’s easier to look add where you were (I always try to use walktroughs as little as passble so this is easy to lose track of)

If you ask me, I like picture/text walkthroughs, and video walkthroughs. My internet isn’t very good, so sometimes videos don’t load very fast, but sometimes just describing what to do isn’t enough, and you need to see how it’s done. And sometimes when a game comes out, I have a tendency to watch a video walkthrough for, say, the first level, just to see how good the game is.

I don’t like them either, although i can understand why they’re ubiquitous. Why write up an extensive walk through when you can just film yourself winning in about 1/100th the time. They’re not ideal, but I don’t quite feel right complaining about them.

How about playthroughs people call walkthroughs? There’s nothing like watching someone stumble through a puzzle when he doesn’t know the solution, taking up 10 minutes rather than 30 seconds (example: Wooden Path).
For the most part, I prefer making text + screenshot/diagram instructions. At my old job, educating new users on our systems was easier that way. They’d get the visual aids from the pictures, but could read at their own paces. The ones really unfamiliar with computers felt videos moved too quickly if done at a normal pace, but felt stupid if things were slowed down too obviously.

Pretty much this. Context and relativity. What’s best for one game/scenario may not be so hot for another.

You can also search text walkthroughs. Video walkthroughs are completely unsearchable.

I like them a lot for the puzzle games I usually play. You just skip through the video until you see the appropriate level number on the screen. No spoilers except the ones you are looking for.
I hate using walkthoughs in general because that means you have failed so I don’t use them often, but if you are stuck on just level 23 in a 30 level game then you need that walkthrough to carry on.

I dislike them only because you need to pause it (all the time).
I prefer text walkthroughs as you can read it with time.
