Is it wrong to hold the Sochi Olympics in the 3rd world country of Russia?

Russia doesn’t even have money to support themselves and now we’re letting them hold the 2014 Sochi Olympics? The water is unsafe to drink, they killed thousands of stray dogs and 20% of Russia’s population is addicted to heroin.

Errrrrrr…why would we want to hold the SOCHI Olympics in some country other than Russia?
Is your OP some kind of trick question?

Probably just another of the OP’s not exactly well thought out (if thought out at all) threads. Russia isn’t exactly a third world country either, which just illustrates the problem with this particular poster not exactly firing up the brain cells before making a topic.

Off-topic needs to stop spilling out into the SD forum. Don’t they have enough nonsense-trollfest threads there to satisfy them?

Trent, you’re always puffing and tuffing, just because you don’t do it exclusively before you post doesn’t mean it doesn’t count.
They’ve been killing stray dogs for a very long time, and drug addiction is widespread across many countries, not to mention the water is as safe to drink as the majority of tap water in the world. The majority of the dogs were sent to horrible shelters just outside of the city anyways, most of them weren’t killed.

greece did the same thing with their dogs. It’s an olympic tradition.

From browsing around, it appears Sochi has a serious stray animal problem. Rounding up stray dogs, rats, whatever is just commonsense public safety before any large event. It is safe to assume many strays will be diseased, and all will be opportunistic hunters. Removing them from the streets as best as possible, minimises the chance of disease transition onto humans, either from direct contact or bite, or from a scavenger helping themselves to your food before you eat it – and passing whatever nastiness may exist in their saliva, onto the human that way.

Those Russians didn’t kill their dogs for health issues.
They killed them because the Olympics came, and the whole world would be watching.
And they paid lots of money just to make that happen because they knew that internet fora and other media would be filled with gossip about them.
They murdered their dogs just to make their city look pretty to you, and you call them a third-world country ?
What did the Russians do in order to deserve such hatred from you ?

I agree, genociding a population of dogs is 100% justified because dogs could have diseases

discuss how we should kill all animals because they might have a disease D:

Your first statement answers the second

The two of you both seem a bit confused. Crow’s managed to mix up the meanings of the terms ‘round up’ and ‘genocide’, for reasons of well, Crow being Crow. By the same logic, every time a teacher rounds up the kids, every child in the world is killed. If that had happened, we wouldn’t actually have Crow’s presence in our world.

Powerpos seems to have the definition of murder a little mixed up. If a killing is legal, it’s not murder, by definition.

Aside from that, the rounding up and then usually killing of strays doesn’t appear to be solely limited to the olympics. A continuing cull has been ongoing for some time. From what I can dig out, it’s a regular thing; every time the stray population gets too large, it is culled. Yes, the cull this year is early, and it is no coincidence it coincides withthe Olympics, but there’s little doubt that an over-abundance of breeding feral pet animals is an ongoing major problem in the area, and probably for many cities.

Shelters help, but since the dogs and cats, and whatever other creatures are free-roaming, are continually breeding, and being fed (a common occourance apparently at any building site in the city, is the appearance of whole packs of dogs, who the construction workers then make sure are well fed.) Any shelter is swiftly going to become inundated with far more dogs/cats/whatever than it can possibly handle.

A better solution would be to catch and neuter/castrate the animals, so they can no-longer breed and increase their numbers. The vast bulk of the problem would resolve itself within two decades at the outside. But, that’s not a very Russian way of doing things. It doesn’t lend itself well to the complete organised chaos and periodic total staff firing & hiring practices that characterise the Russian governmental system.

As a side-note, another city which I’m sure Trent or Crow are going to claim is third world, is about to embark on a wide-scale Swan cull. When you consider which city that is, it does beg the question as to what third world is being defined as, in this context.

On this rounding up & slaughtering of dogs, I heard it was merely a case of misunderstanding on the Russian’s part about American cuisine. They thought a hot dog was……

I’d like to respectfully ask that you two gentlemen stop derailing my thread. Let’s focus on the mass genocide of dogs please.

Like vika said of your OP: Probably just another of the OP’s not exactly well thought out (if thought out at all) threads.

Ya really ought to keep things in perspective.
This “first-world, civilized” America you speak so highly of does this: About 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs—about one every 11 seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay/neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation, ensuring that every pet has a family to love them.

Only some of them are actually given up by the RESPONSBILE owners. The “often” above is quite misleading. It is more likely that those offspring are given away to ppl who are even more irresponsible and produce even more “unwanted” offspring…..which are often just dumped out someplace so they can be found by someone really wanting a stray dog; are dumped because they will be able to survive “in the wild”.

Feral companion animal pet populations are staggering. These animals aren’t vaccinated against any diseases….rabies, heartworms, etc. In addition to dying from disease, they can often starve to death….either way, NOT pleasant.

The United States is overrun with feral cats, many of them living in colonies. The Humane Society pegs the number of feral cats at 50 million. And across the country, a patchwork of advocates like Wehmann are working to find innovative and humane solutions to reduce the feral cat population.

NOW, Trent….just what is it that you wanna discuss about how Sochi, in wanting to put its best foot forward while hosting the Olympics, has done something about its FERRAL dog population?

The good of it all will be that now it is significantly reduced. The bad of it will be that they won’t make any serious effort to keep it that way. THAT is the utter insanity of their efforts.

Is it wrong to hold the Sochi Olympics in the 3rd world country of Russia?

Of course. It would be much better to hold the Sochi Olympics in New York.

But seriously.

3rd world country of Russia

It’s not 3rd world at all.

The water is unsafe to drink

Source?

they killed thousands of stray dogs

As I understand, they were killing stray dogs before the Olympics. And really, killing stray animals would make you more, not less, fit to host a sporting event for the world’s best athletes. It’s not like they’re hosting the 2014 Sochi Save Stray Animals Convention.

20% of Russia’s population is addicted to heroin

Do you have a source for this ridiculous statement?

the mass genocide of dogs

Do you understand the meaning of the word “genocide”? Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. Are dogs an ethnic, racial, religious or national group?

Furthermore, even if you were to claim dogs were one of those groups, you have to kill a shitload of dogs for it to even be considered as genocide. The amount of dogs killed in Sochi constitutes less than 0.1% of the world’s dogs. I’m pretty sure you have to kill at least around 30 or so percent to go into the genocide group.

Oh, yes, and “mass genocide is very redundant”. Genocide tends to be in mass, unless we’re using your definition.
