I am wanting to know the recommended resolution for games to submit to Kongregate. I’m thinking about 800×600 or would that be too big?

Thanks,
Shane.

thats typically too big for most people’s browsers. The RPG I’m making is going to be set at 650 × 450 and that’s pushing it.

800*600 is I think the standard. It’ll fit, only ~ 1% of computers are still using it as their resolution, and I’m suspecting they’re not the sort of people that come to Kong.

Take the screen resolution of your basic user (Assume 1024×768 min). Browsers take up some vertical space, and so does the taskbar (Windows). My taskbar (Windows Aero) is 36px tall and my browser top (Firefox, optimized) is 62px tall. That brings us from 768 down to 670, and loads of people have extra retarded toolbars up there, so 600 is a reasonable height limit.

Browsers seldom detract from screen width except with about 20px of scrollbar, so even in the case of 1024px (even that is rare these days, right?), you’re fine. If kong chat needs to stick out there, I reckon it’s about 300px wide, leaving 700px of wiggle room, but it doesn’t harm gameplay to scroll left and just cover up chat.

I guess 800×600 is the biggest size that could fit on all presently working monitors that people use to play Kongregate games. I have here a 1366×768 monitor, so I can’t fit a more than 600 high SWF in browser window. (F11 helps, but not many people know of it)

“The safest resolution is 640×480... To optimize sale value, never go smaller than 500×400 or larger than 700×550.” is what FGL says.

Man, all of your peep’s info is out of date. Like FOUR YEARS out of date.

85% of the internet browsing public is using a screen resolution greater than 1024×768. 63.4% have a screen resolution measuring 900 pixels high, or higher.

And for people who want a source:

http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp

So yeah I tend to publish 800×600 Would like to publish 800×600, but Kongregate has a cap of 700 on width I usually publish 600×500 or 700×550, though I sometimes make it smaller if I have intensive rendering.

I am surprised nobody mentioned the 700px width cap on Kong yet.

That’s because it’s 800px.

Back in MY DAY, Kongregate had a 700px width cap.

It was 700px last time I uploaded a game, heh.

Bear in mind that people aren’t generally going to give over 100% of their screen space to timewasting sites like this. You can’t rely on having the user’s full resolution. 640×480 is enough for most games and will not scroll for anyone.

I almost always have FF maximized when playing a flash game.
