Daily Writing Tips [All OS]
Daily Writing Tips has a good lot of useful and helpful information that could help you as a writer overall. A lot of useful and interesting information, if you are willing to spend some time to look through it and read up on the things that they provide.
One Page per Day [All OS]
An online application that lets you log in with your Google or Twitter account and be prompted to write one page a day. One page may be insufficient for NaNoWriMo, but if you want something to prompt you to write everyday, this would be an interesting application for you!
Useful Tools and Programs
Write or Die [All OS]
Write or Die is a very well known online tool to get you to write as much as possible in as short time as possible.
There are two different versions of this application. One is the online version, which doesn’t save your work (so you need to copy/paste it into a word document to preserve them) and there is a desktop version made with Adobe AIR and requires a $10 payment. I haven’t used the desktop version myself, but it has been very helpful for others (and I would love to try it [hint hint] )
Papel [Windows]
Papel is one of the commonly used planning programs. You could use this if you want, but it won’t do much more than help with organising ideas. Not extremely powerful, but could suit your needs.
yWriter5 [Windows, limited Linux support]
Definitely one of the more complex and interesting programs out there (free of charge too) that has been a good tool for many writers who have used NaNoWriMo.
Definitely worth a try if you don’t have the money to spend on expensive programs. The lack of Mac and Linux support is a bit disappointing for such users, but unfortunately that’s how life is.
If you really want a planning tool, it wouldn’t hurt to give this a try. Probably one of the better tools than the many you might come across, both as a planning tool and as a writing tool.
Openoffice.org [All OS]
Openoffice.org. ’Nuff said.
Scrivener [Mac OSX, Windows Beta, WINE supported]
I wonder who has been in the writing scene but hasn’t have heard of Scrivener. Scrivener for the OSX has been one of the most famed and well known, full fledged writing tools, ranging from story-boarding, to planning, to the actual writing, and could potentially substitute for an actual word processor.
Unfortunately, you are going to have to pay for Scrivener (US$45.00), but fortunately, Scrivener, which started as a result of NaNo, will always have an offer for you people.
Information for the NaNoWriMo “trial” Scrivener, along with the upcoming Windows Beta, can be found here.
Liquid Story Binder [Windows]
Another relatively well known program. Unfortunately, isn’t free (US$49.95), but it is quite full featured. If you are really keen, you might want to wait out for Scrivener, but if you have the spare cash lying around (yea right), you could definitely consider this tool.
There is a 30-day trial (I believe), so if you want, give it a shot!
Minimalistic Writing Programs
Dark-Room [Windows]
A port of the OSX Write-Room program into Windows. Not too shabby.
Q10 [Windows]
Another minimalistic writing program. I like this a lot more than Dark-Room and Focus Writer if you are on Windows. No Mac or Linux support, unfortunately, but quite a usefull application nonetheless. If you need a minimalistic writing program, this could be one of those you want to try first.
Focuswriter [Windows, Mac OSX, Linux]
Not as good as I would like when compared to Q10 on Windows, but definitely worth a look if you are on a Linux OS or on OSX.
Writemonkey [Windows]
Another minimalistic writing program. I’m guessing I’m listing loads of these when they almost all do the same thing, but up to you to choose. :)
