Welcome on board (and to Kong's developer community) Jospeph!
Don't worry about joining "late". There is definitely more than enough time left. I'd say 6 months is the mark where things could become hectic for large challenges. Especially in combination with people who have other obligations. But besides that... everybody chooses their own challenge. So even joining in December won't be a problem. :)
Looking forward to what you have in mind and good luck with your challenge!

Hello,
I would like to join challenge.
I always wanted to make a game so I started this month developing a cosmic-civlization-conquest game.
Should I update log of changes here or can I create new topic to post there updates?
Best regards

It is much recommended to create a new thread for your updates, and good luck!

Hi there dremearofcode!
That's totally up to you. If you make your own thread you make it easier for other people to follow your progress. So I'd say go for that solution.
Good luck with your project! Looking forward to your progress.

Count me in.
I've wanted to be a professional dev ever since I was six and, although this goal is surely attainable, I've yet to seriously pursue this dream for fear of failure. This is truly the fault in my personality - the same applies to my music and all other creative endeavors.
It's a mentality that equtes intellectual ability with self-worth that keeps me from pushing myself. What an irony! One which may become tragic if left unchecked.
I've recently realized these things about myself, which is why I've decided to begin the struggle against my own incompetencies - for the last two weeks I've devoted **all** of my free time to game development. I've already made significant progress. Although my descision sprouted up from my own consiousness, separate from this community, seeing this thread has compelled me to share. A bit of accountability will do me some good anyway.
Now for specific goals, all of which contradict my current habits:
* Begin moving away from flash and towards HTML5/JS > Releasing a game on that platform
* Commit to a project spanning more than 10 days, preferably more that a month
* Create a game featuring my own music
* Resurrect and finish *one* of my ideas which I had given up on.
These are fairly modest goals, three of which I am set to achieve with one project. If you're an OG GiTD'er, you might remember my project "collectron". Welp, I intend to finish that project and meet the above goals.

Welcome! Always great to read inspiring posts like yours. :)
> for fear of failure
That's a beast. But like all monsters it can be slain with the right weapons. One of the cool things I've heard with regards to this was something along the lines of:
*It's not only about achieving a goal but also about becoming a different person by doing so.*
And you are going to become a better version of yourself no matter the outcome. Besides that your resistance to try out new things will get lower.
Also failure is a great opportunity to figure out who you really are and how much you want what you are after. Everyone can push forward when things are easy and working out as planned. But once you bash your nose on a wall you have one of the rare opportunities to take a *real* look into a mirror. So even from that point of view you still win. Definitely better than just sitting on a couch. :)

I'm really proud of you folks and your work. And I'm very happy to see people still joining our little journey of improvement. :)
With all that being said:

My goal for the *"2017 Game Developer Challenge"* is to complete the production of *"Fast and Chairious"*. More details about current progress in [here](http://www.kongregate.com/forums/4-game-programming/topics/750652-2017-challenge-fast-and-chairious).

Participant number 23 has joined our ranks. Illuminati confirmed!

Welcome HectorFV!
*Fast and Chairious* is a fun name. Could be the sort of detail that distinguishes a great game from a good game. Very nice ambitious goal to go for one of the Kongregate classics. :)
Good luck with your project! Looking forward to your results.

I'd say I'm at least fairly decent with game design. (Okay, I can't make a turnbased RPG without spaghetti-coding the whole thing into one big mess, but I digress.)
Something I know I need to improve on though is music. It's a hard thing to judge improvement on though because it's basically freeform art. Well, better synching and the ilk I suppose, but still.
Not sure how I could upload soundtracks in particular though. Maybe just flat out through youtube?

That's exactly what shay does. And it works pretty well. You can check out his [challenge progress report](http://www.kongregate.com/forums/4-game-programming/topics/703676) to get a bit of inspiration on this topic.

I guess that's true. Especially if you think about how different taste in music can be. But I also think that when you *do* things you will get better at doing them than when you *don't* do them. Also even if you get stuck on your quality level (which I don't think will happen) you can still become better at the level you are at. So for example you could try to improve the time it takes you to make a song/ sound effect.
Often you start to see things you haven't seen before after you do your first steps. So in case you have absolutely no idea how to measure your progress my advice would be to simply commit to a certain amount of time per week. Clearly that's not optimal but it's a starting point. And over time you might get better ideas for measurable goals.

Didn't even see that actually- looks pretty nice, and it's a good point. Experimenting is often the best way to learn things.
I'll probably just have to think on it.

Took a bit, but I think I got an idea.
I'll work on music as I don't do that enough.
Going off of some of what Shay has done,
I'll do what they're doing and try to upload one song a week onto youtube with the ideal goal to spend at least SOME time (15-30 mins. Depends on work and other obligations.) per day learning and making more music.
I'm already expecting our soundtracks to be totally different as I use FL Studio as my sound engine. (I like it but it's price tag will definitely be a turn off to some people.)

Welcome to the challenge Bluemysterywolf!
If you make a progress report (which I as always highly recommend) let me know, so I can add it to the overview.
Otherwise good luck with your project! Looking foward to your results.

JimGiant, You can use git for storing the files and versionin them. It should help to not lost all the data and go back and forward in file history

Okay, half the year is over...
progress:
3 (5?) GiTD's participated in: 0 (or one because i am making the game for it now)
1 GiTD won: 0 (I hope)
A game that reaches 3 stars or more after leaving "under judgement" phase: NOT YET
a game that reaches 40K plays: NOT YET
Learn a coding language: In the process of learning html5
Anyway, since it's summer, may be the best time to accomplish the projects... but due to school, I may only participate in 3 or 4 GiTDs.. all for the best!

Admittedly I haven't been working on mine as much as I should.
I've been looking into ways to get some cash on the side and learned that writing stories is an option...and considering I'm a better writer than I am sound designer, and since there's only so many hours in a day (Less because I love sleep. Like. A lot.) I've worked more towards writing.
That and FlashDevelop. It's as confusing as heck, though...

I just hit a major milestone with mine. I just finished my game Epic of Eduardo using the framework I had started late last year.
