Heya all, here are some oldies :)

Most of these drawings are paper RPG characters I played for years..

Direct link to my gallery for DA unfriendly Zappan’s gallery

PS :
All these drawings, pictures, animations and photographies are my own property and I don’t allow anyone to use them.
They’re all copyrighted, thanks for not using them without my permission ;)

This one is taken from a french RPG. I forgot its name though..

Another french RPG, this character is a Darken named “Le Clown”.

This is a dwarf from Gemini, a psychotic alcoholic tatoo and piercing addict

This one is just for fun..

A big munchkin taken from d&d

A Lych from Ji-Herp, a french RPG

Gemini, as for the Dwarf, this one is a Psychotic Inquisitor with a leather mask to hide his burnt face

A character I’ve played taken from “la caste des métabarrons” ’s universe

Todd Connor, a FBI “agent” (Coluche style ^^) from Chill, the game.

Val, an elf from d&d I’ve played for 7 years

Still Val, doomed.. Transgendered.

A Karaturian from DD3, asian martial art adept. A Monk ^^

The Same

Zappan, a character from Shadowrun I’ve played for 4 years (inspired from zapan from Battle Angel Alita)

Still Zappan

It’s all folks ! Hopping you’ll enjoy these oldies :) Feedbacks are welcome ;)

You can see more work on my page as flash games engine Zappan on Deviantart

Damn Zappan, you’ve got some skills. I like the first colour and the one called “A Lych from Ji-Herp”.

I’m glad you like it :) I’ll probably post more recent work soon :)

Anyway, is there a way to embed flash works here or I have to post a link ?

Very cool drawings meng! You seem to have a decent understanding of volume/lighting/etc. I would recommend continuing to progress with life-drawing/painting classes. Also try some observational drawings.

Thanks, I’ve had some years of traditionnal anatomical drawing (a few years ago) But that’s really not my hobby and I’m stubborn as a mule, I prefer drawing doodles just for pleasure :)

Pretty nice stuff, Zappan. I don’t mean to be rude but I think some of the stuff is great and some of the stuff isn’t quite. Not that you should care but here’s the stuff I liked and thought felt fresh…worthy of exploration.

Your pierced dwarf has a confidence of form that lots of the others lacked. I think that you didn’t try too hard to exaggerate the proportions and because of that the character’s “character” could be found in the forms. That’s a difficult thing for even professional artists to do. The other reason I think it pulls together is because of the little loose doodles around it…as if you yourself was surprosed at how it turned out. (Though I might have preferred that his cranium were a touch blockier…it’s a bit egg-shaded.) I could see drawings like that be cleaned up in ink and used in a professional capacity. The realistic proportions are much more interesting than the fantastical or exaggerated ones…as if the exaggerations are trying to hide the fact that you’re not really sure how you WANT to draw that part of the character’s body.

My suggestion, for what it’s worth, is to go out and pick up a pad of good tracing vellum. Draw very loosely to capture those forms and expressive gestures…trace out the mass around it…trace again the draperies and blocked-in objects…trace again with added detail and background…trace again until you like it…then trace it again for good measure. While this may seem like an approach to technical illustration, it might help you resolve those parts of your drawings that you’re unsure about, or unhappy with. There’s a lot of good stuff here but it seems like it needs just a touch more discipline to really snap into place.

I’m pleased that you are a D&D player. I’ve been an art director for Wizards of the Coast for almost 10 years now…including a long stint on Dragon Magazine. It doesn’t make me an expert on the subject but maybe it’s interesting to you to know what I think…and maybe it’s not. Fair either way. Bottom line, I like it.

It’s an honor to have such a comment from a former art director of Wizards of the coast :) I’ve read all your suggestions with many interest (and tried to do my best to understand, due to my lack of english vocabulary ;))

I often have this kind of critics on my lack of anatomical research, and I’m working on it to improve myself :) (In fact, only the two last drawings are made since I’m “working” on anatomy, even if these two aren’t anatomically correct). Previous ones are older drawings :)

Thank you very much for this really interesting comment, I’m really honoured :)

Plus, here are two speed paint made with artpad :

a mouse made one :

and a tablet made one :

(they are speed paintings, only few minutes each other, that’s why they’re a bit creepy :p)

Oh, I’m not former yet! I’m still there and busy making games. Here are some examples of the games or products I’ve been the art director on, for what it’s worth: http://ww2.wizards.com/Dreamblade/ http://wizards.com/avalonhill/vegas_showdown_de… (I didn’t do the demo; I did the board game that the demo is for) http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/prod/roborally

At any rate I like your stuff quite a bit. The dude with a gun that you did with a tablet I expecially like since it seems loose and natural…sort of like you drew it on a pad with markers. Plus the looseness conveys a confidence that overworked, nit-picky details will sometimes hide. (Overworked details on a poorly drawn figure is an easy indication for lack of experience.)

At the end of the day no single piece of advice will help anyone draw significantly better. Only drawing will do that. However, drawing from life (drawing an object that you are physically looking at) and drawing the human figure are two hunks of wisdom that benefit ALL artists!

These days I read a lot of urban design and architecture books. There’s lots of great stuff about the artistic spirit in these…I find better stuff about drawing in most architecture books than I do in books about drawing. Oh, but one book I remember REALLY liking when I was younger was Robert Henri’s The Art Spirit. It’s pretty inexpensive and filled with short passages about painting and seeing. Good stuff, that.

Oh, some of your stuff kind of reminds me a bit of Jeff Laubenstein.
