I can’t justify spending 60 dollars on a game I already own with minor upgrades.
Sadly, some people can, so this trend will continue for years to come.

It’s actually more than minor upgrades. This feels complete in a way L4D never really did. I agree, though, wait till the price falls, and more importantly, the balance is fixed (right now, it’s really too difficult).

I guess I’m not seeing it. What’s wrong with the balance? I like the how the game as a whole is harder, for the most part. . . When the AI isn’t bugging out. (Chargers walking up to us and meleeing? Spitters missing? Bleh.)
I really can’t say much of the game, as I’ve only done Dead Center one and a half times with friends. I’m waiting for my friend to get Steam working before I explore anything else and learn the game. From what I’ve played, though, it’s still fun. The level designs seem much more balanced, in co-operative and competitive aspects, though other campaigns I’ve yet to experience may say otherwise. The lengths are also fairly good, though the mall map leaves a bit to be desired, as it feels a bit bland and tunnel-ish.
Glad I went with some friends to save a good deal (Like, $25?) on the game. I still think the sequel came way too soon, and after seeing quite a few little bugs or annoyances that add up, feel it’s a tad rushed. . . But as a whole, I can’t really complain or approve of it yet until I play more.

But then you have things like jockeys that don’t dismount when you hit them with melee (unlike, say, most every special infected), and they way that they jump – you can’t stop them midjump at all.
Things like that. The shotgun damage also needs to be upped a little bit – they made the cone of fire on the combat shotgun too wide, so the effective DPS is too low in the situations where you really need it – the rifles are universally better.

Eh, I’m not the biggest fan of this. (Note, it has nothing to do with any of the L4D2 Boycott reasons)
First, the survivors have no personality. Mostly.
Nick seems…Interesting, I guess. Has a possibility for character development, but that’s about it.
Coach is your average stereotypical football coach, and has little personality besides the ‘leader’.
Ellis is the average guy with no personality other than being foolhardy and a tiny bit witty sometimes. (That “kill all sonsabitches. thats MAH ’FFISHUL ’NSTRUKSHUNS” line was horrible, IMO. Chocolate Helicopter is way better.)
Rochelle…Eh…She could just be a gray box that follows you around without saying anything, and I don’t think anyone would notice.
Gameplay is mostly the same. Yeah, sure, the melee weapons are cool, but they get old. Guns…Cool at first, but shooting a zombie is only fun so many times with each gun. Not to mention the fact that the campaigns would probably get pretty boring pretty fast if you aren’t playing with friends, which I can’t do hardly ever due to scheduling complications. I prefer multiplayer games that don’t focus so much on co-op, but I love the additional feature when it’s presented.
The graphics are pretty good; I like how they upped the gore factor from the original. It’s just so satisfying to smash a zombie with a pan or shoot them with a shotgun. Really, though, this appeal will only last so long.
Granted, I don’t have the game, and I only played a little over at a friends (and the demo, which I played through several times), but judging from my experience with the previous game combined with the limited time I’ve had with this just tells me it’s not my type of game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well made, and I can completely see how co-op fans could love this game (Again, I want to love these types of games, but never have anyone to play with due to a lot of my friends being overseas and having different timezones.), but it just doesn’t seem like the type of game I’d enjoy. I strongly prefer either a single-player experience, multiplayer experience, and sometimes single player with co-op, depending on how much its ‘forced’ on you.
I’d much rather be picking up Assassin’s Creed 2 or Forza 3 this holiday season over this, but if I ever see it in the bargain bin a few months down the road, I’d surely pick it up.

They could have easily updated LFD1 with this stuff.
Not feasibly, considering the development costs. I don’t blame Valve for trying to recoup the investment they made.

Valve is swimming in cash from Steam, they could have absorbed the cost.
It’s a free market. Microsoft could have given away windows 7 free to everyone, but should they have? No. In the same sense, even though Valve could have survived giving it away, capitalism isn’t about subsistence. People aim to flourish.

If you consider getting yet another Lamborghini for “Big” Gabe Newell ‘aim to flourish’ then so be it. I call it excessive profits.
And I say you’re asking for something for nothing. L4D2 represents an entire year of development and millions of dollars invested. It is completely unreasonable to ask for that for free. A discount for L4D1, maybe. But getting it for free is outrageous, especially given the massive scope of the changes that were made.
Also, for the record, Gabe is a pretty charitable fellow, and I don’t think he drives a Lamborghini.

We didn’t want a totally different game in the first place. Valve promised that steady updates that would modify the original game in incremental ways and would change the game after we bought it.

And then they found out that the L4D code wasn’t as modular as it needed to be (like TF2 is) and couldn’t easily implement all of the stuff they wanted to do, so they went back and rebuilt the engine to support the modular code, built five new campaigns, added 3 special infected, 2 game modes, and updated all of the art assets in one year.

Its totally not minor upgrades. Twice as many zombies with twice the level of detail with twice the gibbs for half the rendering cost. Modular code structure that allows for quick and easy implementation (eg patching) of new material. Better lobbies (4v4!). Over 20 maps that are expertly made. New crescendos (retrieving a six pack of coke for a pawn shop owner? Who’s idea was that? I love it!). Director controlled lighting and weather. Direct access to the director for mappers. Mappers can now request from the director how angry he is as well as set his anger level directly, this is not possible in L4D1 which forces mappers to take things into their own hands.
And $60? What are you doing buying it on the X-360-Bucks? Sheesh. Get it for the PC (and all your patches will be free). Because I totally paid $45 for my copy (no, the baseball bat had no influence on me).

You’ll settle for worse? I think Valve wanted the opportunity to improve their game, even if you don’t =/

I don’t understand, that’s the length of an average short review, isn’t that what you wanted?

Okay…since you seem to think you’ll learn more about the game by some arbitrary number than by people’s detailed opinions…
I give L4D2 a “3”.
