Totem Destroyer hasn’t been uploaded to Kongregate yet, but if you’ve played it on NewGrounds, ArmorGames, or on some other site, you may have noticed the similarity. Both games are about destroying a certain number of blocks without some little guy falling to the ground. There are some slight distinctions, and of course the graphics and overall theme being different, which doesn’t really mean much. Before I go accusing one of copying the other, there’s a problem: DUI was submitted to Kongregate 5 days after Totem Destroyer was submitted to NewGrounds. That isn’t near enough time to make a game, so I’m left with a few theories: Both games were by the same author (which wouldn’t really make sense), two game makers were having a race to see who could finish a game like that the fastest (pretty far-fetched, but it could happen), or there is no tie between the two games and I’m just paranoid. I find it suspicious two games could be so alike, yet be submitted with only a 5 day gap. If anyone knows the story behind this or has their own theories to share, go for it.

I was going to make a game where you press a button and it gets mad and madder every time you do, but the next day I look at the newly submitted games to see one just like I had thought of! Great minds think alike I suppose and it may be the same thing in this case, although I liked DUI better with all of its physics based challenges and its cool ideas.

DUI is only similar at all to Totem Destroyer in the fact that you have to destroy blocks. in DUI there are moving blocks, Totem Destroyer, there aren’t. DUI you can move the little person, TD you can’t. Your paranoia has gotten the better of you.

Yeah, I did notice that but i just think its a coincidence. I cant believe people like DUI better than Totem Destroyer! I think the opposite. I have been waiting for Totem destroyer to come out for a while now. I wish they would put it on Kongregate!

dui sucks. totem destroyer rocks. totem destroyer has a STORYLINE, the levels are unlockable, the last level isnt a joke, (sort of) and the levels are harder, me and my friend spend an hour getting to level 13. dui: 10-20 mins

And?

Just because games are SIMILAR does not mean they’re stolen.

Stolen means the game is EXACTLY the same, but with slight changes like slightly different graphics or a different name.

DUI is almost completely unrecognisable from Totem Destroyer.

I’m not sure I even see a problem if it IS inspired by Totem Destroyer. There’s lots of much, much more obviously derivative flash games out there (played any tower defense or shooter games at all recently? What about that obvious advance war clone whose name I forget?)

You can’t even copyright a game mechanic. There’s nothing wrong with making a game based on someone else’s game, if you try to improve it or expand it… entire genres have been built around a single game and successive generations of refinements or variations on it. Without at least some games using others for inspiration, we’d all still be playing Pong.

(Also, the makers of Jenga called, they want their game back.)
