With the Mars landing only a couple of days away, I am surprised nobody has made a thread on it. What are your guys’ thoughts on continued exploration of Mars? Should we keep funding NASA for future exploration, and possibly colonization or industrialization? Can we lay claim to the solar system, and can we stay forever on earth?

on a low priority budget, while the economy is waning …so basically, not right now.
i guess so, since no competitor seems present.
virtually, yes. doesn’t mean we have to.

Should we keep funding NASA for future exploration
Do you really need to ask that? Of course you should. Slash the defence budget, tax the corporations, steal it from Bill Gates, but find the money from somewhere. I sat up all night to watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon, and I want to see America do something amazing again.
Can we lay claim to the solar system
Obviously America can’t, that’s just not going to happen. If the solar syatem belongs to anybody, it belongs to the whole of humanity, and most definitely not to American corporations with no motivation other than money. But space exploration is the sort of thing that America does really well, and it should be leading the way.

Yeah. Mars is going to be the next big stepping stone- once we get to the asteroid belts, we’re gonna have all the resources.
And we can tell China where to stick their damn rare earth monopoly.

I hope NASA keeps funding and exploring…as for laying claim to the solar system, I hope you meant that as ‘we’ the human race. If any one country tried to lay claims of ownership to the moon or any other planet, I will be more than pissed off…as I’m sure a lot people would be. (Newt Gingrich’s idea of colonising the moon and to make it another state of America could potentially lead to war.)

lol. like they would ever be able to do that?
i hate to break it to you, but America’s dominance in fields like science and space exploration is massively overrated in American media.
sure, Russia isn’t in their league anymore, but Europe, Japan, and increasingly China is, with Canada as a small partner. soon enough Brazil and India will join.
so don’t you worry about war now. if the USA ever tries to proclaim the Moon a colony of the USA, we won’t wage war, we’ll just laugh in your face and ignore your stupid joke.

I believe that the government should give more money to programs like this and NASA; instead of pointless wars. Knowledge of the universe that God, our Holy Father, has given us IS a positive thing, and should be explored more deeply. God with all his infinite wisdom has given mankind the key to the stars, the key to cure suffering people of terrible diseases and cancers, the key to a better world!!

Just because a planet is in the habitable zone, doesn’t necessarily mean there’s life on it. Otherwise Mars and (possibly) Venus would have life. Granted it’s pretty cool to think that we may find habitable planets in the future, but who knows if that means anything.

I’m pretty sure Jesus was ancient Israeli, not black or European. Also, let’s get back on track now about the Curiosity rover.

My original statement was completely relevent. I was not the one who “derailed” the thread. I was simply defending myself. :)

Thanks for that. I’m not often watching telly at 6 o’clock in the morning. I’m glad to see such a success and that America can still get something right when it tries.

The backstop on the question is what is the ROI. In the 60’s/70’s, we saw a huge return on investment in the private sector during the apollo missions. Like the safety glass in your windshield of the car, making electronic components smaller to give you a better stereo, heck TANG. The Space Sciences were leaking into our everyday gadgets on a consistant basis, raising our whole standard of living.
Of course back then with 1960’s tech, we could get a man on the moon. Considering the US has to beg other countries for a ride to the International Space Station shows how far in the race we’ve slipped.
Today we are still investing a LOT of money into NASA and space, but what ROI are we seeing for the investment as a society?
