A reasonable topic on runescape for anyone who doesnt just want to flame page 3

Granted, Merlin’s Revenge is a ShockWave game. And given of how trusting I am of that whole codebase, I quickly shut down the browser. But apparently it is allowed, as given my “… sheer majority…” comment. (As an aside, the whole mess with the ShockWave being applied to more than just “ShockWave”, including “ShockWave Flash”, is deserving the marketing gurus that came up with one of the lower circles of Hell.)

I, personally, generally rate the ‘demo’ flashes low, unless the content they have is really worthwhile (akin to the free episode 1’s of shareware games of yore).

Given the all-coding languages, it’d be interesting to see in which direction they take it. I’m somewhat interested in SilverLight myself as a possible environment for gaming, once they straighten out the licensing, the codebase, and the programming environment for it. But as it stands, RuneScape seems more like a hack connecting their own website than something that feels ‘hosted’ by Kongregate. I do understand that online multiplayer requires someplace to act as the server, but the way it’s done is no different than an IFRAME tag. Now the fact that they’re selective of Java (another language I’m not too fond of, given that it systematically kept blue-screening my Win2K machine until I figured how to disable some of its features in a command-line fashion), with Runescape being the first addition (particularly as it already has its own ‘portal’ of sorts at its homepage) just feels ‘odd’. As more games get added that use Java, I’ll probably warm up to it, but it’s jarring compared to the general “gestalt” of the place we have here.

I know there’s a bit of complaining here, so I’ll try to provide something positive as an aside (constructive criticism, after all). Food for thought, re the expansions of languages: wonder if Kongregate can spin off a smaller version geared towards devices like smartphones. I believe I read that the IPhone isn’t well-adapted to Flash, but as they and similar products become more ubiquitous, with a standard multimedia format (JavaScript? Java? Flash?) being allowed, Kongregate could probably enter that realm as a portable portal.

i personally despise runescape, especially because of the immaturity many of its players seem to have. however, i don’t think that this much fuss needs to be made over it. i really don’t think that it’s going to affect kongregate in general that much, people will either play it and talk about it IN GAME CHAT, or no one will play it and it will continue to have the low rating it has.

Why? I keep hearing that but I don’t see a single good reason WHY.

stormwinds had 5 maps to unlock by paying, but it doesnt write PAY or FREE in every place like in runescape ^^
and demos get low rating anyways, i give them 1/5 or 2/5 :)

I haven’t played Runescape in recent years, so I could be wrong. However, at least from staring at the page you see from opening RS here you get 2x “Play for Free!” labels which are pretty informative for any new players, and a link labeled “Upgrade to Premium” for players that want the bonus content. That’s nowhere near obnoxious in my book.

All of you who hate RuneScape should just ignore it instead of flaming it; by trying to attack a game, you’re just being a bunch of whiny idiots that nobody’s going to listen to.

The solution is simple – if you don’t like a game, don’t give it even one thought. Why should you waste your time throwing your bullshit onto a great game?

Seriously. One of my comments for RuneScape got drowned out by who knows how many whiny morons?!? This was that the comment was btw:

Attacking a game is similar to attacking a brick wall with your bare hands. You get stressed that you can’t break it, but it’s essentially still there.

Honestly theres 3 problems I have with Runescape. Like many other ex-Runescapers the people who play it are generally awful. Take away the legions of scammers, idiots, 8 year olds, and new players who didn’t even make an effort to try it out and just wanted free stuff, and you would have a halfway decent p2p game. Next you have Kongregate promoting it (tsk tsk…I thought you had integrity) which feels like a stupid way just to make more money. If you want to play Runescape, go to Runescape.com. If you want an enormous selection of fun, free games, come to Kongregate. If you want the chat features of Kongregate, I’m sure there’s chat rooms out there devoted to the game. Finally I’m convinced that the forums will be flooded with “runescape this” and “runescape that,” or even worse, “selling X on RS.” This will utterly destroy any remaining insightfulness on the forums. Still, people should whine so much about it. If a guy wants to waste his life on Runescape, then brag about how good a game it is on the forums, let him do it. He’s an idiot. Just give the game a 1 star rating and walk away.

this is why RS does not belong on Kong. Kong Is intended to be a society of Homegrown Game Producers, Like the mmakers of “thing thing,” “sonny” (which needs to be moved to the RPG section, I mean, Jeez.) and “monsters den” If we give RS a place to put their game on kong, then that means they will recieve more views from people who havent heard of runescape than otherwise. Therefore they are recieving the benefits of advertising. That means, A Kong RS entry is FREE ADVERTISING, and should not be allowed.

there is a difference. NG and AG also host homegrown games, and homegrown games CAN NOT COMPETE with a game with an entire company of People working on it. Runescape has a community the size of WOW, if it wants to rake in some more people off of Kongregate they can afford to buy adspace like everyone else.

What was Runescape before it was big? Did they not also start out as a homegrown game that became more successful?

Runescape was originally made by two guys in a basement. With no funding.

Kongregate was orginally made by two siblings with rich parents. They have all the advantages. Kongregate should shut down to give smaller, homegrown flash websites a chance.
