I think one would join the army because they feel that they need to give something back to their country, or if they feel that they need to do it.
Post your opinions.

I know a bunch of people who did it because they couldn’t afford to go to college or didn’t have a good enough record to get in, didn’t want to work at McDonalds, and because the army had really heavy recruitment practices here in the few years after 2001.

I guess that would be a logical reason to join. if you have nowhere else to go and you dont feel like earning minimum wage at McDonalds, then you could enlist. I know i’m gonna enlist as a marine because of my reason :).

to be honest with you if your looking for a long life the marine corp isnt what you want. if i were you id go USAF and if your hell bent on getting some “action” they have a spec ops also. yes the USAF has ground forces.

Currently?
Because they hold the misguided belief that the two wars we’re currently engaged in actually mean something.

I’m glad that telling the truth is a trait that’s considered rude in America.
If you want to risk your mind and body because you truely think George W. Bush was correct when he said we found Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, even though we haven’t, go ahead. Its your life. Don’t think I’ll support you, however. The rest of us on the sane side of the fence are just confused, not angry.

First of all, i am not risking my life because of the beliefs of one man. i am risking my life for the beliefs of an entire nation. Secondly, you do not have to support me. theres thousands of people that hate what america is doing right now with our army.

I know that in my family, the military has been a part of it. My uncle, my both of my grandfathers, so on and so forth. For me, I never liked the idea of the military, just seems too uptight, not my thing.

Try about 65% of this country, the entire middle east, most of Europe, most of South America, Asia, and I think Australia doesn’t like it either.
Also, Africa.
n. i am risking my life for the beliefs of an entire nation.
I’m glad the neo-cons can grab a terrible, jingoist political viewpoint and call it “The Entire Nation.”

I did it for the experience.
Two years in, I’m already planning on getting out. War has nothing to do with it. Money has nothing to do with it. Badassery has nothing to do with it. you either fit there or you don’t.

Why are you planning on leaving?

People don’t want the truth, they want everything to be sunny and cheerful. One day they will have to wake up to reality.

Okay can we just get back to stating reasons that one would choose to join the army?

I can honestly see no reason anyone would want to join the army.
All the above reasons are terrible as far as I’m concerned

they might join because they just really want to shoot people.
i suspect this is not as common as people that are suckered into it, though.

Glorification of the military and war in a way that it makes it so that people want to join the military for the glory, only to find out how painfully hard it is.

Glory?
What’s glorious about ending up lying in some desert somewhere with you’re brains on the floor? What’s glorious about dying in a pointless way that makes no difference to the world? Why die for a country that obviously doesn’t want you there in the first place?
EDIT@angel14995: Sorry if my post seems to be having a go at you, I was just expanding on the subject of “glory”

how else do you plan to make a difference? make a petition to iraq complaining about how the war is hurting us all? someone has to do something. take action. and since people are “suckered into it” why dont they stay? ill tell you why. because they cant handle it. they cant handle some work. some pressure. if they dont like it then they dont have to stay. but for those who dont back out, they are the brave. the strong. the ones who are dying for your right to argue about this on an internet forum. the ones who risk their lives for a cause that they know is right. the ones who dont do it for the money, or the fame, or the gloating rights: because they want to. those men and women have families back home not knowing if they are coming back. America appreciates what these men and women do. they dont just do it because they want the glory. they do it because they feel that they owe something back to this nation.
