If you were in charge of your country, what changes would you make?

Does that mean I’d have ultimate decision power over my country? Or that my ways of influence would still be limited by constitution?

i would give the public the option to choose where there tax goes and, yes, you have unlimited decision power

If you want to destroy your country inside three months, that’s a pretty good way to go about it.

Make myself Dictator for Life, buy loads of houses and cars and appoint a deputy to run the country for me while I did absolutely nothing.

The place runs reasonably well as it is, so the only changes other than my job title would be little things. Abolish school league tables, get rid of a few hundred health and safety laws, re-train the people who used to enforce them to be police officers, and do whatever necessary to remove the European courts from my country’s legal system.

If people would decide where their tax goes, most wouldn’t pay taxes at all (if that is an option). It would essentially destroy either cheap or quality health care, at least in Europe. And lots of other things helping the poor… Lots of poor people would die. But then, if you ask me, people are the same under any financial system, were it capitalism, socialism, in between those or something else. Changing the system doesn’t change the people; there are always selfish/greedy people out there who cause injustice. In capitalism it just isn’t that visible. Financial inequality creates huge profit for companies and in the end it benefits the end-consumers (mainly westerners) as well, in a form of (unnaturally) cheap products.

Oh, and I wouldn’t want to be in charge of my country.

Kill all the politicians with no exceptions.
They all are curropt bastards.
Also, kill every one standing by them.

I would make sure that ministers are appointed by groups of experts in the field to make sure that they are actually competent in their resort and also to get someone in who is not driven for example by affiliations to certain companies.
Anyone who even thinks about making party politics gets kicked out, no questions asked. Sitting in the oppositions block and booing everytime someone from the government makes a suggestion is not politics. It’s stupid.
I think with these points our political system could actually work well. It’s not rubbish in theory. There’s just a lot of people in there who absolutely don’t belong in politics.

Most important point: reform the education system ASAP! First by adapting the Finnish system. We’ll see what the future brings.

Pressure the central bank to raise interest rates to reverse the deflationary spiral we’ve been in for the past two decades. Institute a larger bout of QE to devalue the yen and hopefully reverse the current liquidity trap investors have with the banks. See that the VAT gets raised to 10%. Also buy a sports car or something.

1. Abolishing the Education System. (in favor of public access to information and aiding children in finding whatever their curiosity demands, and stimulating them to be curious by collaborating with them to find alternatives if they aren’t learning)
2. Abolishing Most of the Intellectual Property Rights.
3. Democratising the Economy, by Abolishing the Privatisation of Public Provisions. (but not necessarily by collectivising the entire economy and all trade. either a change of the basis of what “money” is, or a dual economy where the individual’s “money” is only used for luxuries)
4. Establishing the Right to Secession as a Human Right. (abolishing nationalism in favor of regionalism and globalism)
5. Abolishing the Prison System. (in favor of focussing on all the alternatives that are already in place, by grading convicts up and down a scale of how badly we can trust them and need to keep an eye on them while restricting their traveling, socialising and business transaction rights, combined of course with mandatory rehabilitation courses and community service, therapy and psychiatric institutionalisation if necessary, and drugtesting and banishment for the worst)
6. Illegalising Private Advertisement.
7. Abolishing Familyism in Favor of Individualism and Communalism. (abolishing most of the parents’ rights)
8. Legalising Most Drugs.

also there needs to be an antonym to “privatise” that means public control. unfortunately “publicise” is already taken, but that should be it.

Perhaps democratize or communize depending on what exactly you mean.

Hmm, where to begin???

In no particular order…

Simplify and rationalise the taxation system

Set personal allowances at a level such that it not necessary to return money taken in tax as tax credits!, one rate of taxation on all sums above the personal allowance, abolish NI and corporation tax (where does the money, generally, paid in taxation by companies come from? their customers – abolishing corp. tax would be of great benefit to business and consumers alike). Abolish the ‘Road fund license’ (place an extra penny or two on fuel… the more you use, the more you pay… and you can’t avoid it)… Abolish the TV license fee, replace property taxes with local income tax…

Review and overhaul the whole legal/judicial system… introduce a bill of rights, including the right to die, re-write our laws in plain english (how people can be expected to follow them all when they can’t understand some/most/all of them is beyond me)… work for prisoners (not necessarily demeaning…. but something purposeful)… evidence based policy for things like drugs, etc.

Focus on nuclear for base load, wind and pumped hydro for peak electicity, Re-nationalise water supply, simplify the planning system, introduce minimum property standards for landlords (and rent control).

On the subject of health, refocus NHS on ‘core’ services – e.g. all ‘elective’ work to be private only (and/or introduce a 2-tier service… ‘standard’ – basically meets your needs, bed on a ward, etc and ‘enhanced’ (for which you pay extra / take out insurance) whereby you get a private room, greater ‘home comforts’, an extra nurse… which helps subsidise the normal service.

Simplify IP and introduce fair use provisions…

And oh so many little things that I don’t think I could list them all…

Radical taxing and financial penalties of American corporations that outsource.
Subsidies for large corporations strictly creating only American jobs.
Drastically decrease foreign imports and tax the hell out what ever remains.
Prioritize the taxation commercial advertising.
Create incentive programs which make deficit a national responsibility.

And for the love of God, government funding of commercial free educational programming on television!

What insane man put me in charge of a country?!

I would sell the country to China for $1. I would then spend that dollar on a cheeseburger from mcdonalds. Once I have received the cheeseburger I will notice that it was not prepared correctly, missing many key ingredients. Seeing that the cheeseburger is defiled, I would toss it into the trashcan and go on my merry way.

-Remove the laws I’m not happy with, such as banning the sales of bubblegum, banning guns, marijuana and abortions. And the laws restricting the rights of prostitutes would be loosened a lot.

-Hold a talk with all my ministers to find out the major issues of the country. Address them in the way I feel is most efficient.

-Appoint a deputy to rule for me while I have a luxurious life.

-Once a year, have meetings with the heads of countries that are directly affecting the country(eg. we depend on the US to keep our economy stable, we depend on the Philipines and Malaysia for lots of labor, so these would be countries directly affecting us) and find out what problems they have in dealing with us and what we can do to fix it. Adjust legislation as needed; for the smaller stuff just give the general spirit of what I’m trying to do to my deputy and trust him to do stuff.

get money from stopping NASA-the only thing we need in space is satellites, and they waste billions sending huge rockets into space for absolutely no point.i would also allow people to choose where 90% of their taxes go,the government chooses what happens to the 10%

That sounds a great idea…if the people got to choose where taxes went then I am pretty sure councils would have to put up big screens in town showing the X-factor while the education system died

Plugging the holes in the tax system that allow tax avoidance would probably be a good start.
Overhaul the benefits system to provide welfare to those who need it rather than just anyone.
Remove treatment of voluntary problems from the NHS, if you choose to smoke, drink or eat yourself into hospital then you pick up the check.
Overhaul the penal system to make committing a crime carry an actual punishment and have prisoners contribute meaningfully to society

If I was in charge of the local country? Increase funding to the police, increase funding to the NHS. Start a comprehensive overhaul of the education system, and do away with the ‘teach to the test’ mentality. Do away with the ‘preparing the kids for the industrial revolution’ mentality. Look at ways to properly utilise technology in the classroom, and properly utilise fun to get high absorbtion rates from th kids. Concentration on individually tailored lesson plans. Split the teacher’s job into two positions: One person to maintain discipline in the class, the other to teach.

With the NHS, save money by tackling health tourism with a ruthless approach. Increase funding for front-line workers, look to save money on the beaurocratic backend.

Implement a secondary GMC for non-doctor professionals – paramedics, nurses, medical technicians. Currently if a doctor screws up, the GMC will bracket them and protect them from harm. That needs to be lessened. If they screw up too often, they go. A good way to do that is with a secondary medical council for the other workers.

Cut tax breaks for the rich out of the equation completely, and restore full DLA for those in need of it. Institute a program looking at getting them back into work and providing the necessary modifications. Up the working hours cap on incapacity to something more reasonable. 150 hours per week should do it.

Cut the amount of paperwork the police have to do. Mandate surveilance cameras on police helmets, to watch for violations from both sides. Cut staff from the beaurocratic backend. Modernise their equipment, and deal with the departmental infighting by stricter oversights.
