NaNoWriMo 2010!

NaNoWriMo 2010 has BEGUN!

NaNoWriMo is a writing project where you attempt to write 50k words in 30 days, averaging about 1,666 words a day. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to end the month with a manuscript that you would have normally won't be able to make yourself write. Quality is superfluous; quantity is desired (although, if you prefer quality and quantity, be my guest. I'm one of these people :D).

NaNoWriMo starts in the month of November, at 0:00:01 am local time on the 1st of November. You end at 23:59:59pm local time on the 30th of November.

The seventeenth day of NaNoWriMo is almost all but over for most people. How's your progress? How do you think you will do? What have you learned? Are you having fun? :)

Daily Writing Tips [All OS]

Daily Writing Tips has a good lot of useful and helpful information that could help you as a writer overall. A lot of useful and interesting information, if you are willing to spend some time to look through it and read up on the things that they provide.

One Page per Day [All OS]

An online application that lets you log in with your Google or Twitter account and be prompted to write one page a day. One page may be insufficient for NaNoWriMo, but if you want something to prompt you to write everyday, this would be an interesting application for you!

Useful Tools and Programs

Write or Die [All OS]

Write or Die is a very well known online tool to get you to write as much as possible in as short time as possible.

There are two different versions of this application. One is the online version, which doesn’t save your work (so you need to copy/paste it into a word document to preserve them) and there is a desktop version made with Adobe AIR and requires a $10 payment. I haven’t used the desktop version myself, but it has been very helpful for others (and I would love to try it [hint hint] )

Papel [Windows]

Papel is one of the commonly used planning programs. You could use this if you want, but it won’t do much more than help with organising ideas. Not extremely powerful, but could suit your needs.

yWriter5 [Windows, limited Linux support]

Definitely one of the more complex and interesting programs out there (free of charge too) that has been a good tool for many writers who have used NaNoWriMo.

Definitely worth a try if you don’t have the money to spend on expensive programs. The lack of Mac and Linux support is a bit disappointing for such users, but unfortunately that’s how life is.

If you really want a planning tool, it wouldn’t hurt to give this a try. Probably one of the better tools than the many you might come across, both as a planning tool and as a writing tool.

Openoffice.org [All OS]

Openoffice.org. ’Nuff said.

Scrivener [Mac OSX, Windows Beta, WINE supported]

I wonder who has been in the writing scene but hasn’t have heard of Scrivener. Scrivener for the OSX has been one of the most famed and well known, full fledged writing tools, ranging from story-boarding, to planning, to the actual writing, and could potentially substitute for an actual word processor.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to pay for Scrivener (US$45.00), but fortunately, Scrivener, which started as a result of NaNo, will always have an offer for you people.

Information for the NaNoWriMo “trial” Scrivener, along with the upcoming Windows Beta, can be found here.

Liquid Story Binder [Windows]

Another relatively well known program. Unfortunately, isn’t free (US$49.95), but it is quite full featured. If you are really keen, you might want to wait out for Scrivener, but if you have the spare cash lying around (yea right), you could definitely consider this tool.

There is a 30-day trial (I believe), so if you want, give it a shot!

Minimalistic Writing Programs

Dark-Room [Windows]

A port of the OSX Write-Room program into Windows. Not too shabby.

Q10 [Windows]

Another minimalistic writing program. I like this a lot more than Dark-Room and Focus Writer if you are on Windows. No Mac or Linux support, unfortunately, but quite a usefull application nonetheless. If you need a minimalistic writing program, this could be one of those you want to try first.

Focuswriter [Windows, Mac OSX, Linux]

Not as good as I would like when compared to Q10 on Windows, but definitely worth a look if you are on a Linux OS or on OSX.

Writemonkey [Windows]

Another minimalistic writing program. I’m guessing I’m listing loads of these when they almost all do the same thing, but up to you to choose. :)

Commonly Asked Questions

What can you write?

I suppose, from the NaNo site, you need to write:

We define a novel as “a lengthy work of fiction.” Beyond that, we let you decide whether what you’re writing falls under the heading of “novel.” In short: If you believe you’re writing a novel, we believe you’re writing a novel too.

Must I start from scratch?

This sounds like a dumb, arbitrary rule, we know. But bringing a half-finished manuscript into NaNoWriMo all but guarantees a miserable month. You’ll care about the characters and story too much to write with the gleeful, anything-goes approach that makes NaNoWriMo such a creative rush. Give yourself the gift of a clean slate, and you’ll tap into realms of imagination and intuition that are out-of-reach when working on pre-existing manuscripts.

Outlines and plot notes are very much encouraged, and can be started months ahead of the actual novel-writing adventure. Previously written prose, though, is punishable by death.

Can I bend the rules?

*looks the other way*

Okey dokey I’m officially going to let Glomple/Jude handle the thread from soon (like now maybe) since I’m going to be away on exams and I hate handling logistics with a separate account (>:)

So, anyone wants to share some of their plans?

I’ve started with a title: Winds. Then I got nowhere. Wheeeee!

I got a title~ Callin’ it “Grid Work”. One of the characters is named Grid. Get it? Eh? I’m so clever~

And then I got stumped, and decided not to think about the project anymore. Just going to go for it. I’ve done enough planning I feel, which isn’t much, but when compared to the previous years of participation it is like a million percents more. I did the math.

Anyways, yeah. Hopefully November won’t be too rough for me, and I can get somewhere with this.

This is what I wrote on my Novel Info’s synopsis. The novel’s called “The Short Story Club”. It might be changed to “Writer’s Block” but that sounds kinda odd.

Everybody has ideas waiting to be written on a paper. However, most of us wouldn’t even turn on their laptops nor get writing utensils to write a single word.

“It’s tough.”
“I’m lazy.”

We all heard these before.

But three students decided to defy conventional thought. They formed a short story club even if the school rejected them. Together, they strive to write short stories and somehow publish them into a magazine.

Terry is a cynical student who thinks he’s superior to everyone else. He enjoyed reading the classics like 1984. Whenever someone possessed “inferior thoughts”, he would look down on him or her.

Shelley is a optimistic cloudcuckoolander who always daydreamed during class. Her gullibility is astonishing but she always looked everything on the positive side. She doesn’t like scary and downer stories. Instead, she likes to write odd happy fairy tales.

Dent is the school clown and enjoyed being a non-conformist. He always had a kick in offending everybody. His favorite films (he doesn’t read much) are The Army of Darkness, Little Miss Sunshine, and The Room. He enjoyed deriding Terry a lot because of his dislike. He also wrote literary nonsense, the same genre Alice in Wonderland is, and stories with implausible plot and characters.

The trio might stay as friends but whether they could succeed is all up to the readers.

Stumbled upon something interesting (via lifehacker):

http://www.onepageperday.com/

Its a web app that lets you sign in with your google or twitter account, then be prompted everyday to write one page. Wanted to share, but I haven’t tried it myself.

Oh, and title: Ms. Perfect

At least, that’s what I’m going with for now. I might change it halfway through, though. :(

Is it about a satire who think she’s oh-so perfect in the whole wide world?
