http://www.moock.org/lectures/introToOOP/ That is one of the best OOP tutorials/guides I have ever seen without needing to but a book. It covers practically everything about OOP in an understandable format with analogies and more. Please add to list. |

From the first post …
You should mention Flex Builder 3. It’s a very popular IDE, released by Adobe, and may be more suitable to game development than Adobe Flash CS3 as it focuses more on ActionScript and less on the “stage.” I’m unsure of the pricing in general, but it’s easy to obtain a copy for free if you are a student (fill out a small application and then e-mail them a scanned picture of your student ID, wait a few days, and voila). Here’s where to go to get Flex Builder 3 Professional for free if you are a student.. it is an official site created by Adobe, not some “free offer” site: |

I didn’t know you could use director to sumbit a game to this site. |

I thought i would point out you can “sort of” point and click make flash games with sploder.com |
|
|
What do you need other than Flashdevelop to start making games? I downloaded flashdevelop and typed in a couple lines of code to test it but when I click play movie it tells me that I need to have FLASH IDE downloaded. I thought the point of flashdevelop was to not pay $700 for the Flash IDE?? Can someone please tell me what I’m missing. A shout or whisper to me would be great. |

I should definitely mention it, yes. However, I don’t see it as being more suitable for game development than the Flash IDE. |

Flash hurts my brain. For once, I want a guy to stand over me saying, “Listen retard, this is how it’s done.” |

I can’t afford Flash. Are there any free tools? There are free tools available. They can sometimes be more difficult to set up or use for certain tasks (especially for newbies), but at least they are free. Check http://www.osflash.org/projects for a list of all the free tools. FlashDevelop is a great tool to start with, if you are looking for something free. read? |

As I’ve seen on FlashDevelop, it says its important to:

Backing up customized user files is (I think) for those who have already FD and set up the environment the way they want. You don’t need the debug version of the Flash player to compile your stuff, but if you want to debug it (which is, you know, a must), you will need it. FlashDevelop doesn’t come with a version of the Flash player, and the normal version doesn’t support debugging. Similarly, FlashDevelop doesn’t include the core libraries Adobe provides – which is why you’ll need the SDK. Unless, like, you plan on writing those classes yourself (Hint: not a good idea). |

FlashDevelop is way harder to use than regular Flash. So, I want an easy alternative to Flash or Director. Anyone can find? |

Hey guys. I’m really interested in starting to make games. Anyone care to point out a FRIGGIN’ BASIC, NOOB tutorial. I mean from “open program” to “draw character”. Something to get me familiar with the IDE. I code in VB.net and C# but I have no idea about the commands in ActionScript. I can understand the logic behind it, I just to know the right keywords, and know my way around the IDE. I hope someone can answer me. :) |

Closest to real Flash free alternative. It is pretty old, but it is best easy choice you have for now. They are working on Openswif by the way. |

www.tutvid.com has some interesting tutorials |

I recently bought Flash as part of this big Adobe package our church used to upgrade it’s office with Macs (ugh). |

Seems that’s more a matter of personal taste. Flex is, according to Adobe, geared toward programmers with experience in other languages (this is the reason the stage, which to me normally just gets in the way, is non-existent in Flex). More suitable for game development, I think so, as it takes you straight to the ActionScript and avoids features that were originally meant for creating animations. And being free (for students at least, though I’d imagine the price to be low for the outside world if they’re giving it away at all) is a nice bonus. I’ll admit that I haven’t had the time to work with Flex Builder at all yet (I hope to find time after I finish my current C++ project), but based on what I’ve read, it seems an overall better choice, so it’d be helpful to at least mention it in your tutorial, IMO. |
