Rap was an art form, until some buttcheese ruined it in the ‘90’s.
Oh really? I think what you might be referring to is Hip-Hop, which is yes- much like Rap, but is a different genre. It is something that spurred rap. What’s more, using “buttcheese” to describe somebody you don’t really even know makes you sound like a little kid… No offense.
Now its all about shootin’ poeple up and getting laid.
Oh really? I disagree that ALL of rap is about shooting people up and gettin’ laid, but I’ll agree that the content of the vocals in most rap is very “Gloaty” and has no emotion or meaning. This majority seems like a group of egotistic people trying to impress everyone with what they own or the things they have done in their lives that someow make them higher up in an imaginary social chain they seem to have dreamt up. it’s really quite irritating for me to hear the overuse of beatboxes and synthensizers as opposed to more traditional instruments, like pianos, trumpets, guitars, ect. But I guess that just goes hand in hand with the style of music(Some rap, yes, does use instruments like this, I am speaking for the latter). It’s more generally accepted as a genre too, so I don’t think the style of music itself is going to change any time now. There’s not really any point in complaining why it is bad, there is really nothing that you can do. Rap has a lot of followers, now. But that’s up to them, if they have the personal taste to listen to what you dislike, leave them to it- it isn’t hard to ignore.
I don’t think ALL modern Rap is like this, listen to some of Eminem’s work. Although yes, he can be an ignorant bastard, and generally very offensive, but he actually puts a lot of effort into what he does. A good example of this would the song “Stan”, it breaks away from the stereotype you are blacklisting and in your perspective, is in the same era as rap that you think “BLOWS HARD” and tells a decent story, with lyrics that are understandable. You could argue, that he is in it for the money, but that doesen’t discount that he made at least a couple of good songs which therefore, I think that not “ALL” of modern Rap “BLOWS”.
Really though, it is all down to personal taste. That is mainly why there are so many different genres of music in general.
tell me why you think rap does or doesn’t BLOW HARD!
I don’t think it “BLOWS HARD”, but I don’t like it in general. I like Eminem… Which is considered Rap, but all of the other stuff that I have, or have been forced to hear on the way to school on the bus and in other public instances, is irritating and I don’t like it. The reason mainly, is because I don’t beleive that much emotion in music can be achieved by entirely mixing and processing sound through a computer chip and trying to make everything perfect. Generally, the only aspect of emotion(Which I think is something important for all music.) in Rap can be the lyrics and singing, because the beat in a lot of these rap songs is extremely repetetive, dull and sounds very manufactured. The vocals in my belief, aren’t exactly very passionate, or very creative for that matter, and therefore I don’t like Rap as a genre on the whole. I wouldn’t call it “Singing”, more “Talking” and doesen’t really require much talent to come out with, in my opinion.
Another thing I don’t like about some Rap, is the constant talk about; “Oh yeah, I come from the hood, we so run down, we so poor, shame on those rich bastards” type of garbage it occasionally spews out. I find it ironic that these rappers, who make a lot of money indeed from this, do nothing to actually help or support the “Ghetto’s” that they originally came from and make money from through their music. They are just using their background as an excuse to earn some dough- and screw everyone else. Mind you, not all Rap is like this. I have found, only a small minority is.
In general, I don’t think Rap “BLOWS”, because I’d rather not use it as a part of my vocabulary,(It actually sounds like vocabulary that would be used by a rapper… tbh.) but I don’t like Rap because it always seems to follow the stereotype that it portrays far too often, and pisses me off. I only like the kind of Rap that breaks away from this and plays to my likes, so as a result, due to personal taste, I don’t like Rap. I prefer what I would call “more melodical” music, like Groove Metal.
It’s mainly down to personal opinions and taste. I’m not saying anything I said you should take as fact, but just understand it’s what I beleive. As would many guys I know that like Rap music in general, I have met a lot of nice people that listen to Rap music, and a lot of them came to respect that I wasn’t a fan of Rap very quickly. Not saying that any of you are judging people for who they are by the music they listen to, but if there are people here who do, I just thought I’d throw that one out there.
Overall, I think Rap is Bad. There are some exceptions, though.

Anyway rap is amazing. Then you have those dumbass rock musicians banging on a drum and they call that music. People like t pain, lil wayne, soulja boy, Eminem and especially the king of rap Kanye West revolutionised rap to the modern genre.
You really have no idea how hard it is to even play a drum set, do you? Anyway, rap is okay, but sometiems it just get’s way too…simple….When I hear ‘new’ rap songs they sound the same as some other ones. Atleast rock has some variety other than rhyming a bunch of stuff.

to cut a long story short rap isn’t a distinct genre, it’s an optional component of hip-hop. Or you may use the word interchangeably with hip-hop.

T Pain = Autotune Junkie
Soulja Boy = Repetive music that takes about a half an hour to write
Eminem = The only one you mentioned with any merit as a musician at all
Playing a drum kit is actually quite hard, and I’d like to see a rapper play songs like Judas Priets’s "Painkiller, Pantera’s “Becoming”, or Judas Priest’s "Exciter on drums.

Uh, I listen to plenty of ‘rock’, however loosely you want to define it (electro, math, shoegaze, post, punk etc.). Fair amount of electronica, folk, pop, trip hop, and experimental too. I basically listen to whatever I like that catches my interest. I don’t listen to metal particularly because I don’t like how it sounds. I’m sure it’s hard to do, don’t get me wrong, but I still don’t find it interesting to listen to.
I don’t like the rap artists sportsmaster mentioned above either really. Stuff like Talib Kweli, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Wu Tang Clan, MF Doom, Immortal Technique, Dizzee Rascal and Akala is more my preference.

Was just replying to what nanto said re.

Which I thought was pretty stupid.
Also I think your comment about a rapper playing the drums on Painkiller could be contrasted with the lyrics on Painkiller (which honestly seem laughably cliched to me) and this.

Its not a secret that any Judas Priest lyrics that were on the any album after Stained Class were pretty cliche, but they make for a good time. Rock and metal contrary to popular belief do actually have alot of intelligent lyrics though. (See Death albums Human – Sound Of Perseverance, Black Sabbath, Crowbar, etc.). And I do agree alot of rap has good lyrics, but the majority of people who listen to rap listen to that “I pimped my hoes ass” bullshit.

Okay, you don’t judge rap by the songs that are all ‘me and my homies like to have sex with women and shoot people and also we have a lot of money’ and I won’t judge metal by the songs that are all ‘HURRDURRBLOODANDFIRE’.
And I know rock has intelligent lyrics for crying out loud. Just need to listen to some Hold Steady, Decemberists or Mountain Goats to figure that out.

Rap is amazing stuff, you people are jsut too simple minded to understand it. Listen to Eminem, and he talks about real stuff that happens to him. Not just talking about how he got a car and it is really nice. Rap needs to have good tune and at least decent lyrics. Old school rap was stupid. Nowadays people like Kanye West, eminem, Lil Wayne and Flo Rida are awesome and revelutionising the art of music.

And if revoultionizing means hitting a new low, then yes these artists are revolutionizing the art of music.

What are you talking about? Lil Wayne and Flo Rida are perfectly fine, go back and listen to your shitty metal crap instead of rapbashing. some people actually like it, instead of listening to washed up drug addicts singing about painting stuff black.

I’m not rapbashing, I’m bashing mainstream rap. Lil Wayne and Flo Rida just rap about sex, money, etc.
And your comment was such a stereotype, so I’m gonna ignore it.

What is wrong with mainstreem rap? What is worse?
Rap: singing about getting laid and getting a hangover
Rock: getting laid then singing with a hangover

Rap: singing about getting laid and getting a hangover
Rock: getting laid then singing with a hangover Singing about it because it’s degrading, having sex is a natural part of life. Think about it this way, whos worse, the douche who decides to brag to everyone about how much sex he has, or the guy who just has sex?

He probabally didn’t even get laid that night… My point is people have sex all the time. Big deal. Just when you start rapping about while refering to women as “bitches” or “hoes” it vulgar, and degrading.

They don’t refer to them like that in rap. You don’t listen to rap so how would you know?
