Guys, I’m not exactly sure why this happened, but if you install the latest adobe plug-in, they’ll work again. Your welcome in advance.

Im having the same problem. I have been playing Kongregate games for months and months and now I get a black screen in the flash square. I was going fine in Kongai then I changed to the Samurai game and it went black and now I cant get back in Kongai or anything else. I restarted and re-installed adobe and nothin works. The samurai game worked on a different website for me though.

It seem slike its a kongregate problem…

I was able to recreate a similar issue with a user and put in a fix tonight. Not sure if it is the same as what you are experiencing. There are a few things you could do that would really help out:

1. If you are using Firefox, try disabling all your addons, or running in safe mode

2. Paste any Javascript errors you are experiencing in this thread. You can do this in FF by going to tools → error console, clicking on “Errors” to show only error messages, clicking “clear” to clear out any existing messages, and then loading a game page.

If anyone who is running into this problem is interested in working with me to try and fix it, send me an email: ben@kongregate.com

Platform: Win XP sp3, Firefox 2.0.0.17, latest flash player
I tried disabling all my plug-ins, tried running in safe mode, was not getting any errors (41 warnings though).
Tried running in IE, and still only got black/grey screens…

Then (just to eliminate any possible cause) I tried disabling my Symantec Personal Firewall, restarted firefox, and games started showing up again. So if you are getting the black screen, you may need to adjust your firewall settings.

To Kong staff: You might want to adjust the way you are serving the new in-game-window adds, because the common user will have no idea how to adjust the firewall settings to white-list the different advertisers you are trying to inject into the game window; and I am sure you do not want to try to write guides for all possible firewall software out there to ‘teach’ your users how to do it, and telling them to ‘just turn it off’ is also NOT an acceptable answer. Just stick with the adds scattered around the rest of the site, and do not mess with injecting them into the game window.

I tried individually turning off my AdBlock Plus, My Symantec Firewall, and my NoScript and none of them separately fixed the problem. I did restart firefox after doing those things as well. Ether War, Straw Hat Samurai, and Kongai still dont load, I havent tried others. The black screen covers the whole chat box and it persists regardless of which of those things I do.

Did my add on creators black list one of the sites that Kongregate tried to inject in the game window and that tripped a protection feature that now blocks every single game in every single window?

If so… thats uncool. If my problem is because of adds in the game window, just keep them out of it. I still have all the MTG ads and stuff and those are just fine where they are. Messing up my ability to play any and all games on the site just makes me want to go elsewhere for my games though.

If I turn off all the items and restart firefox it still wont give me anything but a black screen for all of the game window, including the chat box.

My firewall logs show this every time I close all my tabs and bring them all back up. Considering everything works on the other tabs these kinda feel related to my black screens in the game window.

Thanks guys, we’re looking into this now.

I have applied a patch which should fix some cases of this issue that I was able to recreate. I have a feeling that there are multiple issues depending on OS/browser/firewall software, etc. You should clear your cache in order to pick these changes up.

If you are still running into problems, please post the details in this thread. Screenshots would also be greatly appreciated/helpful.

Thanks for all your help so far!

I recently went through and made sure again that the most recent version of Adobe flash player, IE, and all windows XP updates were uploaded successfully. I cleared my cache, which always allowed kongregate to send data to me anyway, and all temp. internet files. I, sadly, am still getting the gray box of unplayability. The rest of the site loads wonderfully, and I can play flash games on other websites, but I would really like to play them through this site here :)

Just pushed another update which should resolve more of these issues. It appears that some software is aggressively blocking javascripts that we use on the site. If you are having problems, try to add kongregate.com as well as chat.kongregate.com to the whitelist and see if that helps.

After turning off adblock in the firewall, firefox now works with no problem. In explorer, now the advertisement that loads before the game will load, but then it goes back to the solid grey game/chat window. Unfortunately, before I realized this was kongregate’s fault and not a general flash problem, I did a lot of uninstalling/reinstalling and re-configuring trying to get everything to work again, so the persisting IE problem could be self inflicted.

Note to Kongregate: Come on guys, this is just bad roll-out procedure. People expect their flash player to get corrupted or settings to get screwed up by auto-updates, but they don’t expect their favorite website to suddenly change something that would require modifications to their firewall software in order to load anything. Maybe in the future, a notice on the website when significant changes like this are made would be helpful. At least then we wouldn’t waste our time trying to fix our systems. On a more positive note, this is the only time my firewall adblock has ever successfully blocked anything – so hey, I’ve got that going for me. ;)

The goal is of course to not require people to play with their firewall/adblock software to use the site. However, testing every possible combination is almost impossible, which is why I’m trying to personally work with everyone who is reporting problems to get them fixed.
