Hi guys, great post! I’m new to flash game development and those resources posted are really fantastic. As said before by alexthagrate79, it’s kind of possible that my carrer choice will be flash too.
See ya.

Is there a max width and height for games in Kongregate? Does that depend on the resolution of the user’s monitor? I couldn’t find that information anywhere.

700 is the max width. The max height would be recommended to be about what you can fit in a 17’ screen.

Considering a 1024 × 768 screen resolution:

  • • 700 × 700 gives a square, probably won’t fit in the browser.
  • • 700 × 525 gives a 4:3 aspect ratio, like a normal monitor.
  • • 688 × 387 gives a 16:9 aspect ratio, a “wide screen” game.

Yay. I tried the 30 day tutorial way long ago, and never even thought
of trying to make games. I always thought flash was mostly animating stuff, and when I tried it I wasn’t exactly…..good….. I drew a line and got it to sit there for hours on end =O But I have flash and game maker, and my own site, so I’m good for now…..for now….

lol

This is all good for Flash 8 and AS2, but what about AS3 tutorials? I can’t seem to find any.

The sites listed have some AS3 tutorials.

I’ve checked most of them… and they only go up to AS2…

But, I’ll check it again.

EDIT: had to dig for a while, but I found it, nevermind…

I’d like to point out that there’s the source of several fun games the author has made on flecko.net (including Madness Interactive!). If you can’t quite see how all the tutorials fit together to make a game, try digging through those.

For those interested in Tower Defense games, here’s a short tutorial that can get you started (though is certainly far from a full game):

http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2007/10/06/make-a-flash-game-like-flash-element-tower-defense-part-1/

Kirby: I think Director produces .exe’s, not .swf’s. You have to use .swf’s if you want to work on Kongregate, so it has to be Flash.

It’s a free, open-source “game” that shows you a lot of the basics of programming, timing, and user interaction. Check out this Game Sheep tutorial for both online full commented explanations and to download the .fla file.

Nice. Thanks for posting this, Phoenix – Was really useful. Easy to understand and learn from!

Is there a really STRUCTURED tutorial somewhere out there? I checked the sources provided here but most sites just have tons of articles on various aspects of Flash programming, but not really a point to start with. What I’d like is a tutorial which provides a good structure for learning, starting with the very basics and working your way up to the various different possibilities of Flash programming. Does anyone know one such tutorial?

Another question:
Which is the best free programming environment? Adobe Flash and Adobe Director are both too expensive.

FlashDevelop is the best flash programming environment around, as far as I know.

If you’re looking for a structured tutorial, try buying a book on Actionscript. They will usually provide more in-depth learning.

Good post, I was thinking about picking up “Flash Game Programming For Dummies” to get me into flash developing, now I definitely will.

I’ve put this one on lots of these threads – it’s really good and structured, though noone else seems to have found it – Foundation Flash

I have no clue what to do… I went to check out the free one and I have 2.0 but I have no clue what to do next…

Anyone else know of any other Actionscript 3.0 books/tutorials? I’m having a hard time finding one that “clicks” for me. I would love to know what the new Actionscript is capable of

Update: I found out that I actually had a book that explained a lot of Actionscript 3.0’s quirks: Actionscript 3.0 Animation by Keith Peters. I’d recommend it for an intermediate coder (or higher) because it mostly covers drawing and animation, plus I’d have another book to supplement it.

However, its briefings on Actionscript 3.0 made perfect sense to me, coming from a C++ and Actionscript 2.0 background. Even if I don’t touch Actionscript 3.0 ever again, the book contains some really nice algorithms that can apply to just about any programming language.

I have a question me and cosmo200100 are making a game, and were doing the same amount of work, can we both become developers?

The Pixel2Life link gives a 404; it’s now at http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials/adobe_flash/ due to the ownership change.
