Event VII: Centipede Game

In this event you’ll again be in 9 groups of 2. This event ends in about 24 hours from this post. You must whisper me your action. This event does not have the conventional points system, and the groups were randomly done using random.org.

You have two options every time: to take (whisper me T) or to do nothing (whisper me N). The number of points available to take will begin with the first player (on the left) at −1. If that player then takes the −1, that’s the end of it. However, that player can choose to do nothing, and then the other player (second, on the right), as each time the number of points decreases by 2 (or increases by −2), will have the option to take −3 points or do nothing. If the second player takes it, that’s the end of it. If the second player doesn’t, the first player has the option to take −5 or do nothing. This keeps on going up to −7, −9, −11, −13, −15, −17, … −∞. Although, of course, you don’t want something like −∞ or more realistically something like −91 if that’ll give you negative points. Remember that to win you need exactly 0 points.

The person that loses gets −1 point if they whispered something, and +5 if they did nothing.

Example 1: A whispers me NNNNNNT, B whispers me NNT. The first time, A does nothing (at this point it’s −1), as does B (−3); the second time A does nothing (−5), as does B (−7); the third time A does nothing (−9), but B takes it (−11). B gets −11 points. A gets −1 point as he/she whispered me something.

Example 2: A whispers me nothing, B whispers me NT. The first time, A does nothing (−1), as does B (−3); the second time, A does nothing (−5), but B takes it (−7). B gets −7 points. A gets +5 as he/she whispered me nothing.

Example 3: A whispers me T, B whispers me NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNT. The first time, A takes it (−1). A gets −1 point as he/she took it and B gets −1 as he/she whispered me something.

That isn’t how it works. Only one of you can take it in the end, and that’s whoever says “T” first. So unless you are willing to sacrifice yourself to let pika win…

Honestly, the best way to go through with this challenge, IMO, unless you have a partner you can trust with your life, is “T”. A cake in hand is better than a pie in the bush.

True. I wouldn’t pass up an easy win if your partner has a decent chance to not respond.
EDIT: A says T, B says a huge amount of Ns before T to get to 0, or negative 5 (not responding gets that to 0) or anything close to 0, since if A responds, you lose anyway. But If A knows you do this, A can get a win…

Event VIII: Succinct Game

In this event you’ll be in 6 groups of 3. This event ends in about 24 hours from this post. You must whisper me your action.

The difference from the above diagram and the game is that the points will be negative. The first player (on the left of the “Groups” section below and red in the diagram above) must whisper me T or B. The second player (in the middle and green above) must whisper me L or R. The third player (on the right and blue above) must whisper me l or r. Each outcome will give you a different result for each of you.

If a player doesn’t whisper, then the first option will be chosen. I.e., if the first player does nothing the option will be T; if the second does nothing the option will be L; and if the third does nothing the option will be l. The player who does nothing will get +5 points regardless of outcome.

Example 1: first player whispers me T, second whispers me R, third whispers me r. Outcome: (1, 4, 9). The first player gets −1 point, the second gets −4 points, and the third gets −9 points.

Example 2: first player whispers me B, second whispers me R, third whispers me l. Outcome: (9, 6, 5). The first player gets −9 points, the second gets −6 points, and the third gets −5 points.

Example 3: first player whispers me B, second whispers me L, third whispers me r. Outcome: (7, 4, 7). The first player gets −7 points, the second gets −4 points, and the third gets −7 points.

Event IX: Chicken Game

In this event you’ll be in 9 pairs of 2. This event will end in about 24 hours from this post. You must whisper me your action.

You’re a chicken, along with your pair. You made a wee cart with your pair and you decide to test it. However, you’re both having a nice chat on the cart, and all of a sudden you realise you have a house ahead. You can decide to swerve or go straight. If you both swerve, you both get +0 points. If you go straight and your pair swerves, you get −1 (because you did nothing and relaxed instead) and your pair gets +1 (because they had to do extra work). Viceversa also: if you swerve you get +1 if your pair instead goes straight. If both of you decide to go straight you crash into the house and both get +10 points.

If your pair does nothing, they will be swerving and they will get +5 regardless of outcome. Consequently, if two people in a pair do nothing, they both swerve and get +5 and +5.

Example 1: A whispers me “Swerve”, B whispers me “Swerve”. They both get +0, +0.

Example 2: A whispers me “Straight”, B doesn’t whisper me anything. A gets −1 and B gets +5 because he sent in nothing.

Example 3: A whispers me “Straight”, B whispers me “Straight”. They both get +10.
