So, I was talking with some people on Kong last night, and they got me thinking about angry music. I know I’m going to sound like an old fogey (shut up Azieru and Blarlack), but I fail to see the real appeal of what I call “death metal”, which basically consists of lots of demonic-sounding yelling/screaming over top of a an over-active trap and some generic, overly-over-driven guitars. Yeah, it sounds kind of angry, but I don’t feel like conveying this through noise is as good as effective lyrics, melodies, and mood.

So, mini-rant aside, what do you guys like (preferably shying away from the death metal genre) for some good, angry music?

Some of the ones that come to mind for me (making an effort to pick at least a few non-obvious ones) are:

“Paint It Black” – Rolling Stones

“Guerilla Radio” – Rage Against the Machine

“That Day” – Poe

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” – Nirvana

“Chop Suey” – System of a Down

“Down With The Sickness” – Disturbed

And I’m sure there’s some good Marilyn Manson and NIN that I just can’t think of right now…

Anything from the french hardcore scene. Daitro, La Quiete, and Raein are good starters.

Actually any hardcore band really.

There is a way to convey anger without yelling your lungs into little shriveled up rasins?

I could recommend some angry music but it does involve the growling/screaming/squealing but because you want to shy away from the demonic weird stuff I would recommend Hatebreed

I take issue with your super-broad definition of death metal. It really ties my hands here, but if there’s one thing I like, it’s giving my opinion (whether it’s desired or not). Hence, list below.

T1000- Fear Factory

Simple Design- Breaking Benjamin

Trashed and Scattered- Avenged Sevenfold

To The World- Strike Anywhere

I F*ing Hate You- Godsmack
