Dragon, are you sure he’s ready for a fan? Fans have long been known by professional artists to be one of the more difficult objects in the world to accurately draw. Fans are everywhere. Since the human eye is so used to seeing fans, we can easily spot the mistakes one makes in an illustration of one. When learning to draw fans, it’s common practice to start with something a little less extreme. There are books written on this. From my intense studies on the issue, I’d like to suggest a Dyson bladeless fan. Although I’d still recommend starting with something much simpler, as the Dyson is still a fan, if you’ve got to draw a fan, the Dyson is the way to go. Here’s one I have been working on the past few years. It’s near completion but not quite there yet as I’m able to look it over for a while and spot tiny imperfections (which are corrected over a span of days).
I started off drafting a pencil sketch. After many mountains of crumpled paper later, I finally had something worth scanning. The rest is done in many layers of Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects.

If there were a lifetime achievement award for fan illustrators, it’s safe to say that ItsaMario would have at least one of them.
