Viking metal is usually pretty shit.

I must admit, alot of it usually is rather dire, but there are good ones out there if you look. Though many wouldn’t class them as “official” Viking Metal, Amon Amarth is a good starting base. It is growls and screaming, (Though not too bad) but the powerful, heavy guitars and driving riffs are rather melodic, and the Viking imagery comes across very well.

On the other end of the scale there is Turisas, which is more symphonic and easier on the ears.

Then ofcourse there is Tyr…not too bad, though sometimes their songs can be a little bland. On the whole though, I think these three are the better Viking Metal bands out there.

To me Viking Metal is any kind of metal that sings about Vikings or has a Viking image. I would class Amon Amarth as Viking Metal, but there is a long standing debate that it is melodic death metal.
I don’t really understand the debate, as the different bands of the Viking Metal genre have such a diverse range or sound. If it’s about Vikings why can’t it be simple Viking Metal?

All I know is Viking Metal invented Viking style windmill headbanging, so it must be good.

Ahhh, The Pursuit of Vikings. That was the first song I heard by Amon Amarth, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Their latest album, Twilight of the Thundergod is immense!
I really love these three though…

Because to be actual “viking metal” they would need a common acoustic instrument used in most, if not all, songs. So bands like Amon Amarth are not viking metal but (insert metal genre here) with lyrics loosely based on Norse mythology and other themes concerning vikings.

Viking metal isn’t a real genre

Vikings were scandinavian settlers (as i’m sure you know) therefore, any band from Scandinavia is ’’viking’’

are AbbA viking pop? NO.

Viking metal is normally folk/black metal or melodic death metal like Amon Amarth, don’t be fooled by fake genres.

Abba is from Sweden, and Sweden is not in Scandinavia.

Just because A Lot black metal bands have started to go the way of Bathory, does not mean that “viking” metal is from black metal.

Amon Amarth ARE NOT “viking” metal and just because melodic death metal has amon amarth, does not mean that viking metal comes from melo-death either.
