Transparency tool?

I’ve been making a Banjo-Kazooie Flash game with Stencyl, but I need help with the characters in it. I need to make transparent edges on my art so it won’t look like it’s in the shape of a square.

If there is no transparency tool that you have to pay for (e.g. Photoshop’s), then could someone possibly tell me the name of an art tool that will let me change the shape of the border?

In stencyl, when you load an image, just click the space around the character and it will make it transparent (make sure all space around your desired image is the same color)

With what tool? Magic wand?

Just when you choose the image file off your computer, on that screen click the color of the picture you want to be transparent. A little box in the top right should tell you which color you selected to be transparent.
