Regarding content in this forum:

edit, short version:

we get emails about things being really offensive in here. i would like to put disclaimer up top for this forum. is there anything you guys consider too offensive to be discussed here? are there any rules you would like to have?

Here are (somewhat)concise rules that I think would help with the sticky:

Using religion as an excuse for your beleifs is tolerable in some cases, and intolerable in others. If you are against gay marriage because of your religious beleifs, it will still get torn to shreds, but less so than if you were to say that God exists because you beleive in him in The Kong Search For Truth thread.

Facts are king. If you claim something, be prepared to back it up with facts. Anything else can and will be disregarded by the smart SDer.

Your opinion doesn’t prove anything. You can have it, you can yell it in caps lock all thread long, but opinion alone cannot change others minds, unless coupled with facts and well thought out reasonable arguments.

Expect adversity at all times.

Make sure your thread has room for discussion. Questions about important events, like how many superdelegates does Obama have, are better asked on a search engine.

You’re subjectively speaking objectively in favor of objectivity. It’s hard sometimes to find the distinction between subjectivity and objectivity, because you always speak from your necessarily subjective perceptions. Even in extending your thoughts to others and imagining the world outside your own perceptions, we are all bound to blunder into the Psychologist’s Fallacy at one time or another.

So, in short, what you’re doing here is reminding us of what should be our goal, and saying “try harder”.

Necessary, perhaps, and only time will see whether it functions as intended…but to meta- the meta-thread, it sounds terrible. It makes me giggle. : )

More to the point: the more zealous violators won’t stop to read a post a quarter as long as that.

I dunno, without more specifics about what people are calling “really offensive” it’s kinda hard to say anything.

In my experience though, things that are actually offensive get moderated pretty quickly. There’s some people (like me!) who are jerks, but I don’t think it’s fair to call that offensive and we’re usually called on it when it happens.

Mostly the debate is reasoned and interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if the people calling things offensive are doing so merely because there’s opinions that very strongly contradict their beliefs.

There have been some offensive things but it all gets taken care of very quickly. Really though, I would say this is the most civilized place on Kong. I haven’t seen many problems.

There should be a sticky. Put the “I am serious cat. This is serious thread” picture in the first post, so everybody gets teh general idea, even if they are “too busy” to read teh whole post.

I honestly haven’t seen anything I’d call offensive in here. There may be some who are offended by discussion of homosexuality or abortion and what have you, but really I don’t think they should be pandered to.

I can’t really think of anything that’s too offensive to discuss here, so long as it’s started in a thoughtful manner and continued in that vein.

To be honest I think the forum’s okay as it is. Most stupid threads (see: HELLWOLF) tend to get locked pretty quickly, and I’ve only occasionaly seen discussions get above what I’d consider to be an acceptable level of vitriol. That’s the problem with making rules like that though. Stuff like ‘mature topics only’ or ‘no personal attacks’ may be good as guidelines, but are really too subjective to be useful as hard-and-fast rules.
