After countless of hours, you reach a house. The snowstorm has freezed your bag of food. As you enter the tavern and sit down on a chair, an old man speaks to you.
“Are you one of these miner we expect?”
You slowly nod.
“Welcome in Bongbyen. I hope you are aware, that if you think you will feel good here, you’re gonna have a bad time. I am Trefis, the innkeeper. I will provide you with a bed and food, but we need people like you, to get the ores out of the mine 300 meters from here. But now go to sleep. In the morning, you will meet with the others.”
You go up in your room, and immediately fall to sleep. Good Night.

Aside from that, for the setting – I’d personally use a not-quite-modern setting, but a realistic one, then have it peel away to reveal fantasy elements.

Dear Diary, yesterday I finally arrived in Bongbyen. After my ship arrived here, I had to make an long walk, at least 3 days with foot to this so-called backwater. But the mine is what’s interesting here. Scandinavian people refuse to work in it, because they say once Loki himself used it and hid his monsters in here. I don’t know how these people survive here with this stories. I’ll meetup with the others in ten minutes, so I have to go now.

A longsword, a drill, a pickaxe, a hammer and a torch.

But if we’re gonna cooperate to survive, someone bring along a microwave oven!

I take a torch, a small bundle of TNT, a blasting cap and whatever other explosive device things, a sieve, a pickaxe, a small utility knife and a bucket. I carry everything in the bucket other than the TNT.

I take a First Aid Kit (or the 17th century equivalent), an Oil lamp (and a means to light it), a pick-axe, 15-feet of rope, a multi-purpose knife, a waterskin, and a sandwich.

I’ll take a bucket as well. Wear it as a helmet.
