I don’t really know if anyone would have an interest in this but I figured it would be worth a shot
I have made a program located here [http://megaswf.com/file/2476371](http://megaswf.com/file/2476371) (to view properly press the ‘play flash full screen button’ on that page) that will allow you to make levels for a game I have been working on a for awhile. It’s simple all you do is change the numbers in the large box to the right and the level to the left will change. On the very far right is a index to tell you what type of block each number will create.
The levels can vary but should not include very many long drops or massive empty spaces. The player can jump over 2 blocks high but not over 3.
To view some examples of good levels copy paste any of the following lists of numbers into that right area of the swf.
Really its that easy. If you can post your lists in this thread I would be happy to put your screen name in the credits of the game and it would help me out a lot.
I took a look and the .swf window was so small I would not have known what your app was if you hadn’t explained it in the post. Seriously, it’s about 100 pixels wide on my screen.
Another thing is, you’ve made the editor very inconvenient to use: Have each block type selectable and let the ‘players’ click in the main display window to change the block type instead. Make the TextField uneditable, but still selectable so people can copy their levels and paste them here. If people can _click_ their changes rather than having to _type_ them at the proper index you will likely get a much better response. Make it as easy as possible for people to create content for your game. Help us help you.
At the beginning of my post above I put “to view properly press the ‘play flash full screen button’ on that page”. This will allow you to use the swf file.
As for your second suggestion I might give that a shot if people are unable to use what I provided.
Sorry, I missed that somehow. Indeed it works better on fullscreen mode. Good luck. I don’t think ‘unable’ will be the problem, but _unwilling_ to use a cumbersome interface when it really wouldn’t be all that hard to make a convenient one might be. I hope not.
Good work so far.
It’s well worth the time to make a decent level editor that a player could use with no instructions. It will make your level designing and tweaking much easier, and you can ship it with the final game, massively increasing the replay value.
It’s kinda hard to make levels for you right now; there’s no objective. Are we trying to get from A to B? What are the hazards/challenges? I’d add a ‘test’ mode before asking for people to design levels. A good level for sonic might be terrible for mario.
The levels are just areas with platforms like the examples above. When I pop these lists of numbers into the games it creates the level and fills it with enemies and the rest of the game plays out. Essentially your making levels with lots of different jumps and ways to get around the level. So long as their inst a massive gap or empty space in the level, and the level inst cut in half or something by a solid layer of blocks its perfect.
Here’s one, I based it off your second example.
Looks good although I am going to alter it a little bit to make it symmetrical and also make it so the slopes near the top have a gap between the platforms. Ill add your Kongregate name to the credits and and you a link to the game when it is uploaded.
Thanks again and feel free to make more :D!
