More detail? Difficulty? What you’re going to need help with? Are you going to ask them to make a section of the game, or just ask them questions?

Programming is usually one of the main parts of the game, especially if they’re going to be the one putting it together so 20% is too little.

Also, what type of game is it? I may be able to help.

20% for programming is very low indeed.

20% is generally pretty high actually. Programming is just one part of developing something and everyone wants a piece of the pie…designers, artists, writers, musicians, QA, support, marketing, sales, administration, etc. etc.

20% in this case is more than fair, unless the programmer is doing all of the work past “here is an idea and I’ll get some ad revenue”.

Dealing in percentages isn’t always the best option anyway…I’d rather have 1% of Microsoft than 50% of youtube. Anyway, there are other options to look at for revenue sharing..

When negotiating with someone, you could ask for the first $x generated (for example, you could ask for the first $10,000 generated in revenues) or a tiered percentage…you want 50% of revenues in the first six month, 20% in the following six months, and 5% thereafter. Be creative, there are lots of ways to work out revenue sharing or compensation beyond “I want x%”. Remember also, if you demand too much (and 20% is a lot in some situations, not all), the other person (or people in the event we are talking about a team) will be disincentivized and won’t be very eager to go out and make money that you will be getting a lion’s share of.

Just my two cents : )

Programming is maybe 60% designing doesnt get a reward of its own so the programmer/artists/musician gets that title in the credits.Beta testing is volountery so the beta testers are not paid because of the fact that its a small flash game.Marketing and sales are pretty much the same and again are not even in this industry.Administration is again performed by the programmer, artist or musician. And about the music- its mostly premade so a musician is rarely needed.

Percentage for months is boring to handle. You see flash games are fast to make and it is not hard to make 3 in one month.Imagine how complicated things get when you try to handle 20 games.

20% of Mochi-Ads is probably about 10 bucks, depending on the exposure. Plus, mochi-ads are disabled on Kongregate anyway.

P.S. Bob, I think your link is cut-off. You probably mean this
