Am I the only one who thinks these pertussis vaccine ads are a little over the top?

There are these new ads on television and even before video games or youtube. They show a mother holding her baby, and then suggest that she could be infecting with a deadly disease. It’s very disturbing.
I know vaccines save lives, but I don’t think young mothers should be terrorized by propaganda into getting a shot they may not need.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8HORVhXujA The vibe I get from this ad is “Holding your baby is dangerous for you both.”

Honestly, I was excpeting a zombie apocalypse to pop up, considering how much horror elements they use in it.

well, you know the top three selling points: 1 sex, 2 fear, 3 babies.
but yeah i’d say that’s wrong. but i think many advertisements push it too far. often they try to guilt-trip you into buying stuff, or other such manipulation. like, suggest that you suck if you don’t buy their brand crap.
and then of course, there’s simply deliberately annoying you so you’ll remember the brand-name, filling your mind with crap. like flatly sung tunes.

See: South Park’s “Crack Baby Basketball” episode.
… It’s really strange how accurate South Park’s social commentary is.

Wish I didn’t have to watch the thing before every video game. It’s creeping me out LOL!

I have to agree with Tenco. Adblock plus will even block most youtube adverts. Combine it with a flash-blocker that makes it so you manually click to start a given flash program, and you will kill pretty much all adverts found on the web.
There’s not a single advert on Kong either. There are suspicious square-shaped empty boxes on some games though, which suggest there is supposed to be an advert there.

Neat. Doesn’t change the fact that ads like that are out there reaching millions. Messed up.

Well, a vaccine is supposed to be there to help you health-wise, giving you access to a weak or dead form of the bacterium/virus so your immune system learns to recognise it. They’re something everyone should have, really.
When there’s not a socialised healthcare system in place to ensure every citizen gets vaccinated, you have to resort to ‘shock and awe’ in order to get the message across, I suppose.

Medicine used to be about the noble cause of healing the world, now like everything else, it’s all about money.

Depends what country you are in. Outside of the US, medicine in the western world is still mostly about healthcare and keeping people well.
Inside the US, it is solely about keeping those ‘who can afford to pay’ well. It is a very different mindset.
It is also one of the reasons I prefer working outside of the US at the moment.

I, personally, am against the current use of advertisements any way, so I’ll agree on a different level.
