People keep telling that goth’s cut them selfs but isn’t that emo? If I wear something black they call me emo 0_o. But whats the real difference about them? I would like MATURE answers, no offencing, ok?

Gothicism, I believe, is a religion. Emos just like to be goth without the maturity of religion. |
surely not. it is a cultural movement just like any other. putting people into categories by “signs” like “cuts hmself” doesn’t work. this one is especially nonsensical because people with varying degrees of varying mental disorders all over the world cut themselves, and many may never have heard the term “Emo”. in the end, a person pertains to a cultural scene when he 1. defines himself thusly (e.g. “I am Joe, and i am Emo.”) and 2. dresses and behaves according to the codes and customs of the scene. nothing more, nothing less. i’ve never known a goth who cut himself, and i’ve known my fair share. from what i know, i’d say that goth people tend to wear black only, listen to much heavier music and share a fascination for the occult, but these are only some signs – assigning other people to scenes you always end up using pretty arbitrary and superficial definitions. the best thing to know for sure would be just walking up to someone and ask him or her about the culture the person subscribes to (great way to meet girls, btw). i did that several times. important is to be genuinely interested and as unprejudiced as possible, because otherwise the person will abandon the conversation quickly for obvious reasons. the first question is always awkward, especially if you don’t know the person at all (not from your school or anything), but most people who really subscribe to a cultural movement will tell you about it when asked (exception: the fight club). |

I thought Gothic was a style of architecture with many gargoyles? I am imagining monks in sack-like clothing chanting. |
If you don’t mind utterly OTT stereotypes. Emos are passive whiners, and goths are angry rebels without a cause. |
Yes, Yurian… Gothic was definetly what you stated. But I am pretty sure they are referring to the subculture that enjoys that type of architecture and feeling. The whole “I’m overpowered by this emotion” feeling. I have an ongoing thread called “I’d like to hear from the emo’s” that has alot of replies stating what exactly Emo is, or what people think it is. I think goths are a little less secluded. They seem to be more social… I happen to know alot from the club I used to go to. They reach out more often than emo’s and can thoroughly enjoy life. |
Goth is different, it seems. Its… Bigger, more variation. Goth seems to be the “Others” who don’t quite fit elsewhere, but there usually outcasts anyway.
Hi. |
To me, all of these just basically are the same as screaming “Hey, look at me!!!!” |
LOL. Paladin. Alot of people enjoy the subculture, but don’t want the attention. Someone who wears black clothing, writes depressing poetry, and listens to MCR may look like, but is in fact, not an emo. I do two of those three things, but I definetly don’t seek attention. |
Good for you. ;-) |
goth and emo are very different goth are people whome focus on death and despair they look to darkness as their light and yes goths cut themselves but not because they are depressed but as a sort of ritualistic self-mutilation. goth much better than emos gothic culture is interesting because they seek to enjoy themselves through dark and sometimes horrific means. emos just dress in black cause they feel that black represents their sadness in a way but really they’re just poser panzies.. |
Goth’s listen to heavy/metal. Emo’s listen to emo-rock. |
goth cuts his balls emo cuts anything |
Actually goths have nothing to do with metal, they usually connect with darkwave, electrogoth and dark ambient music. They’re usually very smart, social and stand for their beliefs and are great conversation partners. Emos are just whiny attention whores who listen to music made by other whiny attention whores. |

I think you’re all giving both goths and emos way to much credit. People who subscribe to any subculture usually do so to feel a sense of belonging and/or to seek comfort in conforming. Neither subculture have specific traits or rights of passage and, just like religion, contain very different interpretations across different societies and cultures. People who have a sincere passion for things like ritualistic self mutilation, specific music genres, non-conformist dress etc tend not to openly subscribe to a subculture but are, instead, simply individuals. Nothing more nothing less. Those who make claim to being a goth or emo tend do so in order to conform due to the inability or unwillingness to seek individualism. Why do you think it’s the non-conformist sub cultures that are most willing to label themselves and conform? |
That makes sense. I don’t think there is much more to add. |
Most gothic kids I’ve met listen to metal. |
I hate emos and goths creep me out. |
That’s an idiotic comment. I thought goth was the style of dress, emos were people who dealt pain to themselves. I could be wrong, but whatever.
I hope I creep you out. |

There’s a picture I saw with that same caption. I totally agree. |
This has probably been said many time but now it’s my turn, Goth is like Satanic as emo just doesn’t see any point in life. |
Why does everyone have to have a label these days? It’s kinda pathetic, can we not all just be who we want to be without being judged for it? |
That’s not how our brains work. We are hardwired to categorize. Not much you can do about it. My personal response is to dress blandly so that people can’t use their first impressions to categorize me. I don’t wear anything with a logo, if the clothes have tags I trim them off, if they have an embroidered logo I don’t buy it. Lots of neutral colors, very generic styles. |

Emo is just a label they put on people who are social outcasts. The ridicule that comes with it causes just about all emos to cut themselves. I think PFB is right, gothicism is a religion |
